Today is not a good day

There are reasons for this, too long and boring to go into. But one of them involves falling off a ladder.

So, instead, for all the writers on my flist, allow me to advertise:

Karaokegal's Third Annual 'Come As You Aren't' Halloween Party

There have been some great stories to come out of this in the past couple of years, so I'm definitely encouraging everyone to take part. And please let people on your flists know, even if you or they don't know karaokegal. This is an open-to-everyone, come-join-in kind of thing. Open all hours, gate-crashers encouraged.

Just for the record, I have no idea what I'm going to write, since my CV includes most genres, multiple fandoms, some of the nuttiest crack ever attempted and some serious experimentation. My costumes are usually the equivalent of throwing a sheet over my head and telling people I'm a ghost, therefore any and all suggestions gratefully received (although just for the record, I won't attempt anything explicit because I want people to actually, you know, read the result, not want to poke their eyeballs out with a fork).

So, because it's not a good day, I have three things I want to do, and that's it:
#1. Stick to my eating plan.
#2. Clear the trolley of books behind me.
#3. Break my artword fic. It doesn't have to be finished, but I need to get it sorted out, because this...so and so...is fighting me every step of the way.

I'm going to be posting my fic-draft complaints to the SGA-filter over at heretoutopia (you know who you are...) so if you don't want to be bugged, this is a good time to defriend that journal. It's more of a scrapbook than a journal, so I promise, no offence.

Hope your days are going better than mine and remember: be careful out there. Especially around ladders...

I love the idea of Come as You Aren't but like you I'm always stumped about what to do, I've written pretty much everything at some time or another (smut, gen, het, slash, femslash, fluff, angst, RPF, crack, long, short,) even if a lot of it isn't on LJ, and in quite a few fandoms too. I've even written about pink which is something I despise (albeit indirectly, but it was still there). So ummm.

I don't want to write major squicks, as anything that counts as a *major* squick of mine wouldn't be able to be posted to an open community! Maybe I should go down the MST route - that way I'd be writing something I don't particularly like but with a get-out clause! Hmmm.

*nods* That's how I feel too. I'm not going to write something that squicks me because, well, this is supposed to be fun. And I don't want to write something I'm ashamed of! I'm thinking of going for 1st person narrative, maybe with someone like Ianto or Ronon, who I don't really write directly that much. Something will occur to me, I'm sure...

MSTs can be all kinds of awesome. I've never tried to write them myself, but there are some really hilarious ones out there. That's gotta be worth a try :D

That's more than what I usually do. I just randomly ransack my closet for clothes that remotely resembles some random contemporary character and that's about it. Um... this is referring to actual costume party that is. Heh.

Also, I think I've lost my writing mojo. Stupid RL. :(

Jack seemed to be more himself too, apart from the fact that he was still laughing and happened to be wearing a pink tutu, thigh high pvc ballet boots with 6 inch heels and a Hawaiian shirt.

And then...

Reality twisted around them again, and then covered them in candy-floss. Ianto could no longer see Jack through the mounds of pink spun sugar, but he certainly heard him, he couldn’t avoid hearing him. Jack did not believe in airing his displeasure in a quiet manner.

“I hate this stuff. Why can’t it rain donuts?”

Then you'll just have to ask them. If they don't list it, they've got to expect people to ring them and ask. That's what they have phones for. Although I feel your pain on that one - I hate making phone calls. But most people are very nice, and those that aren't are wrong not to be. You can do this!

b) omg my artword. Poor mortari :( The art is *incredible* and the story is eating me alive! I'm wracked with guilt, and I'm so not sarcastic :(

b) Ditto. So very, very much ditto. The pictures I've got are just so good and I'm all *flail* How do I live up to that? And why won't Teyla just tell me the damn story already? And lots of other questions...

c)Hee. I wrote a drabble a day for about 40 days, and decided I couldn't over-spam my poor-longsuffering flist over here so created that journal for them. There's quite a lot over there, but I'm not writing much Torchwood at the moment, so it's generally pretty quiet. Have fun!

Come as you aren't - how about a romance? I don't mean slash necessarily, just a good, old-fashioned, slow-burning romance. I don't think I've ever seen you do that - I've seen UST, hinted-more-than-just-friends, even a bit of almost-pr0n, but I don't think I've ever seen you write something that's solely about a relationship, with no other point to it.

(although I would make a strong case for the argument that the reason your gen is so good is that it is underpinned with solid relationships between the characters)

Ooh, that's such a good idea! If I can bring myself to do it. *eyes characters nervously* The other thing I've never done, I realised, is a full-blown AU, and I have one of those sitting at the back of my writing brain. We'll see what happens...

I would LOVE to see you write a pure action piece - a nice plotty genfic with some juicy fight scenes. Awesome.

Also, I would LOVE to see you get broadband back, so that you can have my ideas for me again ;) Any news?

Come to think of it, I think other than RPS (which squicks the heck out of me hence no popslash for me either cos that's just too similar), I've pretty much wrote most genres as well. Crack, romance, angst, xovers, fusions, AUs, fluff, drama, action/adventure, gen, slash... Oh, het. Don't think I've written het before.

Huh. Wonders if anyone ever wrote from a German speaking Dalek's POV...

I can *almost* say that a costume for me would be any story with no animals in it. Other than that I don't know what I could do that I haven't done that I could *do* if that makes sense. New fandom, I guess - at this point I'm not going to finish my SGA happyfest fic in time, and that's a new fandom for me. (It's got animals, though... lots.)

you could write cliche!fic- I don't think you've ever written ancient/alien machine turns Sheppard or Jack into a kid or into animals or gives them wings or whatever.. or write about Rodney in kindergarten fighting someone over a purple crayon or....

It's amazing what you can write when you try, though. A new fandom could work, or maybe something steamy or...*waves hands vaguely* Something you've always wanted to try but never had the courage. You know we'll all help you stitch the costume together, right?

*snort* I think I pretty much ONLY write cliche fic, except I usually put my own spin on it. The guys got turned into animals off screen in "Five Mission Reports..." and I've never really 'got' wingfic.

At the moment, I'm leaning towards an AU, which is something I've never attempted, canon-clinger than I am...

Artword fic, which is Teyla POV and therefore *hard*. But I think I'm getting there. Hopefully. My h/c fic shouldn't be too hard - I like the prompt and will just give myself a couple of days to write it, as usual ;)
