You know, when I read fanficrants, I usually assume that they're picking out the worst of the badfic, and that it's not representative of the whole. In the Criminal Minds section, I think they're hard-pressed to choose. Seriously, who warns for "OOCness"? Not that I don't appreciate it, but...

*runs back to LJ*

I'm still completely knackered and have had enough of this now, thank you so much. But I have still been awesome today. The sign on our entrance gate broke, so I made a new one with pictures on, on the basis that our readers have constant difficulty with the swipe system and weren't reading the words, so maybe a picture will be more successful. Oh, and I helped [livejournal.com profile] miss_zedem to get her journal looking something like she wanted and I have a small pink pig sitting on my desk. The last doesn't make me awesome, but it does make me happy.

In sadder news, my MP3 player is really starting to struggle. The battery has been floundering for a while but that's replaceable. What's more worrying is that when I was listening to it earlier on, it kept cutting out, then gave me the message 'playback error' and died. I love my MP3 player! *clings* Because as much as I would love something new, shiny and funky, this one has served me well AND has a radio on it. Expect much wailing and gnashing of teeth when it finally conks out.

Speaking of which: CAR DRIVERS! Always check your side mirror when opening your car door. There could be a cyclist coming past and he could be my husband! He's fine, but his jacket and bike and elbow (how do you get a huge scrape THROUGH a leather jacket and a jumper?) are in bad shape :( We're definitely going to have to replace his cycle helmet, since it's now taken one too many knocks. And he wonders why I don't want to cycle in Oxford. If the buses don't get you, the cars do. And if they don't, a pedestrian will!

I've not managed to contribute much to the Gen battle, but am still disappointed that it's only up to 3 pages. I also think I'm coming down with a cold, so maybe I'll get something written while curled up under a blanket tonight.

All in all, while I still claim the right to be awesome, I'm also pretty grumpy right now. But do you know what's been cheering me up? Opening my inbox to a whole load of comments that begin "I am awesome because..." It's the best kind of high, so come on, people, cheer me up!

How are you awesome today?

Seriously, who warns for "OOCness"?

In Harry Potter fandom, it's fairly common to write stories where character(s) are OOC from the book-- there are various characters who have various fanon characterisations that are different than canon (This is espeically common in Slytherins, because JKR had a very one-dimensional good/bad thing going on. [And the discussion of that is for another post]).

So there's multiple different Dracos-- Draco the black leather trousers wearing sex god of Slytherin, Draco the Ice Prince, Draco the secretly on the side of Light (I rather liked this characterisation-- it made for a much more complex character. Too bad the seventh book did away with it.), Draco the evil dark evil evil evil, Draco the extremely witty and clever and hardly-to-no evil (more common when the canon was much shorter. This Draco is usually paired up with Hermione or Ginny and I think goes well with either.), blah blah blah. There are more but I thought you might be tired of reading by now. And all of these are OOC. And yet all of them can give rise to really interesting stories. I've got a really amusing WittyDraco story I'm meaning to rec (whenever I get around to my continuation of the happy fuzzy rec post from the other day) and I'll rec it as OOC but hysterical.

I don't know, maybe OOC is less useful in other fandoms? But it is certainly a useful thing in HP.

My awesome for today is still doing things despite a headache of evil proportions. And yay on your awesome for today! And yay for pink ping!

Huh, that's interesting. I think it baffles me becuase...well. How is it still the same character, if he's out of character? I can see people exploring what would happen if you took Draco and gave him different experiences/attitudes, but isn't he still the same character? I don't know - I understand why it's a useful label, but the idea still doesn't sit right in my head, somehow.

Ouch - hope the head is better today, and yay for getting things done!

Glad hubby is okay.

As for OOCness I don't get it either. Which is why I always worry about it when I'm writing.

Where's the Gen Battle posted. I might be able to come up with a quick something. Provided it's still going of course.

I am made of awsome today, because I learned something new. I had no idea that RTD borrowed the word Sycorax from the Bard. And now I do. Oh and I didn't kill my second assistant at work. Or call the boss on his day off to tell him why I wanted to kill the second assistant.

The gen battle is here (http://fox1013.livejournal.com/1606070.html). It doesn't finish until the 28th, so you've got loads of time!

*g* Sounds like you had quite the day of it! I actually knew that Sycorax was Shakespearean (I studied the Tempest at school) but hadn't put 2 and 2 together. Neat :)

I was awesome because I actually *posted* something to the Gen Battle. Yup, little old slashy, shippy me contributed genfic!

Unfortunately I know too well how your hub feels - drivers in the hospital seem to make a point of trying to knock me off. As I can break the hospital speed limit if I pedal fast enough (it's 15mph) they don't always get away with it!
