And lots of other questions...

[[livejournal.com profile] bau_inbox mods? *waves* Hi. Er. Please don't link to this. I'm just rambling...]

Good morning, lovelies. Possibly? I've spent two days pretty much doing nothing, watching Criminal Minds and trying to stay conscious. I'm still trying to get my head round the idea that I have to do stuff today. Seriously? Sheesh. That's overrated. How's everyone else? Good weekend planned?

Also, Criminal Minds fandom? Seriously, folks. Where's the Gen fic? There's fewer long Gen fics here than there is in SGA. There's fewer than Torchwood. What's with that? Where are the epics of any kind? Where are the plotty casefics? Where's the crack, the comedy, the character studies? Bring out your Gen! Bring out your Gen!

*puts hands on hips* Criminal Minds fandom, get your act together. Don't make me come in there and do it for you.

Ahem. *climbs off soapbox* I feel much better now, so am off to hoover the sheep and dust some cakes. Have a good day, all.

Yes, I've been facing the problem of finding good character-focused Criminal Minds fics, and that's what I'm jonesing for right now. If I see anything good, I'll let you know. Any character preferences?

[identity profile] szm.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
Erm... threatening to write fic is probably not going to work. It's a bit like saying - if you don't do what I want I will give you this big yummy bar of chocolate.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
I like good Gen. That's actually the limit of my preferences - all characters welcome, and I'm to date on canon. For me, there are no obvious pairings (even Morgan/Garcia, since in canon, they know where they are with each other, and it's not together) so I struggle with pairing fic.

I've got a short rec list here (http://jadesfire2808.livejournal.com/20548.html) from 2 years ago. Hopefully I can start adding to it again soon, but all help greatly appreciated.

*g* Flattery will get you everywhere. And hey, who said I was going to write it? I have a big 'encourage to write' stick and I'm not afraid to use it ;D

*waves* Morning!

I understand completely about not wanting to have to do anything today. Neither do I.

Unfortunately, I have three assignments due in on Tuesday. *headdesk*

I have this issue with NCIS fic - why are people not writing what I want to read, damnit? It's not unreasonable for me to want well-written, interestingly plotted Gibbs/DiNozzo is it? Or entertaining team!fic or friendship!fic or cracky case!fic...

...what do you mean, 'entitlement complex'? ;)

[identity profile] miss-zedem.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true. She hits me with it occasionally *ducks*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*nudging into Jades' journal here* I could probably point you to NCIS fic. Gibbs/DiNozzo is the only slash couple I really read in any fandom and I just love gen, especially team fic. Just give a holler if you want some recs

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Is CM a smaller or less active fandom than TW? Or is there just less gen?

[identity profile] blackmare-9.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that show but have not delved into its fandom. Another fandom is the last thing I need; I'm neck-deep in House as it is.

And then there's my RL "fandom" -- Horse (see my icon for the Horse in question). I will be spending my time this morning watching some vids before I go to the barn. :-)

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
A little of both, I think. People like taking the show apart, but I think they find it a little intimidating to write. It's hard to attempt case-fic without serious, serious research, and the risk of getting it wrong is high. Under those circumstances, I think people default to slash. If people are in a relationship, it's easier to get them to talk about their feelings (in fic, at least) or you go straight for the porn.

I might be selling them short, of course, but it's such a well-written show that attempting to really mimic it (the way you can with Atlantis) is very, very hard.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes a lot of sense. The casefics would be complicated. It's harder to just write a snippet or little silly thing and the long things require a lot of forethought and research. House seems a little similar.

[identity profile] miss-zedem.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
*hollers* That would be beyond fabulous if you could. Because there is SO much stuff out there, but a lot of it seems to be bad!fic, or worse, mediocre!fic :( I've found a handful of stuff I've enjoyed, but most of it just has me clicking the back button...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
For the slash- KSL (http://www.geocities.com/kslmag7/ncis) wonderful- plotty, long, developing stories and series. She manages to gives Gibbs a bit of vulnerability too. You can't go wrong with anything she writes, but especially Risk and Reward (and the risky series) and Opening the Box (and the box step series). And if you ever think the team doesn't appreciate Tony enough, read Purgatory.

the premiere pre-series how Tony came to NCIS (team fic in a way that it's Gibbs and Abby too) is Sequitur's Rictus (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2404010/1/)

kikkimax (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/617175/kikkimax)has some great gen ones too (oh, and Jades- apparently writes CM also!) plotty with real cases and clues with Tony as the focus. Angels and Heroes is probably the best known.

For G/D case fic also lady_ra' (http://www.visionsofprettyboys.com/NCIS/NCISStories.htm)s Tears (my favorite of hers is Christmas Miracle though)

umm, got tons more. Let me know specifically what you're looking for before I spam Jade's LJ to death

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, spam away, hon. It's all in interests of good fic, which is something I'm in favour of ;D

*giggles at icon*

[identity profile] miss-zedem.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, thank you kindly! *bookmarks links*

It's difficult to explain exactly what I look for in fic. I like slash, but hate unrealistic relationships (you know the ones with two guys making out in the middle of the street and no-one bats an eyelid, that kind of thing). I love gen, but not the kind which goes out of its way to avoid mention of relationships (what's wrong with a bit of UST and fading to black?). I really don't like anything that involves any kind of coercion or control in the relationship, but I have some BDSM fics on my del.icio.us page (although not many). I like plot, but will also read PWPs if they say something about the character... Yeah, I know, I'm awkward. Sorry *flutters eyelashes*

Um, if it helps my del.icio.us account is here (http://delicious.com/miss_zedem) - I haven't got many NCIS fics bookmarked, but I have some SGA on there and you might be able to discern a pattern for 'if you liked that, you might like this' purposes...

Oh, yes, I absolutely know what you mean. And I completely understand about the alluded to pre-slash/fade to black sort of style.

Is Tony your favorite?

I'll potted about and look at your bookmarks and then come back and suggest more.

[identity profile] miss-zedem.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I do love Tony, and get quite upset when he's mistreated/underestimated in canon. I think the actor does a great job of showing the layers - the surface act of being sexist and a bit of an airhead coupled with the intelligence he tries to hide and some quite obvious pain - which fic-writers seem to often miss. I'm also a big fan of Abby, and Tony and Abby's friendship. So anything featuring her would be a bonus.

Oh dear, I'm being incredibly demanding, aren't I? You shouldn't have asked... Can I offer due South recs at all? As that's probably all I'm placed to rec at the moment... Or I could write you an SGA story as a thank you - I've already got a list of fics I'm writing for people over the next few months (it's a More Joy Day thing, and the promise is that I'll write a proper fic sometime before next More Joy Day, ie next January), so adding one more isn't a big deal ;)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no worries! I'm happy to spread the NCIS love around.

I know exactly what you mean about Tony! Masks and layers. No one sees the real him. My internet's being spotty today, but I'll be back with more recs when I can!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Cm is a pretty bleak show, but it is interesting to watch, but i can't see anything fannish in it. So, haven't looked for any fanfic. Ack, and gen fic is just tough to find in general (no pun intended).

Hoover the sheep?????

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ouch. I managed to get the housework done this morning and cooking this afternoon, so am feeling all virtuous and productive :D

How're the assignments going?

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
CM can be bleak, and the subject matter certainly is, but there's something about the way they show it - no black and white, but interesting shades of grey - that I really like and that gives me hope. There are no easy questions and answers, which is the other thing I like about it.

*g* I has a sheep! (http://jadesfire2808.livejournal.com/326516.html#cutid1). How else am I going to keep him clean ;D

[identity profile] crystalshard.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The assignments aren't going anywhere, because I'm being exceptionally lazy. I'm just going to have to work my socks off tomorrow.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
aw, the sheep is cute. a dust mite condo! ;)
