Instant reaction to Torchwood: Lost Souls

Torchwood Three - Please don't link to this.

Rather random thoughts below the cut...

I kept getting interrupted so I haven't managed to just sit and listen all the way through in one go, but very quick reactions:

Liked:
- Jack. duh. But seriously, JB's performance was pretty solid.
- Gwen. Definitely the best performance of the bunch. Although she must be really fit to have a conversation like that while riding a bike and not sound out of breath.
- The mentions of Tosh and Owen, however poor Martha's timing was. That definitely worked.

Disliked:
- The writing, which was so clunky in places. I'd assumed from it that Joseph Lidster was a TV writer. Remind me to avoid his Big Finish titles.
- Freema Agyeman. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I adore Martha beyond all reason, but some of Freema's performance made me absolutely wince.
- The head physicist (Dr. Johnson?). JB pulled off the technobabble better than usual, but her reactions were just... Maybe I just have ultra-high standards for my radio actors, but this really felt like she was hamming it up. "You mean I actually get to see the Higgs?" *wince* I'm trying to work out if it was her fault or the writing.

Overall, it was fun, but it's not going on my must-listen list. The plot worked, although I'm highly amused that even the Torchwood writers like whumping Ianto. Poor bloke can't seem to catch a break, and there were parts of this where, I'm sorry GDL, but you whinged like a girl. Worse than a girl, actually, given how great Gwen was in contrast. I'll download it just to hear it without interruption, and for the reactions to Tosh and Owen's deaths which were great (SGA, this is how you do continuity) but otherwise, I think Torchwood's possibly better on the telly.

Then we also get to see how pretty everyone is. :)

Even though I'm used to the format, it took me a few minutes to get adjusted to my TV people being in an audio - but that may have been because they were Educating the Audience during that whole bit. That was actually what I found most cringeworthy, though kind of in a sweet way that made me laugh. I was thinking I could take Lost Souls to my class and use it as a science listening exercise. :)

I thought Eve Myles' performance was the best too. I expected that, though, based on the audiobook readings I've heard. (Haven't heard GDL do one, come to think of it...)

I'm highly amused that even the Torchwood writers like whumping Ianto.

Heh. I was thinking that too, though I forgot the term whumping.

I liked that it was basically a story about grief. Very appropriate, and it's true, you don't always get that in the appropriate places, or at all, with some TV shows.

Ianto's bike has a bell!

Well, it was a good, concise and understandable explanation of what the LHC does, so it might be interesting for your class :) GDL sounded like he was still getting the hang of audiodrama, but Eve was awesome.

Hee - 'whump' is part of the standard vocab for SGA, so it was the first thing that came to mind. TW tends to use 'woobie' which is much sillier ;)

I did like the basic premise of the story, but I couldn't help feeling it would have been better as a TV episode. The above makes it sound like I didn't enjoy it, which I did, but I'm so used to radio drama - really good radio drama - that this just fell a bit short for me.
