A year in Fic: 2009
Jan. 12th, 2010 05:18 pmBefore I go any further, I just want to say that I HAVEN'T SEEN THE DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL. I love you all for being so non-spoilery still. It's much appreciated, believe me.
Moving swiftly on…
One of my new year's resolutions last year was to write less fic. While that sounds odd, it was essential for my sanity, I think. Large chunks of 2008 that should have been taken up with life were taken up with writing, and I needed a break from that. Having taken a break, I'm finding that my brain is itching to start writing again, but I'm woefully out of practice. So while this list is what I wrote in 2009, I have another one with what I want to write in 2010. It's not exhaustive, but I also don't think I will get to everything here. Some will die a natural death, others will require more skill than I can bring to bear at this moment in time. I'll need to get back in practice to do them justice. The plan right now is for one a month, which feels achievable. I'll be signing up for
tardis_bigbang, of course, and am seriously considering
au_bigbang for something completely different – maybe that epic in the Port Call universe that I never got around to writing…

That's 42 fics, totalling about 50,680 words in 8 fandoms. Which sounds like an average of just over 1000 words per story, but over half of that word count is a Big Bang. The shiny new fandom this year was Supernatural, and I rekindled my Criminal Minds love. Still, I haven't actually written successfully since early November, and I feel further out of fandom than I ever did. Because my brain is contrary like that, I actually think that's a good thing for my writing, as I'm going through a really bad 'everyone else is better than me' phase, and being outside things stops the horrific comparison obsession that I tend to get.
One thing that's quite striking about the list is how much I wrote to prompts or for exchanges or similar. Not that I don't love you guys, but I think one thing I need to learn in 2010 is how to write for myself. Actually, doing stuff for me is definitely going to be a running theme in my New Year's Resolutions, but that's another post.
2009 seems to have been the year of the drabble. I'm kind of looking forward to finding out what this year will be.
