jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Cute - Boo helmet)
[personal profile] jadesfire
This was typed on the bus to Oxford this morning, but wi-fi on the move being what it is, I'm actually posting it from my mother's computer this evening. Long day. Good day. Happy list below.

Just quickly, though, I'm going to sign myself up for [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary, so if anyone feels like pulling my stuff apart, please do so! Everything's linked from the sidebar, or will be soon. [livejournal.com profile] unfeathered did a great job on 'Beat of Drums' last year, and pulled out some useful critical stuff that I've been able to use. I'll sign myself up, then everyone's welcome who wants a go!

1. Dentist today. Don't look at me like that, I like my dentist. Plus, since I used to swallow the toothpaste when I was little, I gave myself fluoride poisoning and so have teeth enamel approximately the strength of reinforced concrete. I have no fillings, and although my teeth are stained from it, I can live with that if it means minimal dentistry for the rest of my life.

2. Day out with my mum. We haven't had a girly day together since Christmas, so I'm really looking forward to it. I helped her to buy a video iPod this week, so will set that up for her as well – anyone got any tips for me before I start? I'm a Creative Zen girl myself, so this is unknown territory.

3. Myers-Briggs day tomorrow. The last one I did was in January 2005, so I'm intrigued to see how and if I've changed. I'm pretty sure I'm more extrovert and less judging (to do with how you organise things, not being judgemental) than I used to be, so it's going to be interesting.

4. The bus driver selling me a young person's ticket, because 'you look 25'. Bless him, made my morning that did.

5. I had my first ever Margarita yesterday. To give you the short version of the background, I don't drink through a combination of conscious decision and disliking the taste of alcohol. But I recently discovered that I like Pimms (in Oxford, how could I not?), and I tried some of the other half's Margarita the other week and really liked it. The one I had yesterday was much, much stronger than his, and less icy, so I only drank half of it. I was rather warm and slightly giddy afterwards, but otherwise enjoyed it very much. He plans to start me on Champagne next. Hee.

6. I got a big typing job yesterday which should go a long way towards the baby computer I want to buy. I want something about the size of an Eee, and although I love the Eees themselves, on a limited budget, one of the equivalents might do the job. Since I plan to buy in January, hopefully some of them will be in the sale!

7. We move in a week! However much I hate packing and the process of moving, I'm looking forward to living somewhere new. It's a really nice little flat that we're moving to, so I shall let you have pictures once everything's unpacked.

8. I need to buy a new mobile. My contract ends in August, and I can finally get rid of my current handset which is nice to use, but a pain in the neck when it comes to signal strength. I'd like something that could actually detect the network, if that's not too much to ask..

9. I've written my preview for my [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang story (which I'll run past first readers on Monday). Some of the previews have been awesome in the extreme - [livejournal.com profile] aesc's looks like it's going to be an incredibly cool story, and there's a preview today for a story that's nearly 250,000 words. *mind boggles* I fear that's the kind of thing I'll only be able to get through with a week's holiday and a really big monitor. Which is sort of a shame, but I'm sure I'll find other things to keep me entertained.

I'm also really in the mood to write at the moment, and have lots of things I want to get done in August. Since I write better with deadlines, this is my current list:

- [livejournal.com profile] gateverse_remix story. By MONDAY.
- Jack/Suzie Torchwood story.
- SGA teamfic with Torchwood…elements.
- Story in someone else's ficverse that I'm not saying anything about until it's written.
- The Watching Years. I know what I've been doing wrong now. I just have to work out how to fix it. At the moment, I think it's about 8 stories long, although it wouldn't surprise me if it's more shorter ones or 4 seriously long ones…
- SGA Gen, John and Rodney, to complete the set of 'First Contact' and 'Finding Their Way'.

I'll whack the [livejournal.com profile] gateverse_remix story in here when it's done, for anyone who's around to pull apart. I have to get it done by Sunday to get it in for Monday, and will take all and any suggestions with extreme gratitude! Right now, I'm going to finish ripping stuff to my mother's Zen (yes she has 2 players. don't ask) then toddle off to bed. Probably nothing from me tomorrow, but full update and fic late on Sunday. Have a good weekend, everyone!

1. I like the dentist too, although I haven't been for ages - a moving thing rather than an avoidance thing. Good, positive childhood experiences with a lovely dentist who used to make me laugh, not cry :)

2. Pass. But I'm sure the flirting must have helped...

3. Always useful to compare and contrast how you change over time *nods sagely*

4. Hee, I love it when that happens :D

5. Pimms, good. Cocktails, good. Champagne... meh. I've never understood why people rave about it, tbh, and I do like most alcohol... In fairness, I do like some of the New World sparkling wines, and in general I don't like French still wines, so at least I'm consistent. If you try it and don't like it, don't give up - orange juice will turn it into a very nice Bucks Fizz, or just order rosé next time...

6. Yay for typing job, but I have no idea what an Eeee is :S

7. Yay for new flat :)

8. Yay for new mobile - I ♥ Nokia, but that's cos I'm a simple soul...

9. Um, got your email today when we finally set up 'puter - sorry! Hope the Js were more helpful than me ;)

- isn't that done already?
- YAY Jack/Suzie
- *makes interested noises*
- *wriggles happily*
- Gen John/Rodney! \o/

*dashes in quickly*

*giggle* Everyone else thinks in lists too!

6. *rolls eyes* That's what Google's for ;) They're laptops the size of hardback books. Awesome.

9. It's not too late! All help still gratefully received.

I wrote my original remix, but I took on a pinch-hit that I just need to find time to sit and write - maybe on the bus tonight!

Nice to have you back! *squishes you*

*dashes off again* :)

1. I did not know fluoride poisoning would strengthen tooth enamel! That's handy.

5. Margaritas are pretty tasty! I'm glad you enjoyed yours. My parents were teetotalers while I was growing up, as far as I knew, but in the past couple of years my mom has developed a taste for margaritas. It's the funniest thing. They can't even buy alcohol because they live in a dry county, so when they come visit me in the city, my dad goes to the liquor store and stocks up on tequila. ::shakes head:: So weird. Hee.

(ETA, whoops, I forgot #6)
6. There are ultraportable computers cheaper than the EeePC? Cool! It was one of two on the market when I bought mine, and was the cheapest one I could find. After spending 6 months with my Eee now, I can give a review, in case it's worth anything to you - as a sole, main computer it's somewhat inconvenient, but if you're using it as intended, for when you're on the go, it's wonderful. Also, the Eee comes with a Linux OS, and if you don't know Linux you can't customize it at *all*, nor can you fix problems when they come up. But if you have a Linux-geeky friend or spouse that wouldn't be a problem. Hmm, I guess my main recommendation, then, if you're not looking at the Eees, is to get one with an OS you're familiar with. And then enjoy! My niece calls mine the "munchkin computer" and adores it for its cuteness. :)

7. I thought that was coming up. Wow. Busy time for you, but I'm glad you like where you're going! Sometimes a change is such a good thing, and you can have fun setting things up the way you want. (Also, less construction noise I hope?)

Jack/Suzie Torchwood story.

- The Watching Years.

Squee and double squee! (I was thinking a lot about Suzie this week, and as always happens when I do, I thought of your Suzie story in the "Five Times Jack Helped..." fic, the one where she lost her purse. I love that.)

1. Handy, if not exactly pretty. My teeth are kinda stained and a bit deformed at the back. On the plus side, they could probably survive the worst even coca-cola could throw at them ;)

5. Hee. It's really nice to be able to order 'real' drinks when we go out, and I really like the taste.

6. *giggle* cnet.com have got some reviews of Eee alternatives. There's an Acer one that's pretty good, and is what I'm looking at at the moment. Mind you, it's not as cute as the Eee...

7. The construction noise is at work, so unfortunately I'm stuck with that for the time being, but yes, it will be very nice to have a change. The flat we're moving to is only a few feet from the river - I'm going to be able to feed the ducks from the living room!

The enthusiasm is much appreciated! The Jack/Suzie has been percolating for a while now, so I really need to get on and write it. It's a terrible shame that Suzie's so forgotten in fic, and I really want to write her as a person, not as psycho-nutcase. We shall see what happens...

Finding the time to write it down is always the problem. The Jack/Suzie story is the result of an eighteen-month-old plot bunny that I finally got a grip on, and with the Watching Years, I'm still not sure where it's going, but I know where it's not going, which is just as important.

Good luck with yours!
