Thinking and doing.
Jan. 14th, 2010 01:42 pmToday is More Joy Day, but since I don't have the time/resources to offer drabbles like I usually do, let me send you out there for good things instead.
help_haiti is a fannish community auctioning off stuff to raise money for Haiti. Send your money to your preferred relief organisation and receive something in return. Because I am a sheep, I've put two posts up:
Crocheted things. Toys, scarf, hat, blanket, whatever you want (within reason!)
Story!. At least 1500 words. You request, I write.
And because my geekdom knows no bounds, I went through the "Something Interesting" offers and made up a spreadsheet for them, which I'm keeping up to date. Please could someone click this link for me and let me know if it works? The fanfic post now has 19 pages, so if you want it, you can probably have it, but I'm not brave enough to try to index that!
Full details about the charities and the auctions can be found at the comm.
If that isn't your thing, and just in case you haven't seen the gazillion posts
In the US, donate $10 to the American Red Cross by texting HAITI to 90999.
My own charity of choice is Medicins sans Frontiers who are already there and working.
Here in the UK, there's also the Disasters Emergency Committee which coordinates aid to various agencies, and OXFAM, who will also be in there for the long-haul, along with lots and lots of others.
The above makes me sound mature and organised. To a certain extent this is true. Yesterday, I was the most senior person in the library for a whole 3 hours, and I didn't break anything. I spend tens of thousands of pounds of the library's money and have access to the accounting software. I had a meeting this morning with sales reps from book companies and actually knew what I was talking about.
Fortunately, before I could get too carried away with my new-found maturity, I looked down to find I have toothpaste on my trousers.
IDEK.
Other things I will be doing today, will be watching things go up at
festivids. Vids are still something I find strange and mysterious, so I'm looking forward to exploring some new stuff.
I also want to put together a post of some of the crochet things I've made recently, since I'm actually getting the hang of it at last, and it's so much fun!
How are y'all doing? Holding it together out there? I'm hanging on for the weekend, personally, although sadly that's because I have a desperate urge to tidy/sort/clean our flat. Maybe this maturity thing is getting to me after all...

Date: 2010-01-14 04:10 pm (UTC)Gah, cannot look more at help_haiti now or I will never get back to work. I want to offer a knitted item but I'm pretty sure I couldn't finish anything good by the 14th, since I have another knitting deadline on Groundhog day. :(

Date: 2010-01-15 10:14 am (UTC)It's sensible not to commit yourself if you know you can't make it. I'm just trying not have a minor freak-out that people actually bid on me. Eep!

Date: 2010-01-15 03:28 am (UTC)I saw your crocheted animals offer and had a brief but epic fantasy of bidding on you and asking for a small army of little octopi toys. I'm not sure what I would do with them, other than have them slowly creep over floors/tables and it would generally be awesome.
I'm in an oddly good mood given that I'm about six hours behind on my to do list for today (at this point I've mostly given up and decided that that can get bumped to the weekend, clearly).

Date: 2010-01-15 10:15 am (UTC)Go on. Haven't you always wanted your own army? ;)

Date: 2010-01-15 06:07 pm (UTC)*gah* Fine, yes, I bid! *glares at you* People aren't supposed to encourage my world-domination** tendancies because then I might act on them! Think on this the first time that you have to bow down to your crocheted octopus ruler: this is partially your fault
**fine, in this case: table and/or bits of the floor domination, but my point still stands!
:) *twirls*
