Oh, I definitely agree with you. It's also a consequence of getting more ambitious with character depth. They want to show us way more than the early serials worried about, but don't give the stories the space they need to breathe.
It's tempting to point them to Sapphire and Steel to show them how slow pacing can *really* work ;)
