jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Happy - Zelenka whee)

Since I just got my Yuletide assignment and am a very happy camper, I thought I should put this in here:

*waves* Hi there and thank you! Hopefully most of what you need to know about me is around this journal, but just in case...

I'm a Gen girl to the bottom of my UST-loving soul. It's not that I don't see the romance, I just like it understated, in looks and glances and telling phrases and in-jokes rather than right up front to be seen. I love stories where the characters really *know* each other, or are getting to know each other. I like adventure and humour and banter and the little details that really bring a story together.

But really, my biggest love is filling in the gaps. I love to know how things happened, where they came from, what the history is. How did they learn the things they know, and what are the backstage consequences of the things we see 'on screen'? I like tight character studies and full-blown romps. I have no objections to angst or character death or non-happy endings, as long as that's the *right* ending for the story. One of my favourite tropes in fanfic is moving backwards and forwards in time, and showing how the past creates the present creates the future.

In Sapphire and Steel, I love the gentle teasing between the two of them, and the way nothing ever gets explained about who they are and how they do what they do. That mystery is important to me. I'd love to see one of the adventures that gets mentioned but not shown, or something from their early days of working together - if they have early days the way we understand it. An exploration of Steel's abilities would be the icing on the cake.

In 1602, like pretty much everyone else (I suspect), I'd love to know what that damn spider actually *did* to Peter, but really anything with Peter or Fury would make me do a happy chair dance of joy. If I'm honest, I have less interest in the Javier school characters, but adore Doom and Natasha, Enrique, Wanda and Pietro. Apparently I'm all about the supporting cast. Something about the influence of Fury on Peter, or what Natasha did next would thrill me.

In The Man From UNCLE my dream fic is always going to be a case-style fic, with a cunning-yet-easily-defeated villain, a plan for world domination and a pretty girl. Yes, I'm shallow. No, I don't care. I'd love to see Napoleon charm his way through, and Illya wear silly disguises and get the girl. Or something that shows them as competent rather than blundering, where Napoleon's a proper spy and they're both dangerous.

Mostly, I'd love something which shows the characters off. I like to think that the characters in these fandoms are rounded, fleshed out, human beings, and I'd love a fic that shows that.

Since this has either been hopelessly general or way too specific, I shall stop there, say thank you again and happy writing!

Jades

OMG, I loved "The Man fro UNCLE". I have some of their episodes on video. I had such a crush on Napoleon Solo. :D Never in my wildest imaginations did I ever think I'd see that name on a Live Journal site. You made my day! :D

*grin* I always liked Illya best. There seems to be a fairly active comm over at [livejournal.com profile] network_command, and I know the File 40 (http://file40.net/) archive has some awesome stuff in it.

Glad to oblige! :D

Hee. Sapphire and Steel and The Man From UNCLE share an actor (David McCullum), and 1602 is a graphic novel by Neil Gaiman. They're all awesome and I can't wait to see what I get! :)

Fic writers get so many cool little things like this. There are definite advantages to having a ready-made frame of reference.

*grin* Yeah, it's very cool, and there are huge, huge advantages.

On the downside, if you screw up characterisation or continuity, everybody notices. It's a 50/50 thing, I think. One of my NaNo issues was that I created a good frame of reference for the world, but forgot to do the same for my characters, because I'm out of the habit. I'm also not used to no one else knowing what the people are meant to be like - it's nice but...weird.
