Don't you just want to thwap authors with a hefty copy of a dictionary when they do stuff like that? There should be some sort of requirement that academic writing not be so dense you have to wade through it.

It's in "The Journal of the History of ideas" which is mostly philosophy and semiotics, but really, there's no excuse for this. They don't seem to realise that being obscure shows that they are annoying, not that they're clever.
