jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Random - Kermit Klein)
[personal profile] jadesfire
My brain is kind of full right now, so hopefully this will empty it a little:

#1. I have a Dreamwidth account under the name of jadesfire although I have no intention of moving there full-time just yet. This will remain my main posting journal, until I see what's what – from what I can tell, that's the standard approach of most people on my flist who've got a DW account. Wait and see who jumps first! If fandom migrates, I may end up with a personal journal here and a fannish one there or vice-versa if it doesn't, or maybe some hybrid of the two. I like the way Dreamwidth has been set up, I like the careful way it's been planned and I like the way the people running it are running it. Mostly, I just like to see things as they grow – I'm almost never in on the ground floor of projects, and it's fascinating to watch it evolve.

At Dreamwidth I'm just plain "jadesfire" – if I could drop the numbers here at LJ, I would, so it's nice to have the name I want! One of the big things for me about Dreamwidth is the subscribe/grant access separation. I lurk in an embarrassing number of journals due to general shyness (don't laugh – I'm more shy than you might think!) and at least this way I might actually get to read the interesting things that at the moment I get to too late to comment on.

#2. [livejournal.com profile] bau_bigbang Author sign-ups close tomorrow, although artist ones will be open for some time yet. Do drop in and see what other people are up to and decide if you want to take part. There looks to be a good range of fic, from femslash to gen, and probably lots of casefic if that's your thing.

#3. [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang is still (yes still) recruiting artists. Take a look at last year's contributions here - all kinds of art are encouraged, from the most basic line-drawings to full-on vids, so if you're looking to get into a fest for the first time, this could be your chance!

#4. I've now gone into serious research-mode for my Big Bang, and will be posting to my writing journal about it soon. The usual suspects, who've already had email from me, will end up on that filter, but if anyone else wants to watch me flail, just drop me a comment. Tentatively, I'm writing a Nine, Jack and Rose adventure, involving dragons, battles and magic. Hopefully it'll be fun…

#5. I promised more about the weekend, although to be honest there's not a whole lot to tell
~ I recommend the Macdonald Hotel at Botley Park where we stayed. The staff could not have been friendlier, the room was comfortable as was the bed, and the breakfast is incredible. Not worth the £17.50 that you'd pay if it wasn't included in the room cost, but still. Incredible.
~ The New Forest is always beautiful, even when it's raining and it's covered in mud. We did a lovely walk around the parish boundary of Lyndhurst, past lots of ponies and assorted other animals, and although there were patches that were hard-going due to the depth of the mud, it was still a lovely time.
~ The Oak Inn at Bank, near Lyndhurst does minted lamb shoulder that is quite simply the best I've ever had.
~ Southampton looks great in the sunshine, and a surprising amount of its city wall is still standing. We stuck to them, rather than being lured in by the shops, and had a nice lunch in the sunshine.
~ Holidays are better than being at work. TRUFAX

#6. Writing Supernatural is fun. I'm not sure I want to do that much of it, and the fandom makes me nervous, but there's lots and lots of gen out there for me to plough through, so I'm very happy.

#7. Pretty soon, I need to write SGA again, for the [livejournal.com profile] team_sga fest. I've said I'll write PIRATES! again (yes, I have to format it like that) so I just have to hope my brain is a bit more lively by that point, because right now, I think Port Call stands fairly well on its own. Hummmmm…

#8. I love that there is now a Twitter tag for when Neil Gaiman links to something and therefore crashes the site as over 200,000 people click through: #neilwebfail. This amuses me WAY more than it should :D

#9. I honestly could not love my doctor more. After ten flaily minutes with him, I have a referral, a blood test appointment and good advice on what to do next. Of course, I also still have the tiredness and the twitchy face (getting seriously annoying now…) but at least I also have a rough plan of attack.

wow. at least it looks like you won't need artists for the bau BB :) But if, for some reason, you do need someone, go ahead and let me know.

I've just got back from Eastercon (and, honestly, if you can't afford to go to the US for Writercon, you could probably do a fairly reasonable and cheaper approximation here in the UK - went to a great Tim Powers talk on plotting longer stories the other day) and all my flist seems to be having fits over Dreamwidth. I might get one as a back-up fic journal but am happy to wait until the end of the month when everything opens up. There seems to be one of these "potential LJ migration!" scares once a year - I doubt there'll be much heavy movement and I'm certainly not intending to jump ship any time soon.

[livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang efforts continue apace - I might make it to the draft deadline, I might not (I'm coming to the conclusion that having someone to watch me flail a bit might not be a bad idea in future, now that my beta doesn't have the time to do chat). If I do, I can absolutely guarantee that some poor bugger of an artist out there will hate me.... ;)

I could do with watching other authors flail. Misery loves company, after all ;-).

(although 30k in 10 days sounds astonishing. The fic I've been working on is now ~22k out of approx. 30k, and it's already taken me the best part of a year. I could never do NaNoWriMo. All the more admiration for those who manage it and things like these Big Bangs)
