*falls over* I have had it with this week. Enough is enough. I want the weekend and I want it now! I also want to listen to this programme on Radio 4 - the other half heard it and said it was brilliant. Computer hacking for a living? Legally? Cool. That may cheer up an otherwise gloomy day.
Having said that, I'm somewhat overwhelmed by the amount of love sent my way by the Love Meme. I just...thank you. It's the kind of thing you don't realise you need until you've got it. Go get yourselves signed up so I can return the favour! *shoos you* In this state of mind it was possibly unwise to go looking for fic, but let's be honest here, I'm not that bright...
The Other Side of Grace [SGA; PG-13; Gen] by
sardonicsmiley is a kidfic with a twist, and manages to give John incredible depth of emotion without turning him into a whining mess. It's heartfelt and not everyone's cup of tea, probably, but I loved it.
On the slightly more feel-good side is Friendship [Torchwood; PG-13; Gen] by
fajrdrako, which is a between-the-seasons fic with a warm tone and a great ending that made me giggle every time (yes I beta~d, I'm biased, so sue me, it's good!)
Today's XKCD. Oh. So true.
And speaking of which, our broadband is working! With wireless! Seriously, I can't recommend O2 highly enough - everything was incredibly easy and just worked. After the nightmare that was TalkTalk, it's been almost scarily easy. But that means I WILL be connected next week while I'm off work, and therefore around to pester you even more than usual :D Incidentally, if anyone has free time and wants to come see me, I'm always up for giving sight-seeing tours. It'll cut into my rigorous schedule of sleeping, watching DVDs, sleeping, cooking, sleeping and writing, but I can make the time.
Anyone who doesn't read Neil Gaiman's blog, a)why not? and b)go check out the posts for the last couple of days. He's in China at the moment, so his two daughters were allowed at the blog. *covers face with hands* So. Much. Trouble. Also, there was a mention of Good Omens Slash in a post, which elicited questions, which got them the answer:
".....slash fiction is basically erotic fan fiction, normally TV series based, pairing off two (er or more I suppose) members of the same sex who don't normally couple for the cameras. From the "/" mark in the middle of "Kirk/Spock" or "K/S" fiction, which is where it all started. ("But Spock," said Kirk, huskily, realising, finally, irrevocably, what his true self had been trying to tell him ever since the beginning of season one, "it's so huge. And it's green." "And it would be logical for you to... touch it, Captain," said Spock. And so on. It's normally written by extremely nice ladies. I have several very sane, respected, and respectable friends who write slash fiction, and do not try to make me read it.)"
I don't think there's anything to add to that really.
Ooh, except that I picked up the "Work in Progress" meme from
dune_drd and for the first time in ages, I actually have them! Yay! Okay, there are only three, but that's more than enough for me, who usually likes to dash things out as quickly as possible. There's also an epic Housefic lurking at the back of my harddrive that I do intend to dig out and polish, as well as a project that Chrys, Z and I said we'd take on. In the meantime:
From my Jack&Suzie fic, working title "Rio"
"I'm sure." Her drinks arrive, and Suzie presses the glass of water to her forehead for a moment, before taking a few long gulps. It makes her head hurt worse for a moment, then the tension eases into something approaching relief. Jack is still watching her carefully, and when she's finished drinking, he takes the glass from her, barely sipping from it before reaching out and pressing it to the back of her neck. She jumps again, then closes her eyes in relief, because yes, that's just what she needed. A trickle of water runs down her back, tickling and soothing at the same time.
"Better?" Jack asks, and she smiles, opening her eyes.
"Much. Did you find him?"
Nodding, Jack takes the glass away from her, making her skin flare with heat for a moment. She wraps a hand around her cocktail glass as Jack talks, and she presses herself against the bar, trying to absorb more of its coolness.
"He's in one of the dining rooms for now, and I'm fairly sure he's got the goods on him. If we can get to him this quickly, we might not be here for the whole week after all."
"Pity. Any suggestions?" Because he wouldn't be in here if the guy was his type. She swaps hands on her glass, pressing her now-cool fingers to the base of her throat as she takes a sip. The drink is too sweet and she grimaces a little.
Jack shrugs, pulling his shirt further open. Only he could make a Harlequin costume that suggestive. "Go play nice. Make friends. See what you can get."
From my
artword fic, provisional title "Subject to Interpretation"
"Even Rodney makes mistakes," Elizabeth pointed out, sounding a little disappointed, and Teyla had opened her mouth to offer some words of comfort, when John sat bolt upright and pointed out into the featureless landscape.
"There."
It took Teyla a moment to see what he was pointing at, a tiny dot on the horizon that grew as they flew towards it. Doctor Almunia was on her feet, leaning on the back of Elizabeth's chair and exchanging an excited grin with her. Teyla kept her eyes fixed on the thing in the distance, staring so intently that it was hard to pick out the moment that it became more than a dark smudge against the yellow sand, the shape changing every time she blinked, until she could make out the whole structure. The Jumper came to a stop just a few hundred meters away, and she heard John whistle under his breath.
"Looks like McKay's done it again."
From the top sekkrit fic, working title "Hydra"
"What's happening?" Doctor Weir was holding onto his arm with both hands, trying to push forwards. When he looked back and down, Stackhouse could see that her nails were bitten and ragged, the skin around her thumbs red and scabbed.
"Please, ma'am, I need you to stay down and stay quiet." He ducked reflexively as there was the sound of gunfire – automatic weaponry, probably P90s – from further down the corridor. "Until we know what's going on, all I care about is keeping you alive and in one piece."
"Keeping both of us in one piece," she said, tilting her head a little.
He grinned humorlessly. "You think the Colonel's going to make my life worth living if I let anything happen to you?"

All the temperature and touch sensation description before that is *wonderful*. I've been excited about your Jack & Suzie fic ever since you mentioned it the first time.
He grinned humorlessly. "You think the Colonel's going to make my life worth living if I let anything happen to you?"
Ah, great line.
Also, eeee! Gaiman's slash response is definitely going in my quote file. Thanks for sharing.
