I'm uploading all my stories to AO3, which is time-consuming but gives me an off-LJ back up that isn't fanfiction.net, which I like. The imported formatting doesn't always come out right the first time, but mostly works okay (or I've found a way to make it work), and I LOVE the collections feature. So far, apart from the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang collections, I've made one for 'Five Things' fics, which I write quite a lot of, and one for drabbles, which is handy.

I also like that you can specifically say "my story doesn't require warnings" or "I chose not to put warnings on here: caveat lector". OTOH, I write a lot of Jack-fic, so I end up checking the "Major character death" box, catching myself and unchecking it. To misquote myself, I don't think it counts when the casualty gets up and walks away.

The last few days have proved just how reliant I am on Jack as a writer. My [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti fic was going nowhere fast until I switched to his POV. It's still proving slippery to pin down, but I'm doing so much better now he's central to the story. Jack Harkness: the little black dress of writers as well as fandoms.

I'm possibly doing too much of this right now, but I'm seriously considering asking the AO3 team to add him as a fandom of his own, because there's so much back-story/alternate story/non-Torchwood and non-Doctor Who fic out there.

ION, I'm also trying to use my Dreamwidth account a little more, without having any plans whatsoever to leave LJ. I figure if I can juggle three email accounts, 2 LJs, a blog and two Twitter feeds, one more journal isn't going to make that much difference. Ah, Firefox plug-ins. Where would I be without you?

[Um, this is flattering myself but stuff turns up in unexpected places so just in case: this post mentions fandom but is really about me, so please no link to [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, thanks.]

I know I've spammed everyone today, and I promise to be quieter tomorow, but with Dreamwidth going into open beta* tonight, I wanted to get this posted.

*BETA=not everything will work. Join the getting_started comm if you're not sure what's a bug and what's working just not in the way you expected

It occurs to me that I haven't actually done anything with my Dreamwidth account since I got it, save importing my entries. To be honest, the closed beta has been a little too buggy for me, with my complete lack of technical know-how. Things I want to do, like changing the style of my journal, don't really work yet, and things like setting up a properly organised place for my fic, I haven't had time for.

Cut because I know there's folk who really don't care although they're missing the Yes, Prime Minister quote. )

I do know I'm biased though, because although my main interaction is here on LJ, it's not necessarily the stuff that's the most personally significant. That would be the postcards I sent a bunch of you from Morocco, or the stuffed animals I get through the post, or the hand-drawn cards, or the care packages, or the flailing email when I'm struggling to write or the favours you do me or the private messages or the arrangements to meet up or the disappointment that we can't or the secret projects we work on to reveal to the world later. They're the things that make the strongest impact on me, and they're not LJ-dependant. LJ facilitates them, but if everything goes dark over here, I still know where a heck of a lot of you live.

Actually, thanks to Google street view? I can see your house from here ;)

My brain is kind of full right now, so hopefully this will empty it a little:

#1. I have a Dreamwidth account under the name of jadesfire although I have no intention of moving there full-time just yet. Read more... )

#2. [livejournal.com profile] bau_bigbang Author sign-ups close tomorrow, although artist ones will be open for some time yet. Do drop in and see what other people are up to and decide if you want to take part. There looks to be a good range of fic, from femslash to gen, and probably lots of casefic if that's your thing.

Come join us!

#3. [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang is still (yes still) recruiting artists. Take a look at last year's contributions here - all kinds of art are encouraged, from the most basic line-drawings to full-on vids, so if you're looking to get into a fest for the first time, this could be your chance!

#4. I've now gone into serious research-mode for my Big Bang, and will be posting to my writing journal about it soon. The usual suspects, who've already had email from me, will end up on that filter, but if anyone else wants to watch me flail, just drop me a comment. Tentatively, I'm writing a Nine, Jack and Rose adventure, involving dragons, battles and magic. Hopefully it'll be fun…

#5. I promised more about the weekend, although to be honest there's not a whole lot to tell Such as it is… )

#6. Writing Supernatural is fun. I'm not sure I want to do that much of it, and the fandom makes me nervous, but there's lots and lots of gen out there for me to plough through, so I'm very happy.

#7. Pretty soon, I need to write SGA again, for the [livejournal.com profile] team_sga fest. I've said I'll write PIRATES! again (yes, I have to format it like that) so I just have to hope my brain is a bit more lively by that point, because right now, I think Port Call stands fairly well on its own. Hummmmm…

#8. I love that there is now a Twitter tag for when Neil Gaiman links to something and therefore crashes the site as over 200,000 people click through: #neilwebfail. This amuses me WAY more than it should :D

#9. I honestly could not love my doctor more. After ten flaily minutes with him, I have a referral, a blood test appointment and good advice on what to do next. Of course, I also still have the tiredness and the twitchy face (getting seriously annoying now…) but at least I also have a rough plan of attack.
