This is a Gen-specific rec list. [livejournal.com profile] crack_van is a great place to start if you're looking for the slash or ship stuff, but there's not much Gen on it. There's no that much Gen in the fandom full-stop, to be honest, so if you come across something you think I might like, please drop me a comment here with the link. My main requirement in a story is that it makes me go 'oh', nothing more, nothing less.

I'm trying to be selective about what I rec, as I don't want this to end up miles and miles and miles long. On the other hand, if there's that much good fic, I can live with a miles long list!

Just remember: No Oh, No Rec.

Jadesfire reserves the right to be petty, inconsistent and arbitrary about what stories she likes in this or any fandom. Usual disclaimers apply. :P

Spoilers for L.D.S.K. Hotch deals with the aftermath of LDSK as well as what's to come in the future. I absolutely adore LDSK for reasons I can't put my finger on, and this fic spins such a good possible back-story for Hotch that I couldn't resist.

Meetings by [livejournal.com profile] batgurl88
Spencer has a strange encounter. A fun little ficlet taking a throwaway comment in canon and following up on it. Not my usual kind of thing, but it made me smile. The characters are absolutely recognisable, and the premise works surprisingly well.

Family, True and False by [livejournal.com profile] fell_beast2
Morgan and Garcia help Reid deal with the aftermath of Memoriam. I was cautious about reading because the summary didn't sound like my kind of thing, but I liked the way it unfolded, how both Garcia and Morgan draw Reid out and the strong character-voices. I didn't like the episode very much, but I liked this fic.

Coming Home by [livejournal.com profile] nebula99
Sometimes home isn’t where you thought it was. This takes the incident mentioned in 'Elephant's Memory' and brings home the real nastiness of it. I'm a sucker for any stories about home, and I liked how Nebula made Reid so uncertain all the way through, the ambivalence feeling absolutely right.

Wrong Turn by [livejournal.com profile] buffyaddict13 and [livejournal.com profile] cycatryx
Reid, Hotch, Prentiss, and Morgan find themselves trapped by an UnSub after an investigation takes a terrifying turn. Garcia, Rossi, and JJ try to help before the rest of the team's time runs out. Great idea, so well executed. Long, plotty Gen. Be still my fannish heart.

Fireflies and Good Intentions by [livejournal.com profile] lady_of_scarlet
A snippet of Reid's childhood. A cabin in the woods and a collection of nineteenth century literature. Sad and heartfelt. It's easy to overdose on stories about Reid's childhood, but what I liked about this was the lack of mawkishness. Diana's mental illness feels vivid and real, and Spencer's reactions feel just right for his age and attitude.

Fishooks by [livejournal.com profile] matociquala
Just a short vignette, but a great look at JJ and Reid over a game of cards.

Forgiven by [livejournal.com profile] shawngf
What really struck me about this was the way the author avoids post-Big Game cliches. JJ's voice is strong and real, and the atmosphere is vivid. I skimmed it the first time, not expecting much, but ended up reading it through three times, as there's more going on than meets the eye.

Sisters and Brothers by [livejournal.com profile] and_dark_skies
Ok, this is an unusual one for me, but I really liked the ending. Just a short post-'Jones' conversation.

Dead Man's Hand by [livejournal.com profile] cpolk and [livejournal.com profile] matociquala
This is how it's done. You want tension, character, plot and atmosphere? Read this story. Now. [Reid-centric. Follows on from Two Pair of Aces]

Two Pair of Aces by [livejournal.com profile] matociquala
I love the way this delves into Reid's head to show us everything. There's also some interesting takes on how he relates to the team - great stuff and brilliant writing. [Spoilers for Revelations] Reid's on medical leave, so where is he going to go?

Talking in the dark by [livejournal.com profile] patch_tank
This is only patch's second CM fic, but, like the first ("Abastract Brilliance" see below) this story catches something about the characters really well. Summary: Garcia has eyestrain. [written for 2dozenowies].

Skeleton Keys by [livejournal.com profile] x_1013_x
Spoilers for Revelations. This is an intriguing little piece by a new writer in the fandom. Go! Be nice and comment on it, for it is good!

Retribution by [livejournal.com profile] nebula99
This is a long story - you have been warned! The angst level is high, but so is the description and the quality of the story. It's a bit more emotional than I generally take my CM-fic, but is certainly worth the reading.

Only Human by [livejournal.com profile] goddess_of_7s
Spoiler-free. Very short, but with a great blend of tension and humour. I loved Morgan's reaction, and Reid's last line. Just right.

Shadows in daylight by [livejournal.com profile] jennukes
No spoilers in this one. Although Garcia is the focus, it's Gideon's voice that really struck me. He's hard to do well, and this is done very well. Intelligent, sensitive writing.

Abstract Brilliance by [livejournal.com profile] patch_tank
This is a lovely story - short and sweet. I like the way Garcia and Reid talk to each other, and the humour really works.

Monsters by [livejournal.com profile] 100traenen
A (really) short Morgan POV piece, with a nice look at the way he and the team work together. Not my usual kind of thing at all, but something about it worked for me. There's more by this author for 2dozenowies, which are worth a look.

Regrets by [livejournal.com profile] slash_girl
Spoilers alert! I think for The Fisher King (not seen it, so am going on people's descriptions). It's a look at Hotch's regrets, and, although a bit more introspective than I usually like, the shooting range bit makes it more than worth the read.

From fanfiction.net:

Ok, so this section's proving a heck of a lot harder to fill...there's some scary stuff, and I swear, if I read the phrase "young genius" again, I may have to throw a thesaurus at someone...

ETA: Since I cannot face trailing through 2 years of fic at the Pit, this part of the list will not get updated regularly.

Get a clue
Just a bit of fun, but well put together with nice one-liners and a good ending.

Kidnapped? Again?
I've put this first because I nearly had a hernia trying not to laugh out loud at this. English isn't the writer's first language, so it's patchy in parts, but there are some great one-liners and fantastic cliche busters. Actually, anything by this author is worth a look: Eligent on FF.net. Yay! A plot! *small happy dance*

Quiet Comfort
This is a lovely peaceful story. Reid and Elle are written just right (and just friends...more or less...) and the writer creates a gentle, warm mood. The kind of story that just flows along and takes you with it.

Rummy
Just a bit fun - a good idea nicely done.

Following the initial disclaimer, I realised I should also reserve the right to be shamelessly self-promoting.

Jadesfire's stories:

Correspondence. Spencer can't call Lila, but he can email.

Sweet Memories. After 'A Real Rain', Reid learns an important lesson.

Let it snow. Pure fluff! Being snowed in isn't all bad.

Over the Wine Because I couldn't just leave it at "Let it Snow" and I was intrigued at the fall-out from LDSK. A quiet bar, a few drinks and some serial killers. Downtime for the BAU team (was a random word challenge!)

Tilting at Windmills At some point I will stop writing tags to LDSK. Just not quite yet. Morgan and Reid this time, because despite what Hotch says at the end of the episode, Reid still has to pass the test.
