I'm feeling distinctly picked-on here. The plan had been to use my coach journeys to get some writing done, but on the way out, there were two guys at the back of the bus talking at the tops of their voices. While it was an interesting study in how swearing can become a form of verbal punctuation, I finally decided it was a bad idea to turn and glare at them when I heard one of them say "I really need to get to the doctor to get more meds". You know. Just in case.

Now, there is someone speaking what I think is either Romanian or Hungarian so loudly that I can hear him over my iPod, which is also turned up louder than I usually have it. I wish I was less English or that I'd chosen a better seat to glare at him from. Just to add insult to injury, I managed to run the 300 metres or so for the bus and make it, which was quite the achievement. While I was fumbling for my ticket and feeling quietly pleased with myself that I hadn't passed out or thrown up (maybe I'm fitter than I think), the driver said that I clearly needed more practice. This from a man sitting behind the wheel of a large, motorised vehicle. Yeah. Thanks for that.

*sigh*

However, I am determined not to be deterred. I have Rusty's magic writing mix* and a laptop and I'm not afraid to use them.

*turns up bon jovi*

*It's a Torchwood mix from a few years ago and it's yet to let me down. I'm starting to save it for emergencies in case it wears off, but I think this definitely counts.

Sometimes earplugs or earbuds are just not enough. I'm starting to think the noise-canceling earmuff style headphones my dad has are a good idea for venturing into public! If they weren't too expensive to consider *taking* in public...

Good for you for keeping at it anyway! (And for making it to the bus.)

He's finally shut up and I have 300 words written, so I'm counting it a win all round \o/

Noise cancelling headphones are very tempting, but given my ability to lose them (high) and break them (even higher), I'm thinking I can't really afford them! It would be nice though.

300 words is great! \o/ Especially in challenging conditions.

given my ability to lose them (high) and break them (even higher)

That's what I'm afraid of too. Last time I needed earphones, I got three pairs for a penny each (plus shipping for the lot) on Amazon, and if I lose them or they wear out or get chewed by a cat (also high probability for me), it's no stress. This is also why I'd be nervous getting a nice iPod or something! I'd be sure to drop it in a puddle.

You have all my sympathies. Maybe you can write a scene in which you get your revenge . . . drop a small meteor on them or something.

Are we going to see fic with aliens on buses masquerading as Eastern Europeans? You know, being deaf has its advantages sometimes.

Once the headphones are in and the volume is high enough for me to hear the music, there ain't going to be no shouty people distracting me as I can't hear them! My lovely Senheiser (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-CX-300-II-Precision-Noise-Isolating/dp/B001EZYMTK/ref=dp_cp_ob_ce_title_2) ear buds have a good noise-reducing effect as do the much cheaper Creative (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-EP-630-Noise-Isolating-Earphones/dp/B0009G6FQI/ref=br_lf_m_1000370123_1_1_ttl?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&pf_rd_p=114032367&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000370123&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1WQCDQSWXHS1MBCWW37P) ones. This style of headphone has given me back my ability to listen to music on the go - any phone that doesn't go *in* my ear canal, with a fairly good seal is virtually useless as all the sound bleeds away from where it needs to be.

And if it looks like there's anything odd going on the earphones come out and the hearing aids go back in, just to make sure I don't miss anything. I hate coach travel, gimme a nice train any day.

*grin* He shut up eventually, and it probably wouldn't have been so bad if my headphones didn't have a loose connection!

Having run for more than a few buses: go you!

My bus ride isn't long enough for me to have time to do anything other than survive it. So if I have to turn the music up, so be it.

I was remarkably proud of myself :D

I normally crochet on the bus to work if I'm not drinking coffee, but the bus to London and back usually gives me time to get other things done. Usually...
