My brain is a total mess at the moment, so I'm list-writing like crazy. I don't think this post is going to be the exception. More will no doubt end up going on here as I think of it, but for now, it's just my "Really need to do this stuff" list and a question.

Question first:

Why is there no SGA AU where they're gymnasts? I'm watching the Olympics at the moment, and seriously, some of these guys are flying. Why don't we have an AU where John's a gymnast and Rodney's the coach? We have sock AUs, penguin AUs and cookie AUs. We have them as vampires, musicians, shop owners, ice-skaters, marine biologists...and yet no gymnasts? Come on, fandom, you're letting me down here! I do have a couple of hundred words from an old X-men fic that I think is a pretty good gymnastics description. Maybe I'll have to dig them out and write it myself...

Ooh, and another question that I've just thought of. I've more or less given up on picking fic off the Doctor Who and Torchwood newsletters, but I feel the need to get back into reading. Does anyone have any author recs that I could follow - not just single fics, but whole bodies of work that I can get stuck into? I've got a couple of SGA things on the go, but I want to get back to Torchwood soon, and I need some inspiration. Anyone who's maybe only just got into the fandom, or you've only just discovered or you think I might not know for some reason? Anyone?

- Send start of [livejournal.com profile] artword story to artist.*
- DVD commentary
- Send off start of top sekkrit fic for reassurance.
- Find phone charger
- Send resignation letter

- Send acceptance letter
- Change address on loyalty cards
- Investigate CILIP fees
- Find a new phone contract
- Clear desk
- [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang admin
- Put audiofic on memory stick to take home

- New t&c for [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_meta
- New fest at [livejournal.com profile] bringthehappy
- Prod at Torchwood story a little to see what happens
- Finish recording audiofic [[livejournal.com profile] perspi, I'm about halfway through!]
- Empty final two packed boxes
- Sort stuff into smaller boxes for mum to take home
- Find somewhere for Sunday lunch

*I want to seriously recommend the [livejournal.com profile] artword process to you guys. The idea of building art into the story as part it is so very cool, and I'm having a blast.

That's a long list, but a lot of it is achieveable sitting right here, so that's what I'm going to do! I'm adding the [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang stories that I want to read to my del.icio.us account (I use this name) and do go read them, guys. These stories took people weeks to work on (well, other people. I wrote mine in 6 days, but that's because I'm an idiot) and were real labours of love. I hope to get through them and the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang ones over the next couple of weeks, and will return with recs! But I'd love to hear other people's picks as well.

How is everybody? Going to have a nice weekend? I'm here at work all day tomorrow, and it's deadly quiet at the moment, so spammage ahoy...

ETA (see, I told you):

Actually, it's a tie this morning.

#1. I get a call from a colleague asking me to check out a broken shelf on the first floor. When I got there, the reader explained that he had broken it. When I raised an eyebrow at him, he added,

"I stood on it to get a book and the support just sheared off."

Yeah. The shelves are for books. The ladders are for people. This is an important thing to get the right way round.

#2. The porter brought through a woman who wants to get hold of a copy of a journal. She'd gone to the Ashmolean museum, who sent her to us. Thanks, guys. I think we need to have a conversation about the difference between a library and a bookshop. But I managed to find an email address for her, so hopefully she'll get what she needs.

Honestly. We once had a phonecall from someone in Paris who wanted to buy a book, but that was understandable - "Libraire" means bookshop in French, it's one of those 'false friends' in translating, but I didn't remember that until 5 minutes into a rather confusing conversation...

Why don't we have an AU where John's a gymnast and Rodney's the coach?

Especially since it's been sort of vaguely implied that Rodney did gymnastics when he was really young.

*blinks* Okay, so I totally missed that. Where does that come from?

I love Soul to Squeeze (http://perspi.livejournal.com/99275.html), which sort of has an element of 'John-as-gymnast', but I'd love a full-on AU, with proper descriptions of the action. Most people (myself included) duck out of describing action in detail, but it's so much more satisfying when you get stuck into it.

It's at the very end of ... Broken Ties, I think. Ronon is sleeping and Rodney is babbling. I didn't record the episode so I can't transcribe it, but to me that's what it sounds like he's talking about.

Ah...I didn't hear most of the babble as someone was talking to me in the background at the time. I'll have to go back and have another look.

And there's a great thought - Rodney as the gymnast and John as the coach. Or the pair of them as competitors. Or something...

Oh, I'm having too much fun with this idea ;)

(ETA: I found a transcript, and I think he's talking about the piano rather than gymnastics, but it's still a fun thought! :D)

Ah, you're totally going to make me write a sequel, aren't you? A whole universe of ficlets, with the boys all flirting and John unable to concentrate and getting himself stuck, and Ronon being Ronon, and Teyla and Emma wanting to go to the movies but having no place to sit so Rodney finds a way to rig up a movie house on the inside of the main tent...

Can you be bribed? Because I really, really want to read the one where John gets stuck. Mostly because I'm giggling just thinking about it. And you're not going to say that you haven't thought of it because lookee! List!

Also, I love that Ronon's 'thing' is...being Ronon.

So, yeah, I'm totally going to make you write a sequel.

Squeee!

I sometimes stand on bottom shelves in the grocery store, and have been known to climb into the freezer to reach the calcium-fortified orange juice concentrate on the top shelf - these places are just not designed for short people! - but if there were a ladder provided, I would absolutely use it instead. And do, when I'm in libraries.

We have sock AUs, penguin AUs and cookie AUs. We have them as vampires, musicians, shop owners, ice-skaters, marine biologists...and yet no gymnasts? Come on, fandom, you're letting me down here!

That is really surprising, actually! Surely it won't be long... (COOKIE AU? That's weird and wonderful.)

I'm imagining this being said with a look of confusion, like, Why would it do that? while you fight the urge to smack him up side the head and send him to take a physics class or two.

good luck with your list. It's inspired me to keep going with the things I'm needing to do this morning.

I've only gotten through 10 or so of the tardisbigbangs (not counting mine obviously). I skipped some because I don't know the characters or the crossover (the chalet school and new adventures thing). A few were great, two randomly ended (the authors must have run out of time) a few were decent enough and one was dreadful in the train wreck sort of way.
