I'm killing myself laughing here, so thought I'd share.

the story so far (we came in late):

Slovenia. One word. Chains. Two actually. Wheelie Trainers. Just...watch it, alright?

The girl from Norway was quite pretty, boring song but nice dress. The girl from Poland who followed has definite potential for wardrobe malfunction, so let's hope she gets through.

Andorra. Dig that funky armour. And that hair.

Bosnia&Herzegovina. There's a guy in the laundry basket! Gah! He has red shoes and a drawn on moustache. And the backing singers are wearing wedding dresses. it remind me a little of the cirque du soleil, except they don't generally have washing on the stage as well. Apparently they have to do what someone called Laka calls them. Huh. Now the brides are knitting. Just when I thought it couldn't get weirder...

Armenia. So what does 'qele' actually mean? And where did she get that dress with all the fringe? Very cute. And where did she leave the song's key? And how fit are those dancers? She may not be able to sing, but she still has 3 fit guys falling at her feet. It's not all bad. Well, the song is...

The Netherlands. Nice voice, great figure, good dress but for heaven's sake, hon, don't bounce too enthusiastically. Lots of rhyming in the song. Someone got a rhyming dictionary for Christmas. But still, pretty good.

Finland. Awesome. Metallica, eat your heart out. Do you have a guy with an axe playing a big drum at the back of the stage when you play? Didn't think so. Oh wow, that one's got a mace!

Romania. Nico and Vlad. Vlad? Well...the costume works for that, except isn't Vlad normally the guy? And her skirt appears to be sprouting luminous green seaweed. Nice.

In between, we get weightlifters. One of whom is very big in the Balkans *cough* according to the commentator. You can certainly tell that from his costume...

Russia. One guy likes writhing on the floor, one is rather over friendly with his violin, and the the third is ice-skating. Yes, for real. Isn't the guy without shoes getting really cold feet? The words "camp", "more than" and "a boy scout jamoboree" spring to mind...

Greece. Ooh, bouncy dancers. Cool. Er...where did her dress go? And what a shiny...er...corset? She's giving good wiggle, it has to be said. The pop-up garden was also quite fun.

And, finally, not in order but definitely in noteriety, Ireland. Who entered a turkey. Yes, really a turkey. Seriously, do whatever you have to to See This Video. I can't even begin to describe it, except to say that I really hope it gets through so that I can hear what Terry Wogan makes of it.

It's A Turkey. A Turkey. For real.

(From the recaps:)

Montenegro - 14 but wearing leather trousers
Israel - Not bad, decent song.
Estonia - Madness manque but with cheerleaders.
Moldova - She's got a teddy bear. But no sense of pitch.
San Mariano - very synth rock
Belgium - not doing anything for national stereotypes...
Azerbaijan - He's wearing wings! He's wearing wings!

I really don't advise it. Some are wonderfully silly, but others are just surreal. We mostly watch to mock :D

*g* The BBC site gives the history if you really want it. Mostly, it now seems to be a forum for international mockery. Which is probably healthier than anything else countries could be doing to each other...

i saw the turkey when Dana was on Loose Women a couple of months ago or so and if i recall rightly she was quite embarrassed by it. Lets face it though, its one way to make sure you don't end up hosting the contest. Altho, with how popular the Teletubbies say eh-oh was when they released it there's really no telling.

thanks for your comments on it tho...completely forgot it was on. looking forward to Wogan snark goodness on saturday :)

*g* I haven't checked yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if the turkey got through to the final. Personally, I'm rooting for the scary woman from Slovenia, who had the guys in helmets and chains and wheelie trainers. Either her, or the girl from Armenia with the three very flexible guys around her. Or Greece with their pop-up garden.

Shallow? me?

WHAT I wasn't even aware that that was today! Ach. The Eurovision is the funnest lame TV night of the year! Or the lamest fun TV night? It's LAME and AWESOME and also tends to be CREEPY WEIRD! I love it.

How could I have missed the turkey? :-(

And man, those Fins and their metal. It's tradition by now.

(We are obviously rooting for the Israeli guy, who's a kid my sister knows. So that's cool. Even though I, uh, haven't really been listening to the radio this year, so I've only heard his song, like, once.)

Isn't it brilliant? I'm seriously thinking of seeing if people want to come round for a Eurovision party on Saturday - we had one a couple of years ago that was so much fun. If not, maybe I'll just blog my way through again, adding the other half's snark this time :)

Ooh, that is cool about the Israeli guy. The little bit of the song that I heard sounded okay, so hopefully he got through and I'll hear the whole thing on Saturday!

we here in Croatia look upon it as a once-in-every-year opportunity to, once again, embarrass ourselves in front millions and millions of viewers *tongue-in-cheek* and then crawl somewhere and quietly die of embarrassment *g* all in all,god bless Eurovision;whoever thought of this perfection should be rewarded with a mix of the winner songs of the past 10 yrs as well as maybe some nice costume leftovers...sounds like the Romanians outdid themselves in the costume department this year..*g*

Yay! It's nice to know other countries don't take it seriously either. I don't think Croatia were on last night, so I shall look out for them tomorrow.

The Romanian costume had plenty of skirt, but I was pleased that the singer had long hair that fell over her shoulders, because the neckline (*ahem*bust-line, more like*ahem*) looked like it could go at any moment...

There you are, you can see the wings in all their campy goodness. But if you want the real camp, go for the Russian entry. They had the world ice-skating champion on stage. For real. And a guy who looked like he and his violin should get a room...

Pure crack. just wonderful.

The semi-finals (yesterday and tomorrow) are being hosted by Paddy O'Connell and a girl whose name I don't know but is really good too. O'Connell presents Broadcasting House on R4 normally, and really has deadpan humour and snark down to an art form. Definitely recommended.

Terry's back on Saturday. Can't wait :D

I started watching from Bosnia. And promptly spent the next 3 minutes sounding like Ten at the beginning of VOTD XD.

That's what we get from the collapse of the Eastern Bloc - hours and hours and hours of dodgy songs and politics ;)

Hee. And Russian ice-skaters. don't forget the Russian ice-skater. *falls over laughing*

I can't remember the last time I giggled that much :D
