Good morning, lovelies.

I'm feeling remarkably mellow this morning, but then a three day week will do that for you. Since I have to work tomorrow, and next Saturday, and two 6 day weeks didn't appeal, I booked today as holiday. I could get used to being in my dressing gown at 8.15 in the morning.
Not a whole lot to do, which is, of course, the idea. Some typing, some audio recording, some writing, maybe some cooking, the washing, some tidying up. Nice and gentle, much pottering. Yesterday was the first time in a while that I didn't exchange a gazillion emails with the Big Bang Mods. I'm feeling quite bereft and may have to put a post in the comm to make up for it.
We watched A Tudor Feast at Christmas on the BBC iPlayer last night. Not great for the squeamish or vegetarians (I closed my eyes through bits) but it was mostly a wonderful recreation of a traditional Tudor banquet. The only woman on the team, a historian called Ruth Goodman, was just wonderful. Practical, knowledgeable and funny. I want to be her when I grow up. Of course, it then led to me having a dream about holding a Tudor feast in the library. There were Daleks there as well, for some reason, one real and two inflatable. At one point, someone (I think it was
_medley_) unzipped one of the Dalek cases and there was a sort of 'half-Dalek' inside, just the bottom half, that was full of bubbling green liquid. Very Macbeth.
I swear, I'm getting more random, which I didn't know was possible...
Rather than dig myself in deeper, I shall wish you all a happy day and invite you all to drop in for coffee at some point. I'll keep the kettle on, and there may be some biscuits later on.
Ooh, two last pieces of randomness: Wouldn't it be awesome if you could do this with your LJ Friends list?.
And I think some of you will love these science quotation icons, just in case you haven't seen them.
List for today:
*I'm thinking of trying to write something for Iris magazine, and that was a subject that interested me during my degree, so I figure it's a good place to start!

Date: 2008-05-09 11:50 am (UTC)It's so lovely to have a pottering day, when I don't have to do anything - makes everything a bonus!
Hope you get your chores done!

Date: 2008-05-09 10:08 am (UTC)Must get round to watching that. I'm fascinated by the history of cooking and I've cooked the odd medieval feast in my time (there's a particular brilliant recipe for a fish stew that involved crab, white fish and pomegranates that I really must dig out again). In fact, it came from this book (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/080760898X/bedesworldwhe-21?dev-t=D3AJAZAU4TLO0J) which I can recommend.

Date: 2008-05-09 11:51 am (UTC)I like the idea of trying these kinds of recipes, but I think they shall have to wait for a week when we're feeling flush and can afford something that's not pasta... ;)

Date: 2008-05-09 10:17 am (UTC)I like the idea of that mobile thing, although I have to say I'm in the 'wouldn't it be easier to just go over and say hi' camp.
Good luck with the to do list. Now, what was that about coffee? *looks hopeful*

Date: 2008-05-09 12:00 pm (UTC)*g* It probably would be easier, but it would also be fun to go over and know someone by name before you've met them. It'd also help someone like me who has trouble remembering her own name, let alone everyone else's...
*passes coffee* and I may have a surprise for you later [/mysterious] :D

Date: 2008-05-09 01:09 pm (UTC)I'd seen some of the quotes but not all of them, so I thought they might amuse other people as well :D

Date: 2008-05-09 01:53 pm (UTC)I kind of love your dream! I hope it wasn't too scary - it sounds cool. *Inflatable* Daleks + Tudor feast + library sounds almost like something out of Pratchett. Maybe Douglas Adams + Pratchett. :)
That cell phone networking thing seems just a little creepy for me, but I'm a lover of anonymity, so I suppose I wouldn't need to worry - I probably wouldn't have a public MySpace profile. It's the part about anybody's cell phone being able to access other people's positions on the earth that gets me. Imagine the stalker potential! On the other hand, if you couldn't find your friends (or your teenagers!) at the amusement park or the mall, it could be very handy. :)
I am having my first cup of tea and watching a squirrel eat birdseed on my balcony. (My cat is also watching her, with considerably more body tension.)

Date: 2008-05-09 02:25 pm (UTC)The dream wasn't scary for once, just bizarre. The inflatable Daleks were my favourite. I woke up at about 4 and could hear all the birds going nuts outside. It was still pitch black, but they must be able to sense the dawn or something, because they were singing their little hearts out :)
I thought that about the phone thing as well - it's one of those double-edged swords, because it would also be quite useful if you were shy and wanted to know if there was someone you 'knew' at a party or something. There's always good sides and bad sides to these things, I think.
*g* lucky squirrel, and poor Fuzz...

Date: 2008-05-09 02:06 pm (UTC)And yay for dressing gowns! It's only 7 am here and I am still in mine, but I'm kind of hoping to still be there at 8:15 :D

Date: 2008-05-09 02:26 pm (UTC)It's definitely my luxury, to get up and not have to get dressed right away. That way, I know I'm on holiday. :)
