Enough (Sapphire and Steel ficlet)
This story is part of my multi-fandom Halloween costume for
karaokegirl's Come as you aren't party, being held all this week. The index of stories can be found here
Title: Enough
Fandom: Sapphire and Steel
Characters or Pairing: Steel
Rating/warnings/spoilers: G/none/none
Word Count: ~230
Summary: They have to trust each other
Enough
Your love alone - is not enough not enough not enough
It's what you felt it's what you said what you said what you said
There have never been any apologies between them. Steel has always acted as he thought best, and Sapphire has done the same. So he doesn't apologise for his wrong decisions, even when he knows they were wrong. It makes no difference to their working relationship, because it can't. They have to trust each other, now and always, or they'd both be lost.
He doesn't wonder how his decisions will affect anything else between them. What they have is unique, as far as he knows, something that runs deeper than trust, that holds them together through everything. And if he is sometimes careless and she is sometimes distant, that doesn't matter. They will disagree and argue and fight and come back afterwards as strong as before.
But he knows that it hurts her. He knows that she connects to these foolish humans in a way that he can't hope to understand. It's something he accepts as part of her, the part that fills the gap, makes him complete. She's the one who loses, every time, trying to make him understand, to make them more than just anomalies caught in a crisis. He values her judgement and leans on her strength, but this is not something he can learn from her, not fully. And he wonders when the gap will become so wide that they will no longer be able to bridge it.
