Language geeks! This site absolutely prods buttock when it comes to Latin language and grammar. If only because the heading above one of the search boxes reads:

Type in a Latin phrase or word. Press the button (or Enter). Cross your fingers.

I love Classicists.

Also, despite its age, my little Collins Latin Dictionary is still wonderful. And it's purple! I mean, if you're going to have something as soul destroying as a Latin Dictionary, it should definitely have a cheerful colour on the front. It also has grammar, cultural and historical information in it. Seriously, it rocks.

What?

Ooh, that looks useful. The teeny-tiny Collins dictionary is awesome! And the purple-ness really does make Latin more fun - I think the choice must have been a cunning marketing strategy. My Latin grammar book looked very boring by comparison until the end of the first term, when I gave in and covered it with cheerful wrapping paper in an attempt to make grammar look enticing.

I'm really impressed at how good the dictionary is - the grammar section in the back is really clear and helpful. Although it's depressing how much vocab I've forgotten in the last 2 years...

I find it depressing how much vocabulary I've forgotten over the first two weeks of the holidays, so don't be too hard on yourself! Latin vocab is a slippery thing in my experience (although slightly less confusing than Greek, where I find all the verbs look the same, and none of them resemble their infinitive!)

I was utterly, utterly hopeless at Greek and barely scraped through. In Latin, I can remember that constructions and words exist, I just have to look them up, which isn't bad considering it's 5 years since I stopped studying it!

So you don't fancy beta-ing my Latin for me then? ;)

After a year and a half, I'm very used to my Greek supervisor's "your ignorance pains me" look. I tend to ignore it and make up a story based on the couple of words I recognise. Your Latin sounds not bad at all, but I'm happy to beta if you're after someone. I have a composition exam in 3 weeks, so I'm about to immerse myself in Latin grammar anyway!

*grin* I may just take you up on that. At the moment, I'm wrestling with the subjunctive. And my memory...

Um...could I take you up on the offer, please? It's 13 near-haiku type poems, that I've roughly translated. I'm not too worried about complete accuracy, I just want to make sure that I haven't missed anything obvious.

Once I am, I'm going to go and change things anyway, since it's meant to be an alien language based on Latin, but I figure if I start with the right Latin in the first place, it's going to be easier to change.

Anyhoo, could I drop you an email?

... I think we may have the same Latin dictionary :) Mine is purple too.

That's the website I use for doing my Latin homework, actually. It's very helpful!

*grin* It's an incredibly useful dictionary!

websites to do latin homework? You lucky things. You're making me feel old... I'll send my Latin along to you to beta when I'm done, then, shall I? ;D

It's a really useful dictionary, I'd be lost without it.

I'm dreadful at Latin, I've spent half this afternoon struggling through Tacitus' military writings. *facepalm* But it's all very hi-tech, I learn it via a webcam with Cambridge university and have done for the last six years!

... So you could send me Latin and I could ruin it for you! :D

Hee. I'm taking it home to have another run at - I'm quietly pleased with it, considering.

Wow, that's seriously hi-tech. And don't worry about Tacitus - he's obscure on purpose, I swear...
