But it's good to know that the *whole* flist isn't in meltdown. I've been kind of alarmed at how devastated people are. It's the kind of thing I understand intellectually, but don't really feel for myself :S

As I said to Becky earlier - in DW I am happy to handwave the plotholes - it is the fandom of my childhood - I am an expert at handwaving the holes in that. But TW is... It was supposed to be a grown up show for grown ups and I wanted it to be perfect - you know? So the holes, and the topics that could have made it onto mainstream televsion and into edges of the general public consciousness and just... *haven't* make it pretty impossible for me to handwave in TW.

My expectations were too high - is that my fault?

I always go into TV shows expecting nothing, or less than nothing, which certainly saves on the disappointement!

At some level Torchwood was *my* baby (because I am not capable of writing a screenplay) OR, if not my baby, then my very favourite nephew (OMG this makes me my sister...) with the promise of it providing even a hint of the stories I could never write - and I'm not talking about the sci-fi but the relationships and issues and stuff that is all mixed up with gender and identity. AND I am not that DEEP - except... It would appear I am about some things, even though I don't give voice to them very often.

Yes, this makes me stupid, I know.

I know but that's exactly where I was coming from when it was first conceived because this was RTD who was not afraid to do stuff...

And seriously, not sad just deflated and cross with myself more than anything. And please, I do not see myself as entitled to anything (I'm not quite ready to join the batshit crazy side of fandom yet, I don't think*). Especially not from a television show.

You're not crazy, and I was trying to sympathise not criticise! I know you're not the 'entitled' type, and the comment was badly phrased - I just meant that I *expect* TV to let me down, so I go in deflated, which makes it easier. I never ask anything of it so am usually pleasantly surprised.

THIS. I just... Everyone warned me about SPN fandom, which is why I never plunged in. I'm now remembering why I carefully withdrew from the main Torchwood fandom as well, because that is some major reality-failures right there.

Nothing could quite live up to the asshattery of spn - there is a youtube clip doing the rounds today with a truly appalling message about how much J2 are in love and there is someone trying to split them up BARF!!!

However back to TW. I left twitter prior to the screening because I could see the way some of my 'friends' were behaving. Thank God I did, that's all I can say.

Someone commented somewhere that it was absolutely fantastic for those who haven't watched the series before. I think that's definitely true.

I didn't hate it like I expected, and actually, what happened in the last episode made Ianto's death more bearable. I don't intend on boycotting anything, and actually, my official 'reaction' was to create a fic community for Children of Earth stories, especially those that fork off from previous days. I'm definitely sad, but I guess now that the show got completely ripped to shreds, I can deal with it better than if everything went back to normal except for Ianto's death...

That's a very good point, actually. *everything* is gone now, *everything* is different, which makes all the horror part of something that is past. It's gone, and the story moves on.

I think for new viewers, it will have worked well. It's people who were heavily invested in Ianto in particular who seem to be the traumatised ones.

Part of the reason that killing off Ianto upset/annoyed me was that I didn't think it was necessary and partly because he just spent the last couple of days building him up and getting us invested in him (the are we a couple thing and then his coming out). It just seemed like a "I'll make you identify and love him and then I'll kick you in the gut by killing him". That said, we're now left with Torchwood: Gwen, and even though I liked her a lot better in S3 (I thought some of her scenes were awesome), I don't really want a Torchwood that focuses on her as the main character give that she was my least favourite character (yes, behind Andy & Rhys...even possibly behind Lois and Ianto's sister).

That said, I'm thinking there probably won't actually be any more, I think RTD has achieved what he wanted and that was to kill off the series...which sucks as it still had so much more to cover.

I think RTD may have managed even more Jack-whumping than you're capable of--that whole series was about ripping him to shreds. It's going to be interesting to see where they take him next.

Fandom is in total, complete, utter meltdown. It's like watching the HP fandom after HBP all over again.

I loved CoE. The ending is desperate, sad and gut wrenching, but so true to who Jack is that I can't see it happening any other way.

And even with that ending, I have no doubts that Jack will be back for Who, and maybe even a new series of TW.

The SUV theft was just silly. I understand the two reasons behind it- they felt they had to show us that Ianto's SIL's family was in a rough neighborhood (so that the following scenes set there and his niece and nephew being taken would make sense) AND that the team wouldn't have access to the SUV on the run. But. The first could have been established by Ianto's own car being stolen and the second by the SUV being destroyed in the explosion.

I agree on the points about the SUV, Ianto's own car would have achieved the same thing and actually made more sense. Would Ianto really take the Torchwood SUV to his Sisters house? I think not! She thinks he's a civil servant and Torchwood has been rapidly becoming less of a secret organisation in Cardiff.

Some one will get quite a shock when they find the body of Janet and anything/one else that was in the vaults and in storage there. In fact, I think the whole thing is a little scary for what could be unleashed on Cardiff (the rift manipulator was in there for a start). I'm not sure that the (unexplored) consequences of destroying the hub was thought through properly.

With regards regrowing Jack...well, I can't help but picture half a dozen Jacks regrowing in the crater *grins* (and yup I am writing a fic based on the idea - it's an attempt to get the damn bunny out of my head so I can finish writing the end of the world for

apocalyptothon ).

I am quite happy with Torchwood as it stands though I have issues with the whole Ianto being so sacred he shouldn't die but that stems from season 2 stuff.

Definitely very good sci-fi tv. Such a pity they couldn't have pulled this level of quality with season 1.

For me it's not that he's so sacred he shouldn't die, but more a case of: Where do you go after getting rid of 80% of your most liked characters. We're left with Gwen for goodness sake (probably the least liked for many fangirls and boys behind Cpt John, PC Andy, Rhys and Myfanwy).

I loved CoE but the fandom scares me! I have this small, sneaking hope that the real crazies will go off and find something else to obsess about but I suspect that may take a while.

I thought it worked brilliantly, both as a Torchwood story (and for all that folks like to say that it was cracky fun, they've always played with the darker themes on TW) and as general drama. For a general audience that doesn't know the show or feel possessive/entitled/whatever, it was damned near perfect. They kept the focus on the human story and they didn't back out on anything, and that is the sort of thing that makes TV drama pack a heavy punch.

I don't doubt that Jack will be back, and back in TW if it gets another series (and with the audience reaction - the 6+ million, that is, not the few hundred grieving fangirls - the BBC would be mad not to go for it). They took the show to a point that opened up possibilities but could be used as an ending if necessary. And, really, a restructure isn't entirely a bad thing. The way I'm looking at it, sending Jack off to get some much-needed breathing space allows Things To Change back home without us having to see the process. For a BBC1 drama audience, five weirdoes in a Cardiff basement doesn't quite seem to cut it, but now they've introduced the characters to give us a political/quasi-military SF drama with a human side. Jack can come back in a year or so to find a rebuilt Hub and a completely restructured organisation that he has to redefine his place within even as they face whatever threat comes down the line. And damn but that's a show I want to see! :D

RTD has announced he's leaving for America. I think this was probably done on purpose, but usually when you move home you don't burn your old one down (just in case you need to come back to it) in order to stop someone else attempting to live in it. *sighs* I'm not happy with what happened but I'm not some loony toon who thinks that by campaigning we can get them to hit the reset button (I'll just use my fic to fix it).

I think you're right about the crazies, but the idea of them bombarding the BBC with bags of coffee just cracks me right up. RTD won't even be there, he's not gonna give a crap about it. And the BBC spokeswoman has said that they've not yet commissioned a fourth series until they've finished reviewing the viewing figures. I guess what bugs me is that they seem to be cutting all the decent drama/sci-fi stuff and yet the drivel that has run perpetually for the last 15-20 years still continues to air practically ever damn day of the week. But, yeah, I think we have to admit to ourselves that it's probably the end of TW as a TV series (the tie-in novels may well continue though).

I've been avoiding my flist for the past couple of days in order to avoid the meltdown. I won't say I'm not disappointed, in a way, but I can understand why they did the series that way. It was an excellent drama series. But to me, it didn't feel like Torchwood.
