I am stupidly proud of myself right at this moment and just had to share. My little laptop runs a version of Linux called 'linpus lite' which is kind of like Fedora only not quite. Because of this, I've been living with Firefox2, on the basis that installing Firefox3 was big and scary.

Not any more. Oh no. I carefully copied all the codes, changed the root directory and ran the little program that someone wrote to re-install necessary parts of Firefox2 and the result?

Well, right now, the spellchecker is underlining everything as being mis-spelt, but I'm sure that will go off ;)

I no longer have to zoom in to see things in an LJ posting box. It's shiny and new and all exciting because I did it myself!

If I can do this, I can pretty much do anything!

ETA: AND I'd already installed Spotify on it earlier in the evening. I'm all teched up!

I found several sets of instructions, copied them down, crossed my fingers and went for it :) It went a lot faster when I found a geek who actually spoke English!

My main priority for my Acer was VLC so I could watch stuff on the move, but the Firefox has been driving me mad for a while. It was a little nerve-wracking, but there are some really good, clear guides online if you Google enough ;)

At least you can use FF. Everytime I run it on my mac it crashes bloody everything. I miss it :( And to this day I do not know (or, let's be honest, really care) why it does it. Hi there apathy. Meet the other three browsers on my computre now :D

The best basic one is Ten Tweaks for the Acer Aspire One (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/09/05/ten_aspire_one_tips/), which has got things like making recovering disks and installing various programmes. I got the link to the Firefox instructions from it, but it links to here (http://jorge.fbarr.net/2008/08/06/acer-aspire-one-tips-and-tricks/#InstallingFirefox3). He is a true geek (writing his own code, hacks, WoW...) but he also speaks English and gives good instructions.

I haven't found the aspireoneuser.com forum very helpful, mostly because I can't find a search function and it's just too busy, but the links above have most of the stuff I needed.
