jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - beware of the books)

The whole "feeling a bit bleh" is starting to make me sound like a broken record, so we'll skip that and get straight to the point for a change, although not before pointing out my very cool icon made for me by [livejournal.com profile] hllangel - have I mentioned lately how cool my flist is? No? Consider it mentioned.

Having had a quick look at the maths, it looks like I'm going to come third at [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon, which considering I had a week where I didn't record anything at all, is pretty good going. There's over 8 hours of audiofic on my page now (see sidebar for link), and I'm going to settle down to some longer stuff once the competition is over and we're back from holiday. I have this vague notion of recording 24 hours of fic before the end of the year, but we'll see what happens.

In the meantime, huge thanks to all the authors who kindly let me play with their fic. It's been an absolute joy and pleasure.

In other news, I'm have a feeling that my [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang is a story I want to have written, rather than one I actually want to write. This is also because the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang (2 weeks to the grand opening - wheee!) and TimeStamp meme stories have woken up the Jack in my head again, and every time I start thinking about stories, he's the first person I think of. So. I'm going to give it 24 hours, and if I still don't have the inclination to write the SGA story, I'll drop out officially and concentrate on Sic Transit Tempus and Audiofic.

It's all go here, isn't it? *rolls eyes* How's everyone else? Hope your Mondays aren't too unbearable.

ETA: Something [livejournal.com profile] joanna_may said in a comment on my Doctor Who post has got me thinking, but since that's not my strong point today, could someone help me out, please?

Joanna pointed out that the other person to communicate with the Doctor through the psychic paper was the face of Boe. Who, if we're going to go with RTD's canon, is Jack.

In "Silence in the Library", we had River Song who's like a walking Jack-reference, from the flirting to the squareness gun. In "The Sontaran Strategem" we had the Doctor saying "Are you my mummy?". Have there been any other Jack references so far this series? My mind's gone utterly blank. The thing is, we know that Rose is coming back, and we know from JB's interviews that he's in S4, but they haven't publicised it. So is anyone else hoping that Jack's going to swoop in and save the day? He certainly doesn't seem to have been forgotten. :D

I have to admit, my initial thought was that River was Jack, or somehow connected to him, largely because of the flirting and the psychic paper thing.

Then I figured, no. The Doc hasn't had a 'you're wrong' reaction to River, nor have I ever heard Jack call the Doc 'sweetie'.

Having said which, there's definitely something going on. The library being in the 51st century has to be some kind of link to Jack, surely. The diary - well, Ianto keeps a diary (whee, tenuous link ftw!). The 'mummy' thing. Did the Doc say something to someone (possibly Martha) about getting as bad as Jack? Or did I imagine that?

Hmm. Seems thinking's not working out too well for me today, either...

The River/Jack parallel was pretty obvious - I'm assuming they're going for a 'this is what 51st century people are like' kind of thing.

The undercurrent is so strong, that it's got me unusually speculative - normally I'm content to wait, but there's definitely something.

I think you're right about him saying that to someone, probably martha. Oh well, I shall just have to go back and watch them all again... The hardship ;)

Well, whatever they're up to, I hope they actually use Jack this time, instead of just using him as set decoration...

I remember River saying "I'm getting worse than you," to the Doctor. Though there was something about Jack in the second Sontaran episode, when they're resucing real-Martha.

Hey, you gotta go where the muse takes ya. If it's back to Cardiff and the Tardis... well, we will miss you desperately, but it's better not to drive yourself insane trying to make something work if it's just not coming. (That's not hypocritical at all, is it? ;) It sounds like an awesome story, either way... who knows, it might come back to you later on.

In other news, I really need to start watching Dr. Who (it might make some parts of Torchwood make more sense!). As Whovian, do you recommend me picking up with the Ninth Doctor and working my way from there, or is it the kind of show where you can pick up anywhere?

Yeah. I like writing SGA stories, but Jack always trumps them, and when he starts talking, I can't really write anything else. Maybe when I'm washed out with Torchwood, I'll come back to it, but not yet, I think.

I would definitely recommend starting with the Ninth Doctor - it'll sort of make sense if you come in in the middle, and it's certainly entertaining if you do, but there's a definite arc to the stories that will work better if you see them in order. Enjoy!

I hear you. When a character digs their way into your mind that deep, there's really not much denying them. In fact, they don't leave after you finish their story, they just stick around and say "Hey, that was really mean what you did with me last time... but sequel plz?"

I shall start with Nine then. Might not purchase the DVDs as they seem ungodly expensive. Hopefully SciFi will be kind and decide to replay some episodes, otherwise... the intarweb is my friend.

Jack pretty much drowns out anyone else's voice. It's been well over a year since I meant to write this last series, and he's getting impatient. Still, at least after this, there can be no more sequels!

You know, I'm actually kind of jealous of the thought of coming to New Who for the first time. The Ninth Doctor was amazing, especially for those of us who'd waited for him our whole childhoods. I'll look forward to hearing what you think :)

There's something satisfying (and kind of sad) about finishing out a series. It's this huge feeling of accomplishment, but then you've got this hole where all that planning and thought used to be. I swear, if anyone asks for a sequel/prequel/missing scene of this Big Bang fic, I might hurt them. It's so wangst inducing as it is.

I'm so very new to the Whoverse, which is funny because my mother has been trying for a few years to get me to watch it (it and Red Dwarf). Actually, I'm a little sad, because a few years ago when I was doing a study course in London we got to take a tour of the BBC, and guess what prop room we wound up in?

A lot of my fellow students around me were squeeing about this that and the other, and I'm peering over this shiny cone shaped thing wondering what the heck a "Dalek" is, and why everyone is finding it so awesome.

Sadly, I don't think I took any pictures of that room or tour.

I'll definitely make some squee/episode reaction posts as I go along. I guestimate that I might be all caught up just in time for the new season of Torchwood.

doesn't the Doctor say something about "Volcano Day" in the "Fires of Pompei"?

And he mentions Jack to clone Martha in "Poison Skies" or whatever that one is called.

sorry the SGAbigbang might not work for you.

Ooh, I'd forgotten Volcano Day, yes. And there was the thing about the clone in the Sontaran episodes. There's definitely something going on there...

Yeah, it just won't come, and I can't make it. That is, I could, but it would suck, so I'm not going to. Still, it means I can make a start on "The Watching Years" :D

There was another reference to Jack: witht he Soltaran clone of Martha, the Doctor said something about not telling Jack about it. I can't rmember the exact line, but at the time, I wasn't sure if that was a reference to Jack being the type to shoot first and ask questions later, or just that Jack would use the cloning technology for sex (either to clone himself or sleep with two people at the same time...)

*nods* I'd forgotten that one. There's definitely a Jack-undercurrent through this series. We can only hope that it's actually going somewhere!
