Sep. 11th, 2008 08:31 pmGuess where I'm typing this from?!? That's right, my new laptop is here! For those of you who are wondering what on earth I'm talking about, my latest toy is an Acer Aspire One and it rocks! Of course, when it comes to things like anti-virus or adding programmes, you guys are going to have to hold my hand, but for now, I'm just playing! And finding what doesn't work, like the @ and " signs being mixed around and something truly weird going on with ctrl+v...
But for now, I'm just seriously over-excited to actually have it! I can type absolutely fine on the keyboard, the webcam is fun and apart from the text size in the posting box for LJ, everything is incredibly clear on the screen. It runs YouTube just fine and I'm sure I'll get the hang of the mouse scroll eventually.
So. Excited!!!! *bounces like a bouncy thing*
Stand down, everybody. I installed the updates and it now won't turn on.

It's working again. For now... I sense this could be the beginning of a difficult friendship.

Date: 2008-09-11 09:31 pm (UTC)I'm still debating if I even 'want' a laptop. All the one's I've seen are totally temperamental and slooowwww!
Re: MS Updates *see icon*
It's those darned root certificates that come with the updates that muck up the works. Do you know anything about defragging?
And if they put the Norton Anti-virus program on there you've already got problems. Get someone to uninstall it before you do any customizing if in fact it's on your machine! Trust me on this one, girl.
Meanwhile, have fun playing! hee

Date: 2008-09-11 09:50 pm (UTC)Gwen looked at the computer like it was liable to catch fire any minute. "Should we wait for Jack?"
"No, it's fairly straight forward. Just click the icon."
"Why me? I know nothing about the computers, your the nearest thing to an expert in this room."
Ianto groaned. "Tosh built most of this system herself from alien tech, and she wrote 90% of the software. It's not windows."
"So we wait for Jack?" asked Gwen.
Ianto rolled his eyes. "And then have him make jokes at our expense for the next week."
Ianto and Gwen looked at each other and then the computer.
"It's just a routine update," said Gwen.
"Right," said Ianto almost to himself squaring his shoulders. "Here we go then."
He clicked the icon.
The Hub went dark, then the emergengcy lighting came on.
"oh crap!" said Gwen softly.

Date: 2008-09-11 10:32 pm (UTC)Did you manage to get it with XP installed, or did they foist Vista onto you? Either way, go at once to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ and download Firefox 3.0.1 This is not because I am a Firefox nut, this is because you will save yourself many hours spent removing unwanted scumware from your pc if you use Firefox. Also IE 7.0 sucks, but that's a secondary consideration.
As for your interchanged keys, you can alter the settings on the keypads of most pcs and laptops. Unless the machine comes with a custom utility, go thru Control Panel to clock/language/regional>regional>keyboard. Switching the keyboard to UK usually does the trick, if not, there's an option to fiddle with individual keys.

Date: 2008-09-12 06:03 am (UTC)Neither! I'm running Linpuslite, which is Acer's version of Linux. They don't call it Linux for dummies, but it's certainly easy to use! It turned out that one of the updates that I thought had broken the damn thing was a 'keyboard settings' menu, and I could suddenly just open a menu and change it instead of wrestling with the code.
AVG do a version for Linux. Which will be great once I figure out installing new programmes...
