Vid recs

So, a while back I decided to stop being scared of vids and actually watch some. It never really took, though, and I stuck to ones that got heavy recs from friends or were by people I knew.

But sometimes taking a risk pays off. [livejournal.com profile] micewerefurious has 4 fanvids. Doctor Who + the Musicals = Wins Everything.

I'm serious. Click here for Doctor Who does Les Miserables, and here for Miss Martha Jones does Cabaret (with Captain Jack as Elsie). No, seriously. Why are you still reading this? I mean it. Stop. Click. Leave a comment. Come back if you want but go. Go now.

Shoo.

I understand next to nothing about vidding, except when I'm seeing good ones. And few have caught me as much as these. I think it's the cleverness of them, especially in 'One Day More'. The (what I can only call) casting, the timing and the pacing just *worked* for me. It helps that I love the songs, but I think that mostly means that if they'd been awful, I would have known it. But they're brilliant, and I'm never going to be able to listen to the songs again without grinning.

On a completely and utterly unrelated matter, does anyone out there speak Portuguese? I'm reliant on Babelfish for a fic, and that's never a good thing...

[livejournal.com profile] tekalynn, who's on my flist, speaks Portuguese--want me to pass on a question to her? I'm sure she'd be happy to help.

Ooh, I might, once I work out how much I'm going to need translated. I'm hoping to mostly crib from phrase books, but a native speaker could be useful if I attempt anything more complicated.

Thanks!

Hmm, not convinced, although I love the person's username - Hitchhikers Guide references always make me happy :) Also, that sounded like Michael Ball as Marius, which also pleases me inordinately.

Don't know any Portuguese at all. That's appalling *feels very remiss* Good luck finding someone!

It is Michael Ball as Marius - it's the version from the 10th Anniversary concert. I could probably name the rest of the cast, but I'll resist...

Heh, I know 'obrigado' and 'port' but that's about it :) Should be fun!

Now, have you seen Papa Don't Preach?

Oh yes. Papa Don't Preach is also on my 'genius' list :) that and [livejournal.com profile] lim's Us (http://www.imeem.com/sublim/video/LQU2ToIY/us/) always make me grin :D

I know "obrigado" is "thank you" in Portuguese, if you need that. There is this, too:

I don't even like most musicals and found those vids to be simply wonderful. Jack as Elsie was simply inspired! As was matching the heroic voice in 'One Day More' to Jack in chains. Can't get enough of that, yessirree. :D

I'm a huge muscials fan, so I adored these. There should now be Torchwood AU fic, with Jack as Enjolras and the Doctor as Jean Valjean. Yes indeed.

And I dug this icon out, just for you ;)

Oh, yes to the icon. Maybe not every week -- we don't want to become jaded -- but once in a while is nice. :D

Those are fabulous videos. I'm still a fan of 'Papa Don't Preach' and 'Banned from Argo', though.

Ooh, I don't know 'Banned from Argo', but yes, 'Papa Don't Preach' is definitely a similar level of genius. These made me giggle so much, and I think Jack would quite appreciate being Elsie... ;)

Watch Banned from Argo! I think I found it because somebody rec'd it in your comments a couple of weeks ago. I'll add my voice to the recommendation. :)

Just had a chance to watch the Les Mis one -

Is it a satirical comment on the self-important melodrama of the new Whoniverse? Or is it a sensitive character study founded in pseudo-historical parallelism and classic literary allusion?

Both, wholeheartedly! ::cheers:: (I almost lost it when the Teletubby showed up. Bwah.)

Those are fantastic, both of them. I especially adore Jack as Elsie, and the Face of Boe - "When I saw her laid out like a queen" just had a whole new meaning to me. *g*
