1. He was a POW briefly, towards the end of the war. He doesn't talk about it. Ever. 2. Before Jack, he followed Jock Goody everywhere - although he can lead, he's happier in a '2nd in command' role. 3. He and Marion would have liked more children, but it wasn't to be. The energy they would have poured into their family, they put into Jack (as well as Hywel, of course!)
