Do you know what I just did? Do you? Huh?

I just installed VLC on my laptop.

'So what?' I hear you say. Well, my laptop is an Acer Aspire One, which means it has Linux rather than Windows. As someone who's only ever used Windows, I've limited myself so far to just using the computer as is, but I really, really wanted VLC on here. But you have to type stuff into command lines and know what you're doing and all kinds of scary stuff like that. There's no 'add or remove programs' window here (well, technically there is, but it doesn't include VLC). So I had to type the code to run a Fedora update, then type the code for installing VLC.

And yes, that was only 4 words, but when you're used to button clicks, that's scary.

Anyhoo, I am stupidly proud of myself here and am off to find some books to do something to. If I can do this, I can do anything!

*chair boogies*

*twirls* I am stupidly proud of myself considering all I did was copy type a few lines of code. But it's Linux, and therefore a major achievement ;)

*beams* It actually wasn't too scary once I followed the instructions I found on a forum, but it's still slightly alarming typing in code rather than clicking "add program" :D

You are mighty! I have been very shy about doing anything much on my Linux computer. You inspire me.

Hee. I am ridiculously pleased with myself. It helps that there are some great help pages out there specifically for people who have my computer. Mass markets have their advantages! But it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought, and I definitely recommend being brave :D

Okay, I'll be brave and... do it. One of these days. Anyway, it would be nice to have VLC on the Linux.

Good for you! You are a champion!

I haven't successfully done that, and I've had mine for a year. (I'm starting to think the EeePC made it deliberately difficult to navigate even for a Linux system.) How did you learn the commands?

*giggle* Thank you!

I think Acer deliberately made it easy, and I found a forum with full instructions. There were also people who encountered the same hiccup that I did, which meant they could get me through that as well. Googling "VLC Acer Aspire One" got me what I needed.

Now all I have to do is work out how to switch desktop icons around and I'm set...

Congratumalations! Hubby is the Linux guy in this house - he loves all that stuff :D

That VLC link seems to just link back to this post so I'm none the wiser, as to WHAT you've installed though so I'm intrigued... Oh a media player! Nice.

Hee. I'm not sure I love it, but it's not quite so scary any more!

Whoops. Glad you managed to find VLC despite the lack of link. It's a brilliant media player, which will play absolutely any file, regardless of format. Even if it's saved as a Word file, if it's actually got media content, VLC will play it.

Google is my friend Yes it does *bounces* and apparently I can set it to do them instead of wearing out my trigger finger like I used to.

Hee. I dithered, but this one was going cheap, so I grabbed it while I could! I had a bit of trouble, but once I figured out *where* I was supposed to type things, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought, and I wouldn't be without my little computer for the world *hugs it*
