I just tried to use my mobile phone as a mouse for my computer.

Disappointingly, nothing happened apart from it beeping at me.

Welcome to Monday.

ETA: People who write 'idiot's guides' to geeky stuff (linux, CSS etc). You are not dim enough to do this. Seriously. You think you're speaking English, but you're still speaking Geek. You have to realise that when you try to make something better for idiots, all the world does is build a better idiot. At the moment, that idiot is me.

(Before anyone jumps in to help me, I'm in the process of sorting it out, thanks. I'm just increasingly frustrated by people not explaining the very basic principles ("this is what CSS does" "this is what you are doing when you type into a Terminal box") before launching into their how-to guides. Grrrr!)

I once packed my remote control instead of my mobile for my bag for work. Believe me, remotes don't take calls. I tried *facepalms*

You know, I was looking at that and wondering what's wrong with that and it took me about 5 minutes to realised what you meant.

See, I CAN use my mobile as a mouse for my computer via bluetooth and have in fact use it quite frequently as sort of a remote control for my old MacMini that didn't come with the Apple Remote thing when I'm in bed and wanted to play a different movie/show on the player and being too lazy to move...

So yeah, that didn't really look wrong to me, to be using a mobile as a mouse. :P

CSS is a foreign language that continues to confound me! I'm sticking with Klingon; it's easier!

I shall see if I have to learn anything uber-geeky to go with the nice new eeepc that I've just treated myself to (in purple, no less) to replace my ancient brick of a laptop with the 4Gb hd.

Ooh, shiny! Is it a Linux one? The version on my Acer is very easy to get to grips with, and the people at the main forum are very good about assuming I know nothing, but I know the HP version is a bit of a pig.

But if you mostly just typing and surfing, you shouldn't have to do anything to it. Have fun!

I sympathize with you mightily in this regard!

Also with the Monday. :)

I once pointed the TV remote at the dog and tried to mute her. I was somewhat surprised when it didn't work.

Yep, it's definitely Monday. *passes the coffee pot*

I have an EeePC! One of the early versions with a 4G hard drive. If you want to install any new software on it, or update any software, or solve any glitches, or get it to recognize your mp3 player, you're going to need to use some Linux. Oh, unless you install the Windows OS, then it should be a snap. :)

The thing is, I'm *good* at technical stuff, once it gets broken down far enough, and I understand the principles of what I'm doing. It's just that people never quite get down far enough for me!

Mondays are overrated.

LOL! Oh, that's brilliant. Shame it doesn't work on people with mobile phones on trains :D

*takes coffee gratefully* I've only got another hour to get through. I just need to keep telling myself that :S

I used to think I was good at technical stuff. I used to be confident and think I was reasonably capable. Going on the Linux forums has been frustrating, because until then I was able to teach myself anything technical I needed to do--usually by figuring it out without instructions, but sometimes with minimal instruction. But I've gone through the "steps" on the forums, or thought I was, and I've never been very successful. I suspect they're assuming, and not spelling out clearly, some basic but necessary things.

I consider myself a geek, and CSS still makes my head spin. I have yet to find a really good guide that explained commands, etc like the HTML tutorials I learned on.

And indeed, it is Monday. *passes more coffee*

Yup it's a linux one. The price difference alone made it worth not getting the Windows one, plus the equivalent windows one runs hotter, uses more system resources and isn't purple.

Basically got the damn thing so I can keep in touch with you lot when I go to Whitby in April, as well as try to keep up with my Big Bang. It's also replacing my Dell Axim pocket PC which has died a death but I wanted something a little bit easier for me to use (ie bigger) though not a full sized laptop.

And did I mention that it is purple? *g*

Mine's a fairly basic 900 and comes with 16Gb of solid state storage. Since I have no intention of downloading masses of music or movies to it, this should be fine, particularly as I have ridiculous numbers of SD cards and USB sticks lying around for extra storage if needs be.

Am feeling a bit nervous about taking the final step into proper geekdom and owning a computer that runs linux but I'm hoping I can manage. In the early 1990s I went from never having used a computer in my life to knowing my way fairly well around DOS and command prompts. By 1998 I had built my first PC. It might take a while for me to get the hang of it, but I suspect I could well become a linux geek...

Oh yes, computer programmers should *never* be allowed to write manuals. Ever. I drove myself nuts yesterday trying to figure out how to perform a function in one of my (Linux) programs, and the manual was no help whatsoever.

Yeah, as cheap and available as external storage space is these days, it's not a big problem to have a small hard drive. And if your main goal is to have a portable computer (not to do graphics on it or vidding or anything fancy) it's a great little computer. I bet you'll warm up to Linux fine. I knew a little bit of DOS once upon a time (a very little) but I didn't have regular access to computers until after college, and by that time Windows 95 was out and all over the place. (My journalism classes used Macs.)

I'm a bit frustrated recently because I've had to wipe my hard drive and restore factory settings twice within a week. What I need to do is get a Linux for Dummies book, dedicate some time, and make myself sit down and learn it. The EeePC is probably not a great one to learn on because it seems to have its own versions of the OS and software (and the manual doesn't even tell you what they are) but I'm sure I could make more progress than I have haphazardly visiting online forums. I just seem to always have other things to do!

In theory, I learned CSS as part of my librarianship course. In practice, it looks nothing like the stuff LJ uses. My brain hurts!

I really needed that coffee, thanks *sips*
