Because it is 7.45 in the morning and I just got my first rejection letter.* It's only made slightly better by the fact that I can tell they didn't even read the story :(

I am sorry to hear about the letter. He wasn't ringing the bell about said letter, was he? Did you at least get an exciting package to help make up for the doorbell? He comes so early! Our postie doesn't come until closer to 11. Which is good on days one is home, but minimizes the chances of being here to get things that require knocking.

I'm not making sense. We had someone start up the pavement saws at 8am and I was up stuck on LJ reading until gone two

There was a package that needed to be signed for, so it wasn't just the letter - would have been really miffed if it was. 11am sounds much more civilized - I think our postie comes at that time on weekdays. He's only early at weekends...

I'm actually surprised at how OK I am - I have two more possible places to send the story before I give up. It's a cute little piece, and I like it, so hopefully someone else will :)

Poor you! 7.35am is an ungoldy hour to get up on a Saturday morning... I'm sorry about the rejection - but don't let it get you down. Many authors I know have whole drawers stuffed full of rejection slips - it kind of goes with the territory. Keep trying!

Again I say, 'oh, please!' Sport is dangerous. My sister is just about to have a double knee operation following a skiing accident.

I work in Oxford and regularly hang out in Blackwells and the coffee shop in Borders.
I work just round the corner from Borders, so it's entirely possible! And thanks - I'm determined not to let the letter get me down. The fact that I sent the story at all was a HUGE thing, so I'm actually quite proud of myself :D

An archaeologist and the book trade? I'm a Classicist and a librarian... I've had a bird's eye view of the Ashmolean excavations from the library (which, if you know Oxford, tells you where I work ;)) which has been fun. The drilling that shakes my desk every time they start? Less fun.

Oh yes. Or who think traffic lights don't apply to them. Of course, when I'm a cyclist, I hate buses, cars and pedestrians. When I'm a pedestrian, I hate buses, bikes and cars. When I'm driving, I hate buses, bikes and pedestrians. When I'm on a bus- well, you get the idea ;) I like to be fair-minded about these things...

Not really, no. Unless you count 'cook' as 'throw it in the oven and heat it up'.

To be one of the engineers who'd work on the ships that will take us to Mars. Well, I'm an engineer, so it's a start . . .

I'd like to be able to draw. I sort-of can, but I don't have the time to pursue it. I'd rather write.
