August, September and October writing stats
9 Stories (All but one written for challenges)
3 fandoms (SGA, Doctor Who, Torchwood)
64,770 words, approximately (46,000 of which are one story)
SGA
True Colors (The Mother's Love Remix) (~1,400 words)
Written for
gateverse_remix, remixing
dossier's story Habits of a Lifetime. Rodney's mother's name came about because I didn't want to name her at all, but knew I had to. At first, I was just calling her 'she', so it seemed natural to just finish the word off as a name.
Summary: When Meredith is four, she buys him a Big Chief tablet
Favourite Bit:
She wants to pull them all out and read them, try to find the boy he was, to learn the man he's becoming. He won't become his father, with his career and his car and his secretary; he won't become her, with her house and her tears and her half-empty bed.
Genus: Wraith (the Who Are You remix) (~3,280 words)
Written for
gateverse_remix as a pinch-hit, remixing
cupidsbow's Class: Insecta. I sent an "if no one else wants it" note to the mod over breakfast, only to send a "please let me write this" one by the time I got to work. It was also what kicked off my little Teyla-writing stint, which I definitely don't regret.
Summary: John is better, and it is good to have him back. She is relieved and happy. Of course she is.
Favourite Bit:
The stab of desire is so strong that she can't hide it, and she knows he will see it in her eyes. It is the same heat that almost overwhelmed her on the Hive ship, but stronger this time, fiercer and unrestrained. When Ronon puts a hand on her waist to steady her, it almost unbalances her, so powerful is the flood of feeling, every nerve singing with wantneedtake. He moves closer, and she presses her face to his arm, his skin cool against her flushed forehead.
In Memoriam (~2,300 words)
Written for
sgahcchallenge's Fall Fic Exchange. I'm still not as happy as I could be with my Ronon-voice, but I do like Rodney in this.
Summary: Now he has new pain to pile on the old, a layer of scars so thick that he finds it hard to remember what lies beneath them.
Favourite Bit:
"It's not all for you," Rodney says defensively, setting it down on a table that he wheels closer to the bed. "But I wasn't sure if you wanted something hot or just a sandwich, and they had two types of pudding so I thought, you know, you could choose what you liked and I'd have the chocolate one."
Not Dead Yet (~3,750 words)
Written for
archae_ology as part of the Fandom Free For All. Lorne and Teyla was requested, so I got to write Teyla again, this time for a more extended story. She's such a joy to write, and with so much (unexplored in canon!) potential that I can't see me getting bored of her any time soon.
Summary: The box was large and striped, its lid flipped back and a small, handwritten note in front of it. Teyla paused as she passed.
Congratulations on not being dead.
O'Neill
Favourite Bit:
Still, she took another bite of her stew as she tried to think of the best place to start. "Well," she said eventually, "there is an animal on several nearby worlds called a drall. I believe it is similar to your cow."
He looked up, forkful of stew halfway to his mouth. "You know, I don't personally own a cow, but go on."
Port Call (~3,600 words)
Written for
chensuu as a pinch-hit for the
sgahcchallenges Fall Fic Exchange. Although really, it was written for me when I was having too much fun. Sorry about that… There will be sequels. Oh yes.
Summary: Port Call. Being the True and Factual Account of the Adventures of Rodney McKay, Genius, and his Encounters with those Fearsome Criminals of the Pirate Ship Wraith. John Sheppard was also there.
Favourite Line: "Oh please. There's more cloth here than in Atlantis' mainsail." Rodney laid two strips on the bed, and tried to work out where to tear next. "And let's not even start on your hair."
Resonance (~46,000 words)
Written for
sgabigbang. This was a labour of love, sweat and tears, written in 6 days, edited in 10. I bounced out of my chair when
in_the_bottle chose it to work on, and the art is simply stunning. The story…I would like to take sandpaper to, to get rid of what I can see are rough edges, but overall, I think it says what I wanted it to say. About Elizabeth, about John and about the whole damn set-up in Atlantis. For me, it provides an emotional continuity that I didn't get on screen, and that was the point of the exercise.
Summary: As everyone tries to put Atlantis back together again, John has an accident that gives him more of an insight into the city and the Ancients than he ever could have wanted. Unfortunately, this also gives the city and the Ancients an insight into him.
Favourite Bit:
Some part of John that was probably becoming more than a little hysterical noted that he'd finally found something that actually rendered Rodney speechless. Who would have thought it?
"You're awake," he said, getting the glare he deserved for stating the obvious. "You, er, feeling okay?"
"I was until the apocalypse happened behind my back."
Whoniverse
Magpie (~890 words)
Written for
aeronlanart as part of the Fandom Free For All. It's my only Donna-fic, it's very silly and I love it.
Summary: Donna's had enough.
Favourite Bit:
Losing her hairbrush had been a bit more of a problem, but she just about managed with a comb until the brush turned up, four days later. Of course, she couldn't get at it because it had somehow become incorporated into the main console and the Doctor swore that the transdimensional stabilisers wouldn't work without it now. He bought her a new one on the next planet where the inhabitants had hair.
A Life of Joy and Peace (~1,850 words)
Written for
rustydog from a
bringthehappy prompt. Suffice it to say that while I succeeded at fic, I failed at happy. It's hopeful but I wouldn't call it happy.
Summary: In the ruins of the world, Martha walks. But sometimes, she has to stop.
Favourite Line:
It was a lone voice, a woman, singing softly at first, then lifting in volume as she was joined by another singer, then another.
Movie Night (~1,700 words)
Written for
noveltea as part of the Fandom Free For All. This is my first bona fide Torchwood fic in months and months. I'm not as happy as I could be with Tosh's voice, but I liked how the story came out, so that's not so bad.
Summary: Somehow, Tosh suspects that when Jack instructed her and Ianto to check Torchwood's archives ("Just in case anything else decides to start wandering out and killing people") he hadn't had their impromptu movie night in mind.
Favourite Line: They're not getting the details that Jack chooses to tell them, this time. There's nothing hidden in the expressions on the screen, nothing careful or guarded or overblown to make the story better.
And it's not technically fic, and it's not technically by me, but I can't link to it enough, so:
Become or: Martha Jones, how are you so awesome?
Vid by
in_the_bottle, who is patient, talented and wonderful, and took my vague flapping and turned it somehow into a vid. How she read my mind from the other side of the world, I will never know. I'm just grateful she did.
