Day #4

It appears I'm writing a Criminal Minds/Numb3rs EPIC crossover. What is it with crossovers that makes them be so long, anyway? I've got some vague ideas bumping around in my head, but the story keeps trying to be in Charlie's POV, which would be fine if I actually knew the character. I'm not really more than a casual viewer of Numb3rs, and I've watched episodes from random seasons in a random order. Added to the fact that Five are always reapeating the same episode when I tune in (how do they know?), this could prove tricky.

So can anyone recommend "must see this" episodes for Charlie characterisation? I can hear his voice, I just don't know what to have him say, if that makes any kind of sense.

Anyway, enough of my blithering.

*glares* Why haven't more of you been over to the gen battle and written comment-fic? Or the fluff battle? Come on, folks. 4300 characters really isn't that many!

Today, I am awesome because I stayed awake through a whole course about serials AND I finally got a battery fitted to my watch, which has been dead for about 2 years. I've also managed to cross off a heathy chunk of stuff from my list, although I'm procrastinating terribly about the rest.

There's always tomorrow - I don't want to use up all my awesome all at once ;)

What about you guys? I've been very low-key-awesome today. Anyone done anything more exciting?

I managed one thing for the gen battle. There are just too many prompts. I start to read the list and then my eyes cross and brain shuts down. However I REALLY want someone to write Doctor/Sesame Street with Grover as a companion. Fuzzy blue monster in special blue box. Come on people!!

Oh, hey. Should I send the SGA thing to someone else? I don't want to feel pressure if you've got all sorts of other stuff to do.

What is it with crossovers that makes them be so long, anyway? It's the number of universes shouting at you. *g*

Crossing things off your list is well awesome, never mind the other stuff.

Today I am awesome because I finally posted the WIP that grew from a comment fic to almost 17k words. Does that count as Epic? It's one of them there long crossover beasties anyway, even if it does only cover a period of hours.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! You should DEFINITELY be writing that.

Eep, no, sorry! I'm on evening duty tonight so will have plenty of time to go through and get it back to you. Expect it some time in the next 2 hours :)

Sorry :(

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think 17k definitely counts as Epic AND Awesome :D Crossovers are always about 3 times the length you originally intend - the characters seem to get chatty!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no. No tricking me into writing things again. I can stand firm this time. Really. I can.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that you still think you have a choice about these things.

*pets you*

Ahh, as if I needed more excellent reasons to start watching Numb3rs...! *g*

You are indeed awesome - you also write about your awesomeness, which is doubly awesome! Because then the rest of us get to enjoy it!

I have not panicked at an earthquake, posted my first new bit of writing in over six months (it's only a drabble, but I wrote it and posted it and it means I can write!), and written a tiny bit more on the gen SGA team h/c fic that seems determined to happen. Slow going, but - it's going! There's a plot! There is team. I am so happy. \o/

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
*hangs head* Doomed. I am so doomed.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Over the last few months, I've been wishing that I could subscribe to CBS over here in the UK - they show all the programmes I love and can just *watch* without wanting to throw things at the screen. Numb3rs, Criminal Minds, NCIS, the CSIs... It seems like a happy network, somehow, if they're churning out this kind of thing. Generic, yes. Addictive, definitely!

I have to tell you that it was the best thing *ever* this morning to open my email and have 13 comments that all began "I am awesome because..." I know you guys rock, and it's great to see everyone giving themselves credit too!

I saw [livejournal.com profile] xparrot's post about the earthquake O.O Rather you guys than me - well done for not panicking!

WOOT! It's the best feeling when the writing starts to come again - brilliant! *\o/*

omg, mild mannered Grover Kent used would jump into a telephone booth to change into Super Grover.

A telephone booth (box).

It's CANON. I am SO doomed.

Crossing stuff off your list is awesome! And *feels* awesome. :) Good job with the watch battery. I have tasks like that, too, for some reason they just languish forever.

Due to life stuff, I've been having trouble meeting my big bang daily quota, so it's been hard to get my head around writing anything else, even drabbles. It's like I don't want to get distracted. (Because that's when dragons happen!) But I did have an art (scribbly picture? Sigh, I still don't know what to call the thing I do) idea for the fluff battle. If I don't chicken out, and I manage to work it into my schedule, that will be awesome.

Your awesome posts usually come before I've had a chance to be awesome that day, other than getting out of bed and teaching morning classes. Can I refer to the previous day's awesome? I feel kind of silly always talking about ways I hope I'm going to be awesome in the future.

After a warm stormy night (bad for sleeping), it's a really, really beautiful breezy springlike day here. I wish I could send some over!

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I wanted to congratulate you for finishing that, too! I felt weird because I hadn't been reading due to not knowing the fandom, but I applaud your accomplishment!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
*DIIIIIIIIIIES*

I love your brain

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Not panicking at an earthquake is mega-awesome. I got woken up by the one in Wales 1984 that was a 5.4, and 75 miles away from me. Was pretty scary, that. Don't think I' could deal with living in Japan!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
this ensuing insanity is SO your fault.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
...I think I can live with that...

*beams*

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

If you are curious, I wouldn't worry too much about knowing Highlander or not as the Highlander universe only provides a backdrop to the fics. Just avoid the first one in the Torchwood list here (http://aeron-lanart.livejournal.com/20755.html) as that's the one with all the hand-wavy, plotty highlander stuff; everything else is pretty much character driven and based around Torchwood.

It'd be great if you can manage the art as well! Doing the Big Bang can eat your life if you're not careful.

My dear, you are always awesome, and therefore can tell me about it whenever you want :)

Fridays on Five @ 10pm (s5) and ITV3 on Thurs @ 9pm (s4). Also, I Five USA are showing old episodes at 7pm each weekday, s3 according to the TV guide.

I awesomely completed 2 sudoku puzzles today and washed a pile of icky dishes. Also, I discovered my Awesome posts on my LJ are making people smile :)

:)

Ah, that explains why I've been missing them lately - 7pm is too early, 10 is too late and I never watch ITVs! I can get hold of back-episodes, so I need to find out which will give me the bits of Charlie-history that I need to write him because he's rattling around my head at the moment being Really Annoying!

Ew, washing icky dishes is definitely awesome :S I'm finding that these posts are good for everyone - I spend all day thinking of ways to be awesome so I can tell you guys about it!

[identity profile] azure-chaos.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's great, I'm finding out that the simple things I do actually make me awesome. It's great for the self-esteem :)

The first few eps of season 5 we get to see Charlie trying to deal with having his FBI clearance revoked. It gave great insight into what motivates him when it comes to his work with them.

Not exciting, but today is awesome because I actually remembered to eat breakfast, despite being focused enough on other stuff that I didn't actually realize I was hungry until I was making food.

[identity profile] crystalshard.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I am awesome because I filled out my employee evaluation form at work. Also, I wrote a bit of fic for Z's fluff battle.

Crossovers are long because you have to build two worlds into your story, either of which your readers may not know. So it takes twice as long for the story to get going.

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
And I was going to suggest a way to get CBS shows over there early... but then I realized you have a Linux setup, and probably not a lot of HD space. *sad* Shall I beam them to you telepathically instead?

For Charlie Eppes eps, if you haven't caught the first few episodes of the show, I suggest those more than almost any other as a way to really get inside Charlie's brain. He has definitely grown as a character since then, but those seem to have all of the really fundamental points if you're wanting to crawl into his (very busy) headspace, IMO. Let me look over an episode guide and I'll give you a more exact list. Definitely the pilot, though, and the second or third.

*glares* Why haven't more of you been over to the gen battle and written comment-fic? Or the fluff battle? Come on, folks. 4300 characters really isn't that many!

*shifts gulitily* I've been trying to install Windows XP on my mini-laptop? Okay, maybe that was just last night. Actually, I've been consumed by the FIC THAT ATE MY BRAIN+SOUL+OTHER VITAL PARTS, and while I do probably need a break from it, I'm afraid if I do I won't come back and finish it.

Let's see... my awesome for today... I have (digitally) hand made e-cards for one person on my f-list, discovered a fun audio trick at work, and made plans to go to Altex as soon as I get home today to pick up provisions to conquer my OS installation issues. (Hold me. I'm going to break my baby.)
