I think I'm starting to understand why there isn't more Criminal Minds case-fic out there. It's not really a case of being intimidated by the show's quality, although I think that's a factor. It's because you have to wade through pages of depressing statistics to give Reid one line of dialogue.

Actually, scratch out depressing. Replace it with disturbing. At the moment, I'm researching an episode tag to 3x05 "Seven Seconds" and the child abduction statistics are scary enough. You know what's worse? The acronym for one study is NISMART. National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway and Thrownaway children.

Thrownaway. There's even a definition of it on the webpage. One thing I like about Criminal Minds is that it never plays down the horror of this, that we need a definition for it.

*shivers* Still, I'm writing the story anyway. Because there's one hell of a loose end there, and I really, really want to tie it up. Or at least draw attention to it, because I can't have been the only one to spot it.

Criminal Minds is one of the few shows that really looks honestly at the world. Not like a certain crime drama set in Las Vegas. *cough* I'll be very interested to see your episode tag. :)

Part of the reason I came back to CM was reading a post by [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic about the portrayal of humanity in the show. It shows you the depths of horror but also the depths of compassion and humanity. I probably have my own meta to write about this, about how the team are allowed to be human in a way that's rare on other shows (Torchwood is actually another that I would put in that category and I do have a sort of crossover bubbling away in my brain)

The episode tag is currently writing itself, but I'm quietly hopeful. Well. I'm hopeful that it'll be a good story. I don't yet know whether I can be hopeful about the ending.
