So, did anyone else start the week by trying to kill themselves by smoke inhalation? No? Pbbbbbbt, guys, try to keep up.

Okay, so what really happened is that instead of turning on the hob under my porridge, I turned on the hob under my electronic scales. Normally, I turn on the hob and go away to get dressed, since my porridge is then done by the time I get back. This morning, since the flat was cold, I decided to get dressed in the living room where the heater is. That turned out to be a good decision, because when the scales started to make popping noises, I was right there.

Of course, an even better idea would have been to not melt them in the first place, but hey, you can't have everything.

We're both fine, although I'm a little nauseious from the fumes. Luckily, since I'm married to a chemist, he looked at the glass top of our cooker and said "I'll get a solvent from the lab to get that off." He has his uses ;)

ION, apparently crocheted toys are desirable items, since there's a small bidding war going on over at my [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti thread. Slightly more nerver-wrackingly, the bidding for my writing also went up over the weekend. *gulp*

The bidding currently stands at $15 for a blanket/shawl or hat/scarf/mitten set, and an incredible $35 for a crocheted toy set. Both auctions are here.

For my writing, the current price is $20, and the thread is here.

I'm having photo issues, since I'm not used to Flickr yet, but I'll upload some examples of my work as soon as I beat it into submission.

I suppose I should probably do some work before that, though. Hope y'all had a good weekend and good luck with your Mondays!

The bidding is scary, isn't it? I'm amazed people think my babbling is worth more than a Dollar...

I've been staggered by the fannish response. So much money is being raised in $1-$10 increments, and it's adding up quickly!

did anyone else start the week by trying to kill themselves by smoke inhalation?

Not specifically but I keep doing something simialr myself. we have an electric hob (which i hate with a passion) I randomly occasionally turn on the wrong hob and scorch more of the pictures off my hob covers (which stinks)

OOh you on flikr.. I am Carlotta_von_uberwald..:)

Non-gas hobs are such a pain, aren't they? I can never remember that they're on, and once left a tea towel on one long enough that it actually combusted :S The smell of my scales is definitely going to be with us for a while.

I only use flickr for my knitting pics, I'm afraid, and only then because it's compatible with Ravelry's software. I'm aware that it can be a community, but wouldn't even know where to start!

[identity profile] crashbarrier.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That's okay I only use flickr for my arty about town photo's:)

Well, I haven't managed to do anything that daft yet today, but give me time...

I haven't been paying attention to the auction - things like that make me uncomfortable for reasons too numerous and boring to go into here - but yay for people fighting over you! Good to see your awesomeness being recognised :)

My weekend was good, although I've hit a 'I suck' wall with my fic-writing. I have until mid-week to stop being rubbish, although if I want you or anyone else to beta, realistically I have until tomorrow /o\ Perhaps a shower will help...

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my New Year Resolutions was to tackle some of my self-esteem issues head on instead of sidling around them. It hurts like hell, and it's still a work in progress, but I keep telling myself it's good for me. The auction is definitely part of the process, but I'm still trying to work out which part!

Oh hon *hugs you* Seriously, the story is GOOD, and worth chasing. You're one of the few people I know who can do properly sweet and punchy without tripping into saccharine and emo. *makes encouraging noises* I'm around until 2.30ish, then here on and off from then. Let me know if you need me!

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I did not do that. But Christmas Day 2008 I accidentally turned the wrong ring on on my mother's electric hob and broke every single plate (9 in total) that we were due to eat our dinner off.

Luckily that was also the year I had asked my family to buy ME a new dinner service for our house so all my new plates got used instead (I had to have them brought over then unwrap them and wash them before we could eat).

Can't he bring something home to get rid of the smell as well?

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ouch, but at least you had back-up! I did manage to make a tea towel burst into flames on a solid hob once. Apparently they combust if they get hot enough - who knew? ;)

Hopefully lots of fresh air and some odour neutraliser should do the trick with the smell. Otherwise, I'll be looking for some old wives' remedies - they usually work :)

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's lucky we did have back-up or we would have been eating of tea plates, serving dishes and possibly saucers.

Cut onion on a saucer seems to work with paint. Though, of course, then you have to find something to get rid of the smell of onion.

If you need any assistance with Flickr, feel free to ask... Given that I've got over 30,000 photos up there now, I think I've got a reasonable handle on how it works!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
*boggles* That's quite the picture collection! Thanks - the offer is greatly appreciated :)

I was really wondering if there's any way to post pictures from there to here, so that I can have multiple photos in one LJ-post. I can see how to post directly using the Flickr client, but really wanted to put a few pictures in.

I can use LJ's own photo manager, or photobucket, but since they're already in Flickr (since that's what Ravelry talks to), I was hoping not to have to reload them elsewhere.

Thanks!

I'm so glad the fire wasn't worse. That's actually how I lost my last purse.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Eep! That doesn't sound good. I've melted stuff before but seeing smoke billow out of my scales is an image that's going to linger!

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I was standing right at the stove but I'd knocked the burner on to 'high'. I was lucky in that I didn't lose anything in the purse except for a Shiseido compact (though my library card is a bit warped), but the purse was a total loss and I loved that little workhorse of a purse. I paid something like $2 for it but the basic construction was really sound and it would have lasted me several more years. Also it was highly conducive to being covered with buttons/badges and it was a great conversation starter.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
GAH! I am SO glad you and J are okay!!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. That was definitely closer than I'm comfortable with!

[identity profile] blackmare-9.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow. That's the kind of thing I would do, with the scales.

Also, I learned a new UK English term just now. I'd never heard "hob" before; in the U.S. that's a burner.

For LJ purposes I just upload photos directly to my journal. Have you tried that?

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh that's interesting. Is it a burner even if there are no flames? Ours are halogen rings under a reinforcced glass top so they glow but there's no flame

Normally I use photobucket or lj but since these are already in flickr, I'm hoping to cut corners. That almost never works but there's no harm in asking ;-)

[identity profile] crystalshard.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
See, this is why you need coffee in the mornings. I hope you're feeling better, hon. *hugs*

I'm so glad that people are bidding for your crochet and writing skills. You're more than worth it, and the people it's going to are worth it.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Coffee, a brain, something like that... Am fine now, thanks although I might stick to toast for a few days!

Thanks, hon. I'm chuffed to bits and mildly terrified all at the same time!

[identity profile] crystalshard.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just stage fright. Once you get to actually making the goodies, you'll be fine. *grin*

By the way, have you seen my new car? I'm a little bit in love with it.

Oh, and tinypic is a very good free image host. It's what I'm using at the moment, since photobucket tends to run out of bandwidth at a moment's notice.

Smoke inhalation does not sound good at all! I hope you are rid of the smell now. And the, uh. Mess. Poor electronic scales.
