jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Happy - McKay squee)
[personal profile] jadesfire

I'm probably squeeing too much to write anything coherent, because that? That was awesome. Also? Fanfic. But let's put that to one side for now ;)

I'm not a huge Sam Carter fan. It's not that hate the woman, I just find her hard to connect to. I still do, but this went a long way to making more sense of her for me. The three-way banter was awesome, with the allegiances switching back and forth and a really, really good mix of action and character.

The more I watch her, the more I love Keller. She's a complete dork, but also one of the most human of the characters. She knows how to handle McKay, because hey! here's someone even more dorky than her. But I like the awkwardness between her and Carter. Here's two women who should get on - bright, smart, beating the men at their own game - and yet they're having trouble with the little things. More than anything, it was the character details in this that counted. Keller's game was wonderfully revealing (of course), and I nearly fell over when she asked McKay to join. The Zelenka part made me laugh out loud - he's such a fan favourite, and yet the characters seem a little creeped by him. Certainly he didn't impress Sam in Quarantine... I loved the part about Katie so much - Rodney's such a wonderful mix of selfishness and cluelessness.

I also love that they've moved past his hopeless crush on Sam. It got grating after a while, so it's good to have it just left behind. I should also admit that technically, I didn't watch the whole episode. My tolerance for cringing is incredibly low, and I kept having to turn the sound down or switch screens so I could only hear it. But I'm aware that's just me :)

As for my fanfic comment above, let's see...

- 3 characters who don't know each other very well bonding in a life or death situation. Check.

- Injury to 'leader' character so that someone else has to step up. Check.

- Non-technical character coming up with real life solution. Check.

- Rodney hurting his hands. Check.

- Rodney saying 'we don't leave people behind', which he has obviously picked up from Sheppard. Check. (okay, variation on a theme, but still)

There were about a million other things, but none of them mattered. They took an old idea an did fantastic things with it. I was laughing, wincing and shouting at the screen for the whole episode. Good job there's no-one else in the house...

I may be more coherent later, but in the meantime, I'm going to wander round and hope other people have already done that for me :)

ETA: I can't believe I forgot to mention the cannon. Apart from being a wonderfully silly idea, I loved Keller's reaction to it. We're used to John and Rodney saving the galaxy with a packet of chewing gum, a piece of string and a paper clip, and we get blase about it. Of course they can build a cannon! Why not? So I loved Keller's surprise, the whole "You did what?"ness of it. It felt much more real and was spot on for the character. Oh, and I liked that Rodney gave her credit for the aiming, even if he fails to say thank you at the very end. He's growing. *wipes eyes* Bless.

Martin Gero and David Hewlett and I share the same humor, so I always tend to enjoy Gero's eps. I can't believe Season Four is almost over :/

Martin Gero definitely writes Rodney the best - we'll just have to make the most of it until we get S5!

I really enjoyed watching the three of them tease each other and flail around and compete ("everything's a competition," says Rodney) and finally find ways to cooperate and connect so they're more effective than the sum of their parts. ♥

They really are. I liked that they were very much themselves still - it didn't get all warm and fuzzy, even at the end. Rodney's just matter of fact about not leaving Carter behind, which felt just right. And I love that he's both action!Rodney and a complete wimp, and wonderfully, wonderfully inept. Even after everything, Keller still has to prod him at the end. I get the feeling she's adopted him as a project! It's got to be the best writing of the season so far.

You know I'm not into SGA (yet...I'm sure it's only a matter of time, what with everyone on my flist all into it...) but just stopped by to say it's nice to see you squeeing and flailing. :D I love when people are happy in fandom. Good start to my morning!

*grin* Happy to help. SGA is very silly but much fun - the bad is very, very bad, but they could teach most other writers a thing or two about character-building. Together with the sunshine, it really made my day :D

Squee! I just watched this episode, and I loved it—and Rodney! It was like watching televised fanfic. Rodney is such a sweetie. *huggles him*
