I didn't notice your Dresden Files comment before. I got the first three books in a rummage sale (fill a bag for $5 and got tons of clothes and books and things) because they had them and people were always talking about them. The first was *meh* okay, not great, a lot of 'first time' novel issues and plotholes and things. The second bored me to tears. I gave up and didnt read it. A few months later I was laid up and desperate to read something so grabbed the third because it was there. And I really liked it.
To be fair, I should mention that I find most of his books build a good story but then 75 pages into it I start to get a bit bored and nearly always I do a bit of skimming around pg 180-230 or so.
