Very Quickly

Does anyone have a 'walk softly and carry a big stick' icon? I swear I've seen someone around here use it...
Why yes, I'm icon shuffling again. Shush, I'm having fun and heaven knows this day could use it :P
I should never, ever click links to the Daily Mail, not even for Doctor Who news. Because the way the article reads, it's like Freema Agyeman and Catherine Tate took over the role of Rose. That's not even bias or ignorance, it's just plain lazy writing.
Also, Eurovision is now a public vote. I'm not saying that politics don't come into it, but stop and think for a second. PUBLIC vote. Unless we're talking about a Justice for Sir Cliff-type situation, there are other reasons that the Eastern European countries are voting for each other. The music will be close to their local tastes than to Western European ones. The Russian entrant is a huge pop star in Russia, which has a huge influence over its neighbours. Not everyone living in a country is originally from that country, which is why Germany traditionally gives high marks to Turkey - the Turkish population there are allowed to vote for Turkey, unlike the Turkish population in Turkey. It's hugely frustrating, and I'm sure national politics come into it somewhere along the line, but to ignore all the above is just plain lazy thinking. This is no longer a conspiracy, folks.
Personally, the Greek entry is the only one I could now hum you a snatch of, and that did pretty well too. The UK entry was utterly forgettable, although there's no way on earth that Spain should have done better than us. But such is the way of these things. If we're going to send a rubbish song, France and Spain are going to send comedy entries, and no one else from Western Europe gets through, then Western Europe are going to do badly.
I think what's bugging me is the lack of thought in the various opinion pieces I've read. There may well have been a global conspiracy to ensure that Russia win Eurovision. May they bankrupt themselves on it like most other countries end up doing for this kind of thing *coughLondon2012cough*. Why'd you think Ireland entered a turkey...

Date: 2008-05-26 03:41 pm (UTC)Also, yes, Eastern bloc countries vote for each other, just like Ireland and Britain and Malta usually vote for each other. It's not exactly a surprise, especially not, as you say, the Russian guy's a popular artist in his home country. Just cos he's not famous here doesn't make him not famous.
[FYI, according to my Swedish friend, the Swedish entrant was their equivalent of Jordan. I am ridiculously in love with the idea of a Swedish Jordan. I just hope she has an equally vacuous boyfriend.]

Date: 2008-05-26 02:17 pm (UTC)(As you might guess, the common local half-joking excuse for our not winning is that the rest are antisemites, which is the excuse I hate most in the world, because it is what it is, and because I know that deep down, a lot of people who use it really are only half-joking.)
