I'm a bit all over the place today, so I just thought I'd share some of the places I've been:

Revisiting old memes. This is always fun. Apparently I am still turquoise, although a stronger shade than I was. I'm ENTP, the first career choice of which is dictator. Mwahahaha. I still keep my WIPs in my head rather than on the page. Also, either my tagging has got worse, or my meme addiction has abated recently.

Researching for NaNo. I keep learning all kinds of random things about salt. This is going to sound really dim, but I didn't realise that you could literally mine salt. Just cut it out of the ground. Also, did you know that Timbuktu is an important salt centre? Or that Salzburg and Halle are both named for the salt that was so important to their prosperity? I'm still trying to work out exactly what I want to *do* with all this salt, but it's fun having a look.

Prodding at stories. I have a point but no plot for one, and a plot but no point for another. I also have some silly plot bunnies and an [livejournal.com profile] artword deadline. Add to this the Last Fic Writer Standing challenge that opens tomorrow and [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa whose sign-ups close tomorrow, and it's nicely busy. Despite this seemingly long list, I'm actually pretty content about all of them right now. My brain is in a writing place, I think, and I'm just along for the ride. Coming back to my first point, I had a writing meme around here somewhere, I'm sure...must go dig that out...

Work is good, life is interesting. Not much more I can ask for, really.

How's everyone else?

Salt's interesting. 'Salary' comes from the word salt.

Ooh, memes *clicky*

Thinking of references to salt....

The salt monster from that very early episode of Star Trek TOS.

Salt always makes me think of Lot's wife. I did know that you could mine salt - or I assumed so because of the expression "in the salt mines" to refer to hard labor. I didn't know about Timbuktu though!

I think you're entirely too sweet-natured to make an effective dictator. :)

It's always fascinated me that salt kills most plants but some, like asparagus, actually need it to thrive.

*nods* It's amazing the amount of salt there is in our culture when you stop and look. All I have to do now is get a story out of it...

*grin* Got 'em. Well, except for the Star Trek one...*goes to look at*

There's a huge amount of salt ingrained in our culture - you only realise when you start looking!

Ah, I'd forgotten the salt mines reference, or at least, never really thought about it. I'm finding out all kinds of weird and wonderful things!

*giggle* Maybe it's all part of my cunning plan to lull people into a false sense of security before I take over the world...

Ooh, I hadn't come across that one. Lots of references to sowing fields with salt to make them infertile, but I didn't know about asparagus. Thanks :)

I remember once doling out meals in a hospital I used to work in. We used to give out the dietary restrictions first, so they didn't get mixed up with the regular meals. Anyhoo, I went to pick up the tray for one of the patients, and the catering bod stopped me and said 'oh, that's Mr X, give him this, will you?' and handed me several packets of salt. Sadly, Mr X was on a sodium restricted diet, and when I pointed this out, the catering guy just looked at me like 'yeah, and?' *facepalm*

I should point out that hospital catering staff are usually very good at this stuff, and this bloke was clearly just having a blonde day :)

Speaking of which, sodium (along with potassium) is one of the electrolites in the body that needs to be kept very finely in balance. A minute shift in either direction can cause massive problems. People who live in hot countries for any period of time have to increase their salt intake because they're sweating most of their sodium content out, which sucks for people like me who can't stand salt. Reason nine hundred and forty-three not to move to a hot country...

*raises hand* I knew about the salt mines at Saltzburg and Halle, from the Chalet School books. I think in one of those that was out of print when I was younger but which I read a couple of years ago, the girls actually go and visit the salt mine at Halle! :-)

Huh. I hadn't thought of that... I'm still in my magpie stage of information gathering (ie anything shiny gets filed away) so will add that to the collection.

thanks :)
