For anyone who was wondering what I was talking about yesterday when I encouraged knitters to listen to the Royal Society talk (link as soon as it appears, btw) the quickest way to find out is to Google for "hyperbolic knitting". Although "hyperbolic crochet" will also get lots of hits. I'm not entirely clear (not having read all the articles in detail) which craft is considered the best for truly representing the maths…
Anyone who's read Time in a Bottle by
astolat or Proof by
maverick4oz and
pollitt has got a head start on this, but contrary to what John and Rodney think in those stories, apparently knitting is the best way to represent hyperbolic space.
No, I haven't finally lost my marbles. See links below. If someone would care to write me SGA knitting-fic, I'd be over the moon… [
mad_jaks, I haven't forgotten your puppy-fic, but I'm on a course this afternoon, so it will have to go up a bit later on, sorry :S]

Date: 2008-11-11 02:57 pm (UTC)Pregnant women used to be warned against crocheting or knitting--the act of tying knots in string might work in some sympathetic magic fashion to give a difficult delivery, as if someone had tied knots in the birth canal.
But then on the other hand, I think--I can't remember for sure, but I want to say that brides were encouraged to do domestic stuff like that, as it symbolized the bride and groom being bound together.
Putting science and math stuff in with it makes my brain want to be thinky, but I can't come up with anything coherent just yet. I suppose there's a reason that it's called "string theory", right?
And speaking of science and yarn, you saw this (http://whywouldyouknitthat.blogspot.com/2008/09/this-is-what-happens-when-biologist.html), right?

And yeah, I saw that handicraft project. Just... Why? Why would you do that?

Date: 2008-11-11 04:24 pm (UTC)But that fic. That fic I want to read, and I want to read now! *feeds plot bunnies* Because Rodney crochets a hat for John, just a beanie but in a black yarn that's got silver in it, and when John pulls it on, it's just that little bit too small so that his ears stick out as does a tuft of hair at the front, which makes Teyla smile in that way she does when she's trying not to laugh, and Rodney's all embarrassed but John kind of likes it and wears it on their next mission to Planet Icicle.
Teyla's hat is brown, and Rodney makes a really tiny one for Torren too.

Date: 2008-11-11 07:17 pm (UTC)Because Rodney will not be satisfied with John's yarmulke/beanie, but he will rather that John's pointy ears stay WARM, thank you, so he will next knit a bomber hat (because all pilots need a bomber hat, yeah?) and Ronon will request a Dr. Who scarf and Rodney will make it in no time flat because once he gets the hang of it he's fast. :) Because Ronon doesn't do hats, with his hair, but he likes scarves that he can tie around his ears and let the tails hang down his back.

Date: 2008-11-11 07:39 pm (UTC)Because Teyla gets slightly alarmed when Rodney knits Torren a romper suit. Not that it's not cute and all, and it fits really well with just enough room for him to wear for a few months until he grows out of it (because Rodney's Rodney and measured). It's just that if she accepts this now she's worried he's not going to stop, and while the knitting is good, the color is kind of weird. She loves Rodney, but she loves her son more and doesn't want to have to send him to play with other children wearing a pastel orange sweater.

I am rubbish at knitting animals (it's the stuffing I just don't have the knack) so I hope Gwen is better at it than me... *G*
I am hungry... and my husband left the loft ladder down on our landing and I stubbed my toe a few minutes ago:(
