And since I have done other things, some fic recs:

From SGA Big Bang

A Clear and Different Light by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper and [livejournal.com profile] naye
Rodney McKay, raised by a pod of telepathic whales. John Sheppard, mage with fae blood. Teyla Emmagan, rune-scientist. Ronon Dex, winged soldier. On the waystation of Atlantis, they're about to become embroiled in an age-old war against a brutal enemy.
World- and character-building this good should not be missed. Forget the word count. just lose yourself in this.

Imago: The Tao of John by [livejournal.com profile] kristen999
Imago: a creature in its final stage of development. John receives a gift that might be used to destroy the Wraith. It might also kill him. Can his team convince him that the cost is too high?
Pushes the "Tao of Rodney" idea to its limits. Beautifully crafted, with research and character and plot blended together seamlessly.

A Face That Nobody Knows by [livejournal.com profile] aesc
The best night of Rodney McKay's life was when the Night-Owl started serving five-cent coffee after the government ended two years of ration restrictions. As it turned out, it would also be the night he encountered John Sheppard, and even much later there were times when he was still not wholly convinced that it turned out to be a good thing.
SGA, noir-style. I find this style of writing immensely difficult to get through, which is how I know this is well written. I'm only halfway, and damn, it's worth the effort.

And if you really don't have time*:

Penitent by [livejournal.com profile] greyias
It's not penance, because oh, that'd be the kind of afterlife he'd want if he was apt to believe in that sort of thing. Need to atone for your sins? Drink a Molson's, we'll call it even. (Tag for "Miller's Crossing")
What made me stop breathing with this one was the voice. Grey's caught Rodney so perfectly, the wonderful mix of selfishness and guilt and affection and confusion and oh good grief he is so bad with people. But he's also wonderful, and Grey catches both without sacrificing either.

Fools Give You Reasons by [livejournal.com profile] pwcorgigirl
The unexpected was suddenly a gift instead of a complication. [House/Torchwood crossover]
This is a wonderful "what if" story, that paints a vivid, living portrait of Cuddy and Jack, and makes it look effortless. Every detail builds into two fantastic character portraits and an ending that leaves you wanting more. Will probably make more sense to House fans than Torchwood ones, but even if you only have the vaguest sense of the characters, go read it. Read it now.

*But seriously. Make time. These fics were incredibly hard work to produce, the art is breathtakingly good (particularly the ones made for my story, but I'm biased *cough*) and every author on the list deserves a pat on the back and huge glass of the celebratory beverage of their choice.

Also, why is it that the fic you're not meant to be writing is always the one that wants to be written? My top sekkrit story is taking off, while my [livejournal.com profile] artword one (the one with the deadline) has stalled. *sigh* I shall just sketch scenes and wait for inspiration to return.

And since we have the internet at home now, I'll be able to check and update and everything at the weekend! Woo-hoo! *happy dolphin noises* BT? TalkTalk? This is how it's done. O2? You rock.

Thanks so much for the lovely rec of "Fools Give You Reasons." That story made me ridiculously happy while writing it. :)

And for the Big Bang recs. It's nice to know where to jump into something that big, and I've depended on people's recs to steer me to the couple I've read so far.

It made everyone else ridiculously happy to read it, so it seemed the least I could do!

I'd also rec "See no Evil" by [livejournal.com profile] greyias, because I got to read snippets as it went along, and because she is one of the best Gen writers in the fandom. Probably also "The Patriot Act" by [livejournal.com profile] irony_rocks, because if it lives up to the preview and the art, I can forgive it for being John/Elizabeth and just enjoy having her around again! Others have also said that "The Language of Hard Nouns", which is Teyla-centric, is very good, so that's on my hit list, I think.

As you say, there's a lot to choose from - there are previews on this tag (http://community.livejournal.com/sgabigbang/tag/2008+story+previews) at the comm if you want to try before you buy ;)
