Day #4

It appears I'm writing a Criminal Minds/Numb3rs EPIC crossover. What is it with crossovers that makes them be so long, anyway? I've got some vague ideas bumping around in my head, but the story keeps trying to be in Charlie's POV, which would be fine if I actually knew the character. I'm not really more than a casual viewer of Numb3rs, and I've watched episodes from random seasons in a random order. Added to the fact that Five are always reapeating the same episode when I tune in (how do they know?), this could prove tricky.

So can anyone recommend "must see this" episodes for Charlie characterisation? I can hear his voice, I just don't know what to have him say, if that makes any kind of sense.

Anyway, enough of my blithering.

*glares* Why haven't more of you been over to the gen battle and written comment-fic? Or the fluff battle? Come on, folks. 4300 characters really isn't that many!

Today, I am awesome because I stayed awake through a whole course about serials AND I finally got a battery fitted to my watch, which has been dead for about 2 years. I've also managed to cross off a heathy chunk of stuff from my list, although I'm procrastinating terribly about the rest.

There's always tomorrow - I don't want to use up all my awesome all at once ;)

What about you guys? I've been very low-key-awesome today. Anyone done anything more exciting?

Congratulations on your awesomeness.

Today, I am awesome because I ran home from work and instead of slowing down as I went up the hills, I kept my speed up and tried to power up them.

I don't know much about Numb3rs - only seen one or two eps so I can't help with that. Sorry.

*tilts head* I have 80GB. Is that not much? I also have VLC thanks to my Linux-fu. I think that can probably even play telepathic files ;)

That's great, thanks. I'll probably go with them, the first few of S5 and the latest 1 or 2. That should give me enough!

I know what you mean about being scared to leave a fic. If I wander off halfway through, it normally takes me a year or so to come back. Apparently my brain only has the settings 'all' or 'nothing'.

That's pretty awesome! I've considered installing Windows, but figured it'd be too much fuss. Now I have VLC, I'm a very happy clam :D

Staying awake through a course definitely qualifies as awesome *nods* You also sent me instructions which I intend to read properly and not go 'argh, it's too complicated!', which was my initial reaction /o\ (a reflection of me, not of your instructions, I hasten to add).

Today I am awesome because I met with a rep during my lunch hour, then insisted on being allowed to leave early, then actually left early AND DIDN'T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT \o/

I am awesome because I made myself call a total stranger to whom I was referred last week. I met a friend of hers, who saw some of the horse-related art I make and said, "You really need to call this lady."

He did let her know to expect a call from me, so it wasn't as awkward as it might have been, but this sort of thing literally makes my heart pound and my chest tighten, I am SO not wired for it, so the fact that I did it anyway (and that it went well) makes me awesome today. I may end up getting some horse-portrait work out of it, which would be wonderful.

I'm also awesome because I agreed to go back to another 7:00 a.m. meeting of the same group of people from which I got this referral. That's tomorrow morning. Guys, I am SO nocturnal. I Do Not Do Mornings, but I'm doing it because I need to survive, and I'm proud of myself for that.

And I'm getting my big commission canvas underway today, so that's another awesome thing.

What do you mean by "a whole course about serials"? Serial ... what? I'm presuming it's rather dull if your awesome achievement was to remain conscious throughout. :-)

Also, Jades, you are awesome for continuing these posts. They're really helpful, more than you might think.

Hrm... *does math* Yes, it should be enough. And VLC is definitely greatness.

And, I might have an... *dramatic pause* idea. If you're feeling brave.

I know what you mean about being scared to leave a fic. If I wander off halfway through, it normally takes me a year or so to come back. Apparently my brain only has the settings 'all' or 'nothing'.

It's not as much fuss because I have backup machine(s), so I won't be computerless if I break something. (Just sad.) Of course, I haven't gotten to the actual installation process... so we'll see if I feel the same in the morning ;)

I have not felt at all awesome lately and expect not to feel awesome until March, when I turn in a big big assignment. But, um. Hm. I recognized a poem in a class today from nine years ago, and guessed the answer to a question about an article I hadn't even read?

Anyway - go you! I saw someone this weekend who works on Numb3rs and thought of your crossover. Did you know the show was originally going to be set at MIT?

Today's awesome is small, but it's been a long and trying day-- I've started making plans for gifts for people (which has the added advantage of getting me to smile).

I've watched a bunch of Numb3rs, but I cannot for the life of me think of good Charlie-centric episodes *frowns at self*

I'd be happy to beta it, since I can *recognise* good Charlie voice. And I'll see if I can think of a good set of episodes for you to watch.

Ummm, do you have an idea of *when* you want it to be set? Because he-- especially his concerns and social skills-- evolves as the show goes on. Or would you want it to be sort of generic in regards to time?

deleted and reposted due to grammar fail Turns out the grammar wasn't fail, but by the time I'd realised that I'd already deleted it. So extra fail! Edited for coherency (hopefully) and now I'm going to stop flailing at the internet, even if it is amusing.

I am awsome today because I have started writing my Tardis Big Bang fic. Also, I got together with my dad for his b'day and managed to not get upset with him when he pushed back the time (which he does rather frequently when we make plans). Plus I managed to reconnect with a friend or two.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, that's great, thanks. My plan at the moment is to watch the first ever episodes, then the first few of S5 (some of which I've seen) and the very latest ones. I'm still trying to figure out where to have the timelines meet, but it definitely matters, and I'll probably watch the appropriate episode to be sure.

I'll email you when it's done, thank you!

Making gifts for people is definitely awesome :) No such thing as a small one!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Eating breakfast is definitely a good thing to remember - it makes such a difference to the day!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome indeed! I hate forms...

I think it's partly that, but I tend to assume that people *do* know them - for me, I think it's more that I go "ooh, plot" because otherwise I can't envisage why the characters would meet. Apparently when it comes to these things, I suddenly start worrying about realism ;)

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
I've actually got 120GB (I had to look it up *facepalm*) and...I think I'm feeling brave... And curious ;)

My Acer occasionally freezes on start-up, but it always unfreezes again, and LinpusLite is a nice little operating system, so I think I'm going to stick with it for now. It's based on Fedora, so most things are compatible with it and I've got most of what I need now. Hope the conversion has been successful!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
That's definitely awesome. I walk to work, but running? I don't think my knees would take it, let alone the rest of me ;) Go you!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
And you also managed the instructions - double awesome!

NO GUILT is good :D Yay!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's a whole lot of awesome! Like you, I hate calling up people I don't know, so I know what you mean about the heart-pounding. WOOT! Sounds like a good, productive day!

Hee! Serials are any publication that come in serial format - journals, magazines, loose-leaf publications. Anything where you pay for them every year or on subscription rather than as they come. It's its own specilised field within librarianship, as there are all kinds of quirky things that can happen with it. Staying awake through the whole course was definitely a major victory!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*grin* I think that qualifies as awesome. For me, it's not about *feeling* awesome (which I really, really don't, most of the time) but about looking back on the day and going "hey, will you look at that?" I've also found myself trying to think of things to do so that I can qualify as awesome for the day, which seems to be helping my state of mind somewhat!

Oh cool! I didn't know that. I assume they figured a fictional college would be easier? For crossover purposes, I'm assuming that it's Caltech (for obvious reasons) and am having great fun doing the research :)

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That's hard, when you get messed around like that, so that's definitely awesome. And yay for writing! Brilliant!

Sounds like a really good day :D

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The conversion was successful! \o/ And it works like... well, it works, and properly. I didn't realize how badly SUSE was performing until I managed to load XP last night. Although I do feel like I lost some geek points because I went to Windows after all.

From what I've read, LinpusLite sounds like a fairly stable distribution, and is perfect for the functions of what netbooks should do -- surf and scribble ;)

Check your e-mail ;)

[identity profile] bironic.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think it's Caltech in everything but name -- the guy on the panel said most of the math department there consults on it, and I think they shoot scenes there sometimes. :)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I managed one thing for the gen battle. There are just too many prompts. I start to read the list and then my eyes cross and brain shuts down. However I REALLY want someone to write Doctor/Sesame Street with Grover as a companion. Fuzzy blue monster in special blue box. Come on people!!

Oh, hey. Should I send the SGA thing to someone else? I don't want to feel pressure if you've got all sorts of other stuff to do.

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What is it with crossovers that makes them be so long, anyway? It's the number of universes shouting at you. *g*

Crossing things off your list is well awesome, never mind the other stuff.

Today I am awesome because I finally posted the WIP that grew from a comment fic to almost 17k words. Does that count as Epic? It's one of them there long crossover beasties anyway, even if it does only cover a period of hours.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! You should DEFINITELY be writing that.

Eep, no, sorry! I'm on evening duty tonight so will have plenty of time to go through and get it back to you. Expect it some time in the next 2 hours :)

Sorry :(

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think 17k definitely counts as Epic AND Awesome :D Crossovers are always about 3 times the length you originally intend - the characters seem to get chatty!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no. No tricking me into writing things again. I can stand firm this time. Really. I can.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that you still think you have a choice about these things.

*pets you*
