Three Torchwood drabbles

For [livejournal.com profile] aeshna_uk: Torchwood; Jack; Thunder

"You're crazy!"

Jack grinned. "So?"

Grimacing, Gwen huddled further into her coat. "It's blowing a gale out here."

"How else would it fly?" At the other end of a long wire, the kite swooped as it fought the air currents. "Worked for Ben Franklin."

"You'll be electrocuted!" Gwen sighed, then shook her head. "Never mind."

Another lightning bolt split the sky, making Jack whoop. As the rain came down, Gwen left him there, laughing like a school-boy as his kite dipped and spun. They didn't get many storms in Cardiff; trust Jack to find a way to make it fun.

Pre-series, references to Fragments

Divorce and moving were supposed to be the two most stressful things a person could do. Owen wasn't going to get the chance to know about the former any time soon, and the latter wasn't turning out so difficult after all.

Then again, all he was taking to Cardiff was a photo album and a suitcase of clothes. He'd never been much for ornaments, and could always get new furniture. He didn't want- No. He didn't need to take anything else with him. It wasn't like anywhere was going to be home, now.

At least it made the packing easier.

For [livejournal.com profile] taffimai: Torchwood; Jack; Aerobics

"Owen!"

"I did say not to go in, Gwen."

Tosh carefully kept her eyes on her monitor, pretending that one of her colleagues hadn't just let another walk in on two others...er...at an unfortunate moment.

"Seriously, they need a sign for that door or something."

Owen snorted. "What? 'Horizontal aerobics in progress, enter at own risk'?"

There was a sound very much like a slap, and Tosh smiled to herself, still typing. A second later, the printer whirred into life behind her. Because actually, that wasn't such a bad idea.

And two SGA ficlets, since apparently I cannot drabble SGA anymore.

For Genie: SGA; Sheppard; Lightsaber
Set during The Return

More than anything else, Sheppard is bored on Earth. He's sure there are exciting planets out there in the Milky Way, but most of the places he's visited have been either uninhabited or uninhabitable. Even when he's not out on a mission, Colarado Springs is no Atlantis, and if there's part of the base he's never seen, it's because he's not allowed in it.

He'd seriously consider trying to get in there if it wasn't for the whole Court Martial thing.

Rodney's not much given to sending mail, but Sheppard has to guess that Area 52 is as boring as the SGC, because there's a parcel waiting on his desk first thing Tuesday morning. Stuck on the back, over one of the joins in the brown paper is a sticker saying Gravity is a myth, the Earth sucks, and Sheppard manages half a smile as he tears it off.

Aw man. He's been pestering Rodney for one of these for years. He knew it wasn't impossible, although judging from the blobby welding along the bottom, it wasn't that easy either. It's probably not a good plan to play with it in his office, but he lets himself flick the switch briefly, and seriously even the noise is right, a gentle thrumming that makes Sheppard feel ten again, when he was going to be as good a pilot as Luke Skywalker and maybe save the galaxy now and again. Funny how things work out.

Grinning, Sheppard has a moment's dilemma before deciding to put the lightsaber away rather than hanging it from his belt. Not because it might get him in trouble, but because he has a feeling if General O'Neill sees it, Rodney's going to have to start taking orders. It's only as he picks up the box to drop it in the trash that he notices the note in the bottom.

Mine's red. See you in three weeks. Prepare to meet your doom.

For Morgenleri: SGA; Evan Lorne; Roses

Teyla watched the last of them come into the gateroom, then she nodded to Lorne.

"I believe we are ready, Major."

"Right." His face grave, Lorne touched the crystal that opened the radio link to the Daedalus. "Colonel Cauldwell, we're ready down here."

"Ready, Major."

A high whistle filled the Gateroom and there was the snap of thirty people coming to attention at the same time. Teyla followed Lorne to the window, looking down to the floor below. As they watched, there was a flash of light, and the twelve body bags disappeared up to the Daedalus.

"On Earth," Lorne said, in the silence that followed, "we might have put flowers on them."

"Flowers?" Frowning, Teyla looked up at him. "I thought you gave flowers as a celebration gift."

"We do. Different flowers."

"I do not understand."

Turning away from the window, Lorne nodded for the control room personnel to stand down, then stuck his hands in his pockets. "Where I'm from on Earth, we put flowers on the graves of the dead. Like, I don't know, a gift or something like that, to say we remember them."

Understanding a little, Teyla nodded. "It is important that they are remembered. Among my people, their names are incorporated into our songs. Then we can take them with us, even when they are lost."

"That makes sense." Lorne slowly led the way towards the stairs, his hands still deep in his pockets. "At my great aunt's funeral, someone brought a huge wreath of red roses. Almost caused a fight at the graveside." Seeing her puzzlement, he added with a wry smile, "They weren't from my great uncle, and on Earth, roses are..." He broke off, twisting his mouth a little before going on, "Roses are a lover's gift."

Understanding, Teyla nodded. "It was similar when Brejar's youngest nephew forgot the name of his great-great grandmother's second husband in her service of memory. The embarrassment was so severe that his parents barely came out of their tent for a month."

"Yeah, that sounds about the same." Lorne gave a her a sidelong look. "You know, they grow something an awful lot like roses down in botany."

"Really?" Teyla smiled. "Then I shall bear in mind what you have said should anyone offer me a bouquet of them."

"You do that." As they reached the bottom of the stairs, Lorne looked down the corridor towards the Gateroom. Teyla could not see his face, but she had seen John with that same, tight-shouldered posture, and she knew what he was thinking. When he spoke, his voice was laced with bitterness, so sharp that it surprised her. "We send lillies for funerals, though. Maybe I should see if botany could grow them too."

Knowing that no good could come of that train of thought, Teyla put a hand on his arm, drawing his attention back to her. "Or maybe it would be better not to."

He met her eyes for a long moment, and she tried not to look past him to where the orderlies were still clearing the last of the trolleys.

"Maybe you're right," he said eventually, not turning around. "Probably asking for trouble."

Since there was nothing she could say to that, Teyla slipped her arm through his and gently turned him towards the Mess. There would be time enough to toast their dead and sing their names later. For now, Lorne needed to be returned to the living. "So tell me, Major," she said with calculated nonchalance, "what would be an appropriate response in your culture if anyone were to send me a bouquet of roses?"

He grinned. "Well, for starters, don't tell Colonel Sheppard, unless you want to get them KP for the rest of their tour..."

Oh... oh, John. You big, lovable DORK! ♥♥♥

Lovely, cute little piece. I love Rodney's little notes, especially the last one where he lets his inner-Sith come out and play XD I'm sneaking in a peek here at work, so I'll have to catch up with the other ones later.

Squee! *hugs you* Lorne and Teyla were just perfect. And I love that last exchange...

Heh, I never say never on follow ups, but I've written Teyla and Lorne together twice now, so I don't seem to be able to write him without her!

Thanks!

Eee! Lightsaber duel alert! Of course Rodney can make a lightsaber and of course he'll be practicing (with a hologram that I'm sure he designed in his spare time) for the duel.

I have a complete soft spot for Lorne/Teyla and that little scene fits in it so nicely.

And the SGA snippets are great, especially the Lorne & Teyla discussing flowers. I love the little bit of cross-cultural discussion.

I'm so, so late here. Believe it or not I've had this post open in my tabs ever since it went up.

"You'll be electrocuted!" Gwen sighed, then shook her head. "Never mind."

Aw, that's both sad and funny. :)

'Horizontal aerobics in progress, enter at own risk'

Snort. And Jack wouldn't let Ianto take it down, I bet! I like the Tosh POV in that drabble.

SGA Lightsaber ficlet - SQUEE. I heart this so much. And Rodney totally would do that with his time, partly in protest of his assignment and partly because he *can*.

The Roses ficlet is really lovely. A natural, kind conversation.
