2007: The Stories

Just something random before the fic list:
We went for a walk along the canal at Thrupp today (and isn't that a great place name? Not that it's much of a place, just a row of houses really, but still) where there are lots of barges moored up. One of which was called Gallifrey. This made me smile.
So, since all the cool kids are doing it, my fic list for 2007 is under the cut. I've seen various versions, but this format was nicked from
unfeathered along with other people.
Sadly, this list contains no Housefic, which is disappointing. It appears I can only write in one fandom at a time, and SGA is currently 'it'. Until we get the new season of Torchwood, that is :D
Favourite story this year: Nope, sorry, can't pick just one. I have a huge soft spot for Moonshine because it was the first time I'd written properly happy!Jack, but I'd have to say that the creation of the whole Sic Transit Tempus ficverse was my favourite writing activity of the year.
Best story of the year: Probably Las Vegas (or: Viva!) or The Key. Both Jack, but very different sides to him.
Most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Refrain, which was my sort-of Jack/Estelle piece. Small Worlds was one of my favourite Torchwood episodes, and I still want to write more about them, but I think the structure of this put a lot of people off. It was written under the influence of Barber's 'Adagio for Strings' which explains a lot about it, I always think.
Most fun story: Has to be either Personal Space or Club Night. The first because it's nice to see someone get one up on Jack, and the second because I don't often write Crack, but when I do, I really go for it.
Sexiest story: Well, Ar Hyd Y Nos and Stay With Me are the only ones that vaguely qualify for this category...
"That's wrong, even for you" story: As I discovered when it came to the "Come as you aren't" party at Halloween, there's nothing (under a 15 rating) that I won't write. :)
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: My SGA story, Making Sure. I'd assumed that, because I am frighteningly similar to him in personality, I'd be mostly writing SGA from Rodney's POV. Instead, once I found Sheppard's voice, I found him by far the easier of the two. He's not the laconic, almost taciturn man that you find in so many fanfics, and he feels stuff so deeply and does express it, albeit in his own way, that he's utter joy to write.
Hardest story to write: My
sga_santa piece, without a doubt. I started with the plot bunny that spawned Exchanges, although the original bunny for that is still waiting to be written. The second bunny I chose changed shape about half a dozen times before settling into its current state. I wasn't happy with the draft I sent off, so I've produced a revised version that I'm itching to post once the reveal takes place. *refreshes screen again*. Another candidate for this would be Cardiff Reprise (or: To Everything There Is A Season) which I knew had to really hurt, and it did.
Biggest disappointment: Not getting "The Watching Years" finished. Jack just won't talk at the moment, so I'm scouring old comments for ideas and inspiration. I'd say 'watch this space' but I don't want to give anyone ideas...
Biggest surprise: That other people want to write the Joneses! Never doing that again, In a minute, there is time, Absent Friends, Tair Gwerin and Nor all who wander lost are all wonderful takes on the family dynamic. I'm completely in love with Hugh, Hywel and Marion, as well as the supporting cast, and was completely flabberghasted when other people fell in love with them too.
Most telling story: ...I'm not 100% sure what this means, but in an odd kind of way, I think Undead, my Buffy crossover fits it. It felt more like a character study of Jack and Buffy when I was writing it, which is always more my interest than plot. To be honest, you could drive a tank through the plot holes, but I love it for the people.
A story I want remembered: Coming Back. This was the first completed story with Jack, Jock and Hugh and set the tone for what I wanted to do. It also works pretty well as a stand-alone story, and the plot bunny is morphing into an original piece - this story has legs :)
I think I'd also want the first part of A Few Quiet Drinks, Myfanwy and Fish remembered, because it definitely contains my funniest line, and has given me the confidence to attempt a longer Jack/Discworld crossover. For
tardis_bigbang *gulp*
Starting the year with what I refuse to think of as writer's block (it's not that I can't write, it's that I can only write rubbish) is not the best of beginnings, but I'm choosing to look at it this way: it can only get better! I have an awesome flist who keep me entertained and refuse to let me wallow, I'm modding two excellent comms, RL is dull, but generally good and the days are getting longer so my mood should start to lift.
As you can tell, I've decided to make 'the glass is half full' my motto for 2008 :) And I'm now off to see what everyone else thinks of their year of stories. I like this round-up thing, but then maybe I'm just lazy...
