So. Meme.
HUGE and MANY images behind the cuts. The full set is also at my flickr account, with a few extras thrown in.
For Rustydog, who asked for 'something you look forward to seeing while you're walking'
This is Gees restaurant on the Banbury Road. It's a nice place to eat, but it's also my 'only fifteen more minutes' marker when I'm walking to work.

For Smtfhw who asked for 'architecture'
In Oxford, it's more a case of 'what do I choose???' than anything else. So I just snapped away at everything that didn't move.
This is the building site that annoys me on a daily basis…

And this is the front view. Much nicer (even with the crane!).

The Sheldonian Theatre (the round one) and the Clarendon Building on Broad Street.

The Bridge of Sighs and Hertford College

Famously, when Keble College was built, St John's College next door strenuously objected, and they have been stealing one brick every year since 1870. It's going to take them a while, but Oxford thinks in centuries, rather than years…

And the most architectural shot of the lot, the five orders of architecture, displayed in the Old Schools Quadrangle at the Old Bodleian.

For Donutsweeper who asked for 'fabulous'
I wasn't sure what to take for this one, then I was taking a picture of Gees, and look what's next door!

But by then, I'd also taken a picture of the Radcliffe Camera, which I also think is fabulous. Two things you should know about it: #1. Camera is just the Latin for 'room'. No photography going on here. #2. It's a library! How cool is that?

And finally, what could be more fabulous than a pink pub?

For miss_zedem who asked for 'carefree'
This one may seem a bit more cryptic, but you see that little gang of students there? They've finished their last exams of the term – when I walked past them, I saw they were wearing red carnations, which is Oxford code for "It's my last exam!!" Students have to wear sub fusc to exams, which is the black and white outfit with a gown over the top, and their mortar boards carried. Then they wear a white carnation for their first exam, pink for the middle ones, and red for the last. Colleges differ in tradition, but at mine, you weren't supposed to buy them for yourself – it's lovely getting flowers for friends just before exams!

Along the same lines, this is Trinity College garden, with gazebos set up for taking graduation photos under.

I also took some pretty pictures in the University Parks which seemed appropriate.

For in_the_bottle who asked for NOM!
I knew instantly what I was going to take for this:
nom

NOM

NOM!!!!

For smithy161 who asked for 'mythical'
Another puzzling one, and I hope you can see it. These are gargoyles (or technically grotesques) on the buildings along New College Lane. Most of them are in the shape of animals, but these are scarab beetles.

Also, the lamppost may seem even more random, but it always makes me think of the one just on the other side of the wardrobe in Narnia. Also on New College Lane.

The Natural History Museum is a wonderful building, and looks like it should be a Gothic Castle.

For matsujo9 who asked for portable
These were the first things that sprang to mind… The laptop's a bit heavy, but still. My life would be much poorer without these three things :D

Phew! That was hard work! But much fun too. Thanks for playing! :D

Date: 2008-06-26 06:44 pm (UTC)Also: what a lovely tradition with the flowers for exams! I've never heard of that.
The architectural photos are lovely. I'm going to do this meme once I get a better camera, cos everyone thinks of Cardiff as quite a drab city, which I think is deeply unjust (although TW's gone a long way to improving this image with its arial pr0n shots :)).
I was also cooing and going 'I remember walking past that!', although it was considerably rainier when I visited last...

Date: 2008-06-26 10:24 pm (UTC)And those pics of Oxford really made me wish I'd made the effort of heading out in my 2nd last day in UK, instead of staying in and watching 1 and a half seasons worth of Psych. LOL!
*thinks about giving this meme a go*

Date: 2008-06-27 01:06 am (UTC)I totally dig 'Gees' and the Library!
I'm also homesick for European architecture. These buildings are sooo kool! I lived in Germany for a lot of years and I miss the old buildings and beautiful architecture, very much.
The flowers are also pretty nice.
I'm glad I saw these photos.

Date: 2008-06-27 02:33 am (UTC)It's great to have those markers. How far is your walk? I remember you mentioning it once, but I've forgotten.
I'm glad the weather was cooperating for you when you took the pictures! They're lovely, and it gives a nice idea of your environs. Bellflowers! Pretty. And I love that there's something called the Bridge of Sighs.

Date: 2008-06-27 07:59 am (UTC)Oxford's a fantastic place to live, really. The Bridge of Sighs isn't actually identical to the one in Venice - they copied the wrong bridge! But no one had heard of the other one, so the name stuck...
