Just showing the flash of light would have got the point across.
I'd completely forgotten she even had it until about two seconds before she drew it! If she'd gone in and we'd just seen a flash, my assumption would probably have been that it was a teleport! So I think the televisual storytelling did need the glimpse of the gun (and, indeed, the momentary uncertainty over who she was going to shoot, which did give a nice spike of tension!).
