I have just successfully crocheted a long row of chain stitches for the first time ever. It's in horrible brown acrylic, the tension is all over the place and it's one of the ugliest things ever done to wool by a human being, but damn if I'm not proud of it.

Early indications are that my crocheting is going to be looser than my knitting, although not by much, and that I'm going to need cutting out of it at least once in the not too distant future.

But still.

Crochet! \o/

*grin* As soon as I figure out what "2 chains for turning" means, that is. Single and double I've got! Woo hoo!

That means chain two every time you turn your work around so your corners stay neat and cornery.

Squee!
I can see you doing amigurumi in the not-too-distant future. I have a cthulhu pattern somewhere...

Hee! Thank you :) I have a panda on my list for sure!

Although I think I should probably master non-holey squares first!

ETA: Nope, apparently holes aren't an issue. Crocheting so tightly I can't get the hook back in, THAT'S going to be an issue :S

Yay! That's exciting. It's so good sometimes to have something to do with your hands. Go you!

After my holiday knitting projects are finished, I was thinking about trying crochet again. There are so many cute toy patterns that require one to crochet. Maybe we can learn together! Terry got me started enough to make a little bear, but the poor thing was *not* good looking. I had holes all over the place.

I've been saving amigurumi patterns since long before I knew what "chain" meant. I'm sure I'll never be able to make them all!

YAY CROCHET!

I was just last night thinking about that fic-in-progress. YOU KNOW WHICH ONE I MEAN. :)

I WAS THINKING THAT TOO! Especially when it didn't work the first time and I wanted to put it down and give up ;)

I'm finding the whole 'one hook' thing way less confusing than I did two! It's going okay, and I've only tied one knot in the yarn so far ;)

Crocheting is such fun and it's easy to get a knack for it. And it works up much faster than knitting.

I used to crochet all the time, then got away from it when I no longer had a need to turn out little blankets, caps and sweaters for friends' new babies. But I took it up again last winter and crocheted myself a beret. It took only a couple of nights while watching television to do it.

It's hard on the fingers of my left hand, but I'm sure they'll toughen up!

I think making things is definitely why I want to crochet. I love cross-stitch, but I also want to be able to do something useful as well as decorative!

Yay for creating something! Crocheting still makes me cry. I can do the first chain - it's anything after that which messes with me.

I'm doing okay so far, but there are some excellent tutorials on YouTube that I had to dip into when I got stuck (I recommend theknitwitch if you fancy having another go)

I shall report back when I've managed to make something other than wonky squares!

I am in awe. I can crochet a decent chain (have been able to since I was a kid and my gran taught me to do 'finger knitting', i.e. without a hook at all) but anything other than that, I just can't get round my head round using only one hook instead of two needles. :-(

One day, I might conquer it, but for the moment I'll stick to knitting!

Me too. That and where I'm supposed to stick the hook. There seem to be so many options of places to put it, and the instructions are confounding. Knitting seems so much more straightforward. I feel like I'm going to have to retrain my brain in order to do it, but maybe it's like learning a second or third language. The more you do it, the more flexible your brain gets. I'm hoping anyway...

I think it's whatever you happen to learn first. I can't get the hang of knitting at all. And it goes so slowly!

That said, my crochet goes slowly too. But that's 'cause I don't get off the darn computer and pick up a needle...*looks guiltily at all the projects that haven't got finished yet*

*g* I'm safer with a blunt hook than two (or more!) sharp needles, I think. I wasn't interested in learning when I was little, so it's fun to sit down now, even if I have a long way to go until I can manage anything more complicated than squares!

Yay! Ooh, by the way, are you aware that American and British names for stitches are different? I won't confuse you by explaining it yet, but when you move on to patterns it's worth knowing the difference.

Hee, L mentioned it this morning, and I'd already noticed it from using a British book and an American YouTube tutorial.

My next problem is turning - the sides of my squares are distinctly wibbly at the moment! Something I might ask for help with on Wednesday :)
