jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Buffy - Dawn/blah blah blah)

I thought coming back to work today was going to be a bit of a shock after a week in bed, but it's actually quite good. There's so much stuff here that I can be properly busy for the rest of the week, which has to be good for my brain. I'm going to try to limit internet-ing to my breaks and lunch hour, so that I can get these piles of books to lower-than-my-head levels, so for now, just a few links to things I've been doing lately:

The Masterlist of stories is now up at [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon, and there are some real gems there. I haven't read nearly enough of them, so I'll get to a rec list when I can. My own offering is below, and I'm disappointed, disappointed I tell you that no-one spotted it was me - the whole 'Latin quotes and poetry epigraphs' thing wasn't a clue, hmmmm? You're slipping, guys.

Title: Bibula Harena (Part 1)
Author: jadesfire2808
Prompt: Slavery, captivity or hostages
Word Count: 17,000
Rating: M
Warnings/Spoilers: Violence/None
Author's notes: With HUGE thanks as ever to my betas, [livejournal.com profile] crystalshard and [livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper and particularly [livejournal.com profile] miss_zedem who put up with my increasingly panicked texts as the word count rose (and rose and rose). I can honestly say that the story would not have happened without them.
Summary: This is all there is, the stick in his hand, the knife in his belt, the crowd roaring around him, and the man he has to kill.

Link to story: Bibula Harena

I've also been doing more than my fair share of podfic recording, although I'm going to have to wait for my throat to recover before doing more:

You moved up in the standings! You're number 2! ::congratulations dance::

And I really enjoyed those podfics while driving from the farm this weekend. I needed the funny ones, after listening to... hmm, I think it was a couple from your last batch. :) All lovely though. I'll try to make more specific comments after class.

ETA: Okay, I'm back! The stories I was refering to were "Coffee with Luciver" and "Afore the Dawning of the Day," neither of which I'd read before and were wonderful but kind of made me want to crash my car. *g* So the light ones were appreciated, as well. Oh, Keith.

I wish I had been able to take notes, but one thing I was impressed with in your reading of "Afore the Dawning of the Day" was Lisa's voice. I felt like with Jack and Lisa in that story you were *performing* them, and it was really effective.

*grin* Thanks! I'm fairly chuffed myself. Although I've only got a four point lead, so I've got some stories I want to record this week, if I can find time, and I fully intend to utterly cheat by picking crossovers :)

Oh dear...er...sorry? I'll make a point of recording things in happy/sad pairs to avoid future automobile accidents.

And thank you so much. I'm starting to tackle things that are a bit further out of my comfort zone, and that amount of dialogue was definitely 'out there'. I'm cautious about actually 'doing' voices/accents, but sometimes I think it's necessary, to tell the difference. We'll see how it goes...

I'm so glad you're enjoying them, and I really appreciate the specifics - I'm enjoying myself so much that it's hard to tell what I'm hitting and what I'm missing!

Oh, no, I'm sorry! I chose a bad way to express how dark and affecting I thought the fics were. I'm very glad you recorded them! It doesn't matter how you combine them. :)

Yeah, I think it's *really* risky, mainly with accents. If you fail, it's glaring, but if you don't try it doesn't really stand out. And even professional actors don't always do a good job. There seems to be a way to get the stress and rhythm of a voice, though, without jumping all the way on board with the accent, and I agree that that can be very valuable. (And you have achieved it.) I don't know why I can *hear* it all so easily but am unable to do it myself. Maybe with more practice!

*grin* don't worry, I got it :)

I know exactly what you mean about being able to *hear* it without being able to reproduce it. I'm tempted by a wonderful House/Firefly crossover, but there's so much Mal dialogue that I'm not sure I can really pull it off. Which is sad. I might have a run at it, just to see.

I am, however, probably going to record one of my Rodney fics, and maybe ask [livejournal.com profile] greyias if I can record one of hers, just because his speech patterns are so distinctive. And worryingly close to mine... :D
