This is how the Universe Ends by [livejournal.com profile] googlebrat and [livejournal.com profile] perryvic.
Torchwood/Discworld.

This story achieves the rare trick of catching Pratchett's tone - that mixture of funny and lyrical that is utterly Discworld to me - while being absolutely Jack. And the ending doesn't let you down, which is also a rare trick for this kind of thing. Can't recommend it highly enough.

The Fires In Their Eyes by [livejournal.com profile] norgbelulah
White Collar/Supernatural (pre-series, sort of Neal/Kate/Dean, maybe)

What I loved about this one was the languid tone of the story, and Kate. They're all just kids, really, and that slight bewilderment, slight detachment and unrealness of kids in an adult world really comes across. It's the first really sympathetic portrayal of Kate that I've read, and it's definitely one I want to base my own version of her on. As regular readers know, I'm primarily a visual person, and with this fic I could *see* everything so clearly, it was like watching it on the screen. Fabulous descriptive writing and wonderfully in-character.

As I keep saying (has anyone else noticed how much I repeat myself? I think it's something to do with a short attention span and having to keep remind myself what I think. Anyway,) I'm watching more and more vids, trying to understand them as much as enjoy them. For me, part of the fun of anything creative is understanding the 'how' as much as the thing itself.

So [livejournal.com profile] festivids is all kinds of awesome, and I'm having a blast watching my way through these. Although I'm thinking it could be dangerous in fannish terms. There's sources here that I don't know but think look intriguing...

From sources I do know, so far I've watched the two Much Ado About Nothing vids. Both are as light and joyful as the film, which I've had an abiding affection for since I fell off my cinema seat laughing at it. Seriously, I can't even think about deckchairs without sporfling. Just a Girl is a fantastic celebration of Beatrice, and Your Song is one of those vids that you kind of feel *had* to be made, the song and film suit each other so well.

On the 'Danger: I Do Not Need Another Fandom", Names is an intriguing Vampire Diaries vid, and has made me want to seek out the show, and the other vids for it aren't helping. Meep.

At the other end of the scale, Never Be is a Criminal Minds vid, that just *flaily hands* The summary for the vid says: "women of criminal minds, being a victim does not mean you are defeated." I can't put it better than that. Oh show.

A student, lying in the middle of an aisle, flicking through a book. So far, not so unusual. Except that he had his laptop with him and was wearing headphones. When I went behind him, he had the tennis on full-screen on the computer, while 'reading' the textbook. Honestly.

In completely other news, the SG Awards have just opened for voting. The category system makes the librarian in me twitch, and I only clicked through the Gen section. It was actually an interesting exercise, since it reminded me just how small the Gen portion of SGA fandom is. In a fandom-wide award system, I would not expect to recognise most of the author's names, and yet. Most of the SGA-Gen writers on my flist seem to have been nominated, as well as lots of friends of friends and people whose fic I'm startled to be on the same list as.

Because finding these things is labyrinthine and I am shameless, allow me to point you to the lists where I'm nominated. At least in the Gen category, these also make pretty handy rec lists. I had trouble with direct links to lists (please tell me if any links are broken), but the menu system works, even if it did remind me of those endless automated phone systems. I kept waiting for it to tell me to press '1' for Slash, '2' for Het, '3' for Gen...

Why yes, this is a chance to list some of my favourite SGA stories by me and my friends. Why'd you ask? )
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (SPN - animated - rock paper scissors)
As most of you know, I have a podfic addiction, and since I don't have the time for recording right now, I've been doing a lot of listening. I've been listening to SPN fic mostly, as I've been starting to get into the show and don't have time to read fic either.

Although most of these stories will probably be old news if you've been around the fandom a while, they're also ones where I'd specifically recommend the podfic version (if you like audiobooks, of course). Because this is me, they're all Gen, but they range from the downright silly ("Of Unconventional Dealbreaking" is the silliest and is glorious in its silliness) to the dark and moving.

I'm still working my way through the Supernatural:gen tag at the audiofic archive, so more when I reach the end!

When I first started out in the Criminal Minds fandom 2 years ago, I began a rec list for Gen fic. At that point, there weren't many people writing Gen, so it wasn't that hard to find things to go on the list.

2 years later, and I still don't exactly have a wide field to choose from. But I've just updated the list with some great stories that I've found recently, and now that I've got a delicious account, it's a heck of a lot easier to keep track of things.

The full list is here, and the latest additions are under the cut. As I say on the full list, if you come across Genfic that you think I might like, please do drop me a line. There's lots of great slash/het on rec lists already. I'd like to get a Gen list to match them.

braaaaaaaaaaaainzzzzzz

*ahem*

I actually slept last night, so my body was supremely unimpressed when I had to get out of bed this morning because it wants more, and it wants more now. I'm keeping it at bay with coffee* and work, but it may be a losing battle.

...I'm sure there was meant to be actual content to this post....um...oh yes.

There are mornings when io9.com saves my sanity. A quick skim this morning produced 5 Things I Learned About Women From the James Bond Books, Space Porn, David Tennant In Glasses, An Article About Fibre Optic Sponges That I Lack The Brain Power To Get Through But Looks Intriguing. Also, the new Watchmen trailer, that makes me cautiously optimistic about the film (I can live without the squid, I promise, just make it a good film, okay?)

I've got a long list of stories I want to write, as usual, as well as some non-ficly stuff. There's the Audacity tips that I picked up the other week, a meta on writing action (why is there not more of this? I mean, you don't have to Google very hard to get lots of guides to writing sex scenes - why is there no action meta?), and something that has the working title "In Defence of Gen" that's been brewing for a while now. That last one might not get written, because I'm struggling to find a way to put it that doesn't sound either terribly "entitled" or horribly snide. Still, it'd be good to get it off my chest...

I'm going to be doing a proper promo to [livejournal.com profile] sga_noticeboard later (so that the US is actually awake when I post) but the last of the [livejournal.com profile] artword stories has gone up, and it's the one that I started! Breathe turned out in a direction I could not have predicted, and the art for it is just...guh. Go read and see for yourselves.

Oh, and while I think of it, I'm not doing a "do you want a holiday card" post this year, for the simple reason that I'm going on holiday a few weeks after Christmas, and will send postcards from Morocco to anyone who wants them. I'll put a post up nearer the time. I am, however, contemplating the Holiday Wishes meme, if only because I'd like to see if there's anything I can do for you guys :)

Oh, and also, can I recommend as strongly as possible two new podfics: Rebuilding Babel is one of my all-time favourite Atlantis stories (seriously - language and telepathy and Rodney-centric. I don't think I have a button that this story doesn't push) and the reading is great. For something lighter and shorter, Torture Most Bizarre and Terrible is wonderfully silly.

That's so not everything, but it's all for now. I'm off to do things to invoices, contemplate my Last Fic Writer Standing entry, back up my LJ and mull over some other stories. If there's anyone out there who wanted to do the team challenge at [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic but lacked a writing partner, I have some braincells you can use if you want...

*ETA: Have switched to diet pepsi. No noticeable improvement, but I didn't have to get out of my chair to go get it, which is definitely a plus.

ETA2 Son of ETA: Since I either want to eat or buy everything in the whole world right now, I used my usual distraction technique of raiding the stationery cupboard instead. Cut for stationery porn )

...it's possible that I need to get out more...
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Random - Cat in glasses)
I'm no longer sad that I don't seem to be getting a story in the H/C challenge exchange, because I think [livejournal.com profile] xparrot wrote this just for me:

Blue Colorado Skies
Steampunk. Wild West. Big explosions. Oh yes.
Er, her summary reads more like: Rodney had guessed John Smith would be trouble the day he rode into town and tramped into his shop, yellow with dust and stinking of horse and sweat, and asked if he was McKay. Rodney had looked at the man's worn boots, his shabby black Stetson, and the Colt holstered at his side, and known no good could come of this.

Also, with a firm NO DRINKS warning:
Hello, Rodney by [livejournal.com profile] rhymer23
If you never read Run, John, Run (aka Shep-whump for 3 year olds) start there, then go on to this one. Only click the alternate ending if you've moved the drinks off the desk completely...

And now, to assuage my guilt for not helping to disassemble scaffolding (don't ask), I'm going to start the first of my Fandom Free For All stories. The one that I started last week and accidentally deleted *facepalm*
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Text - hell out of my library)
You know what's really helpful for getting through work that you really don't want to do? Waking up every hour through the night, then waking up properly at 4am and dozing til the alarm goes off. Oh yeah. That really helps.

Fortunately, pottering around my flist always makes me feel better. Also, getting a lift to work from an equally sleepy [livejournal.com profile] major_jim, [livejournal.com profile] rustydog talking to me from my Zen and getting a rec make me feel a whole lot better. And having the Waiting Years described as "just good clean fun" amuses me more than it should. Not that it's an inaccurate description, it's just that it amused me. Maybe if I could think of my stories that way, I'd get more written! Anyway, it's a lovely, thoughtful rec that makes me go all gooey inside.

Of course, I didn't manage anything else off yesterday's to do list, but there's always today, right? My current plan for the oodles of work still left is to come in on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday, when I don't technically have to be here, and just rattle through everything I've got to do. For some reason, I tend to get more done that way. The library is closed for St Giles' Fair, which is a tacky but fun couple of days in Oxford. Because of road closures, the library shuts for a couple of days, so I can bring in some DVDs, sit at my desk and just plough through stuff. Hopefully. Otherwise, I've got a hell of a lot to do in seven days of work...

Other things that cheered me up this morning:

All The Myriad Faces by [livejournal.com profile] xparrot. A tag to "The Shrine", because one can never have too much Zelenka.

A Story Involving Blankets by [livejournal.com profile] aesc. SGA. Does exactly what it says on the tin.

Proof by [livejournal.com profile] maverick4oz and [livejournal.com profile] pollitt. I haven't had a chance to work through this [livejournal.com profile] artword fic yet, but it's definitely inspiring me to get on with my own!

More fic being posted to [livejournal.com profile] bringthehappy. Keep it coming, folks!

Oh, and the fact that I will get paid for typing today, which will put me three-quarters of the way towards the tiny little computer I want. We went in and looked at them in Curry's on Sunday and they're so cute. Want! I'm waiting til January when hopefully more models will be out and I'll actually have all the money I need, but still. WANT!

Hope everyone's week is improving now that it is no longer Monday.

I'm still tired and grumpy today, so am going to throw a whole bunch of links at you then run away to write.

#~ This is an interesting psychometric test, looking at the connection between art and personality. There are paintings to look at, then a basic personality test to take. I score average for things like 'conscientiousness' and 'extraversion', high for intellectualism and low for emotional stability. Well, I'm not going to argue with it...

#~ This week's A Wonderful Way to Make a Living is about guys who work in special effects, including the SFX supervisor on Doctor Who! Unfortunately, they've now taken down last week's, which was equally fascinating, but this article in The Times is on a similar note - The White Hat Hackers.

#~ [livejournal.com profile] bironic! I heard this and thought of you!. I love the BBC radio series Five Numbers. Simon Singh is a brilliant communicator, and manages to make complicated maths sound really simple. The first series was such a success that they made Another Five Numbers, but the one that caught my attention was the episode in A Further Five Numbers on the number 6. Everyone's heard of 6 Degrees of Separation, and many have heard of 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon, but apparently you can do it with mathmaticians too... Each programme is only 15 minutes long and well worth the listen.

#~ If you haven't left a story at [livejournal.com profile] bringthehappy, then please do so! Or just go have a read and a smile. There's some lovely stuff there in all sorts of fandoms, including Torchwood, House, NCIS, Psych and more.

#~ Also check out the story that [livejournal.com profile] aeron_lanart wrote me for my birthday, Every Girl Deserves A Party. Thanks, hon!

#~ There's now a podbook version of [livejournal.com profile] rustydog's reading of my SGA "Five ways..." story. If you haven't downloaded, listened and told her how awesome it is, please do so! Podficcing is hard work, and this is a wonderful reading. The MP3 version is here, and the Podbook one, with a cover courtesy of the fantastic [livejournal.com profile] cybel is here.

#~ You've probably all seen this, but I just discovered [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings's wonderful vid The Glass. It's multifandom, almost non-fandom, and gave me a wonderful warm feeling at the bottom of my heart. Make sure you watch all the way through to the dedication.

#~ And once that one's made you 'ah', go see [livejournal.com profile] crystalshard's Torchwood crack-vid I will Survive, which will make you giggle.

#~ The rest of the day consists of posting fic, writing fic, editing podfic, recording podfic, doing the ironing and finishing my typing job that will contribute towards a baby computer. Lugging the other half's laptop around yesterday, I really, really remembered why I want one. Looking on the internet this morning really, really reminded me that I can't afford one. Yet ;)

#~ If anyone else wants a commentary on anything, now's the time to request it! I'm up to 4 stories, and can probably go to 6 before my brain breaks :)

Any other cool stuff for me to waste my time on? I'm still working my way through VVC recs, [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice's page and various other rec lists, but feel free to point out ones you think I might enjoy. Have a good day, guys!

From SGA Big Bang

A Clear and Different Light by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper and [livejournal.com profile] naye
Rodney McKay, raised by a pod of telepathic whales. John Sheppard, mage with fae blood. Teyla Emmagan, rune-scientist. Ronon Dex, winged soldier. On the waystation of Atlantis, they're about to become embroiled in an age-old war against a brutal enemy.
World- and character-building this good should not be missed. Forget the word count. just lose yourself in this.

Imago: The Tao of John by [livejournal.com profile] kristen999
Imago: a creature in its final stage of development. John receives a gift that might be used to destroy the Wraith. It might also kill him. Can his team convince him that the cost is too high?
Pushes the "Tao of Rodney" idea to its limits. Beautifully crafted, with research and character and plot blended together seamlessly.

A Face That Nobody Knows by [livejournal.com profile] aesc
The best night of Rodney McKay's life was when the Night-Owl started serving five-cent coffee after the government ended two years of ration restrictions. As it turned out, it would also be the night he encountered John Sheppard, and even much later there were times when he was still not wholly convinced that it turned out to be a good thing.
SGA, noir-style. I find this style of writing immensely difficult to get through, which is how I know this is well written. I'm only halfway, and damn, it's worth the effort.

And if you really don't have time*:

Penitent by [livejournal.com profile] greyias
It's not penance, because oh, that'd be the kind of afterlife he'd want if he was apt to believe in that sort of thing. Need to atone for your sins? Drink a Molson's, we'll call it even. (Tag for "Miller's Crossing")
What made me stop breathing with this one was the voice. Grey's caught Rodney so perfectly, the wonderful mix of selfishness and guilt and affection and confusion and oh good grief he is so bad with people. But he's also wonderful, and Grey catches both without sacrificing either.

Fools Give You Reasons by [livejournal.com profile] pwcorgigirl
The unexpected was suddenly a gift instead of a complication. [House/Torchwood crossover]
This is a wonderful "what if" story, that paints a vivid, living portrait of Cuddy and Jack, and makes it look effortless. Every detail builds into two fantastic character portraits and an ending that leaves you wanting more. Will probably make more sense to House fans than Torchwood ones, but even if you only have the vaguest sense of the characters, go read it. Read it now.

*But seriously. Make time. These fics were incredibly hard work to produce, the art is breathtakingly good (particularly the ones made for my story, but I'm biased *cough*) and every author on the list deserves a pat on the back and huge glass of the celebratory beverage of their choice.

Also, why is it that the fic you're not meant to be writing is always the one that wants to be written? My top sekkrit story is taking off, while my [livejournal.com profile] artword one (the one with the deadline) has stalled. *sigh* I shall just sketch scenes and wait for inspiration to return.

And since we have the internet at home now, I'll be able to check and update and everything at the weekend! Woo-hoo! *happy dolphin noises* BT? TalkTalk? This is how it's done. O2? You rock.

Every day until the site goes live, [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang writers are giving previews of their work at the comm. Mine won't be til next week, but I thought I'd point it out for anyone who wants to make sure they don't miss a fic that would be perfect for them.

I've read some great SGA fic lately and keep forgetting to link to them. They're all happy stories, because that seems to be what I need at the moment:
Fics )
Anyone care to rec me good Torchwood fic? I've been doing that much writing lately, I haven't had the chance to wade through the newsletter to find good stuff.

And yes, in addition to the Big Bang, the Flashfic and the Audiofic recording, there's yet more output from me. Don't ask where it's all coming from.

I'm thinking of writing some commentary-type stuff, maybe on the Big Bang pieces, or some meta-y stuff that's been bugging me lately. Except the only way I seem to be able to write at the moment is in stupidly intense bursts, rattling through 6,000 words in a day and not wanting to stop. I'm pretty sure it's avoidance behaviour, but it's...frustrating. The one meta I do definitely want to write is one about hypoglycaemia and SGA. I know of one fic that actually deals with it properly, and while I don't think it's a big thing, it's annoying to see something you know about done wrong.
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - turning pages)
Proper post to follow, but just a quick driveby...

Torchwood guys! If you haven't read [livejournal.com profile] out_there's stuff, go now! I love her style, which is character-focussed, bright, heartfelt and spot-on in terms of character.

Recovery is a heart-breaking coda to 'Exit Wounds', while The Day After, and The Day After That is a Fragments follow-up, which shows you so much about Ianto and Jack. And The Tastes of Aliens had me sniggering at my desk.

I'm having to ration myself to a)avoid spamming her, and b)get some work done. So. Go! Read! Spam her on my behalf :)

With thanks to [livejournal.com profile] in_the_bottle for the tip.
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Random - Time Lord Stig)
I'm in a strange, drifty mood today, probably brought about by lack of sleep. Knowing I was knackered, I turned in early, switched the light out at 9.45.

And woke up at 11.15. I'd been having a very odd, very real feeling dream cut because even I think it's long and odd )

I've been in a bit of a fic funk lately - I barely read anything that wasn't written by my flist and when I look at my own stuff, all I can see are the problems. Beta work has also been minimal (although [livejournal.com profile] fandom_me is both saving and melting my brain, bless her), which is a shame as that usually kicks my own writing into action. It'll pass, but it's seriously annoying. However, my search for fic to record is taking me some wonderful places, and I'm finding stuff that I love, even if I never record it. I've added a whole bunch to my del.icio.us account, and have fallen head over heels for [livejournal.com profile] penknife's stories. We only have a couple of fandoms in common, but she's got the some of the few really good Star Wars stories that I've read, as well as pitch-perfect 1602 fic. And I'm using her(?) journal to find more good stuff. And I was reminded of how small LJ is, when I clicked through to one of her friends, [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra, only to find [livejournal.com profile] smtfhw on her friends-list. Small, small world :) Anyway, the point is: go read her fic, it's great!

Also, if you want to know what librarians really do in their spare time: Video Tour of the SSL in Oxford. Why am I recommending a video of an Oxford library? Because not many of them use 'Voodoo Child' as a soundtrack, or feature a certain familiar time traveller...
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Random - tree with rainbow)
Does anyone have any spare sleep they could let me have? I mean, someone must be getting double rations, cos I'm not using my full allocation, that's for sure.

The problem with being sleepy is that I'm restless. The good thing about being sleepy is that the tiniest things make me exceedingly happy, like the fact that I had an excuse to wear my new white* tights today. They were the only ones that would go with this skirt and I had to wear this skirt because it's the only one that goes with this shirt, and this is the only shirt I can wear that doesn't have to go with one of the skirts that I currently don't quite fit into. If you see what I mean...

*They're actually white fishnets. Well, sort of fishnets. More like a herringbone pattern, but I guess that's fishy enough to count.

Also making me happy is the lovely lunch I had yesterday with [livejournal.com profile] hllangel and [livejournal.com profile] kijikun. I now have a shiny JB keyring on my computer, and I got a full report of the concerts, making me incredibly jealous. It's awesome meeting people off my flist and knowing that you're all as lovely in RL as you are online.

I'm hoping that the slightly dazed feeling will suppress my nerves enough to let me start writing my Big Bang story. So far I have 2 sentences, 33 words and one typo. I should probably start by correcting the typo. *sigh* But I did first 'drafts' of two audiofics last night, and I have found a bright spot on the horizon, so it's not all doom and gloom. Plus, I have to spend all of Monday invigilating interview 'aptitude tests', and there won't be anything I can do except write. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it :)

Speaking of jobs, my shared office phone rang yesterday, and, as is my wont, I answered it:

Me: Hello, library workroom
Porter: Hi, Jades, is that you?

To which the only possible answer should have been 'no', but since I suffer from fuzziness of thought myself, I was kind and ackowledged that it was, indeed, me. At that point, anyway.

Not so hard a life really, although if someone wants to come catalogue journals for me, I wouldn't say no. On the plus side, if you pile them high enough, they're surprisingly comfy to sleep on...

ETA: And oh dear, that was thunder. Did I mention that I'm petrified of thunder? No? And I'm stuck at the main desk, where I can't duck underneath it and no stuffed animal to hug. Urgle.

Oh, and so I'm now thinking canvas shoes were not the brightest decision I've made today *headdesK*

The other problem with being sleepy is that I make random posts. Let me make up for it by pointing at nice things:

I'm waaaaay too tired to make my way through [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon stories, but I started the two published today, and they both look really good, especially the Keller one, so give it a go!

They Came to Norway to Eat Our Brains by [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4 is a lovely Alt!universe story, with Rose and Mickey and surprise special guest star. Mickey in particular is beautifully written in this, and I heartily recommend it.

The Author's love-in over at [livejournal.com profile] miss_zedem's needs more contributions. Go! Be proud of yourselves.

It is possibly not good for me to have a daily email from I can has cheezburger, as although it makes me smile, I also have the urge to repost half the pictures here. I resist this most of the time, but this one just seemed to appropriate to miss.

For the first time in a few years, my mother didn't text me to remind me to put the clocks forward. So, of course, we forgot, and I only realised when I rolled over, put the radio on and heard "this is the news at eight o'clock".

It's not too bad for me, since I knew I was going to be spending the morning curled up having some quality time with a hot water bottle, but the other half was distinctly underwhelmed. Still, I think he was only about half an hour late for church...

But I refuse to believe I'm the only one, hence the following poll:

[Poll #1162863]

In other news, Radio 4 listeners, if you haven't already, you have to listen to this. Tag line: Radio 4 news hit by giggling fit . Brilliant stuff. Other fun stuff I've seen lately includes:
Cut because there's more of it than I realised )

Today's jobs include 2 lots of beta-ing, sorting out bank accounts, switching round icons (I want my 'Jack in chains' one back, as well as one that says 'hello'), trying to buy some glasses for both me and the other half, and seeing if my Big Bang story is actually dead or if something can be salvaged. But for now, the sun is shining and the flat is quiet, so I'm going to see if my throat will let me get some recording done. I might even consider getting dressed...

Have a good Sunday, everyone!

1. This needs to be an icon. Right now. [livejournal.com profile] nnwest (who provided the link), [livejournal.com profile] miss_zedem and I will be eternally grateful.

2. People keep reccing vids to me, which I'm loving. I'm also going to have to go on a more concerted 'what makes a good vid' hunt, because I like to understand processes as well as products. With words and stories, I know where I am. With vids...not so much, mostly because I haven't seen enough to be able to compare. Should be fun. I shall be hunting down the vidders on my flist anyway, but recs, tips and hints are appreciated.

2a. I have so far enjoyed this one (recced by [livejournal.com profile] seti_drd) and this one (recced by [livejournal.com profile] karaokegal), and am off to look at the ones [livejournal.com profile] rustydog recced last week.

3. I really need a copy of 'The Streets of Ankh-Morpork' to get my Big Bang fic done. It's starting to take shape in my head if not on paper, and that's half the battle. But I'm getting all confuzzled as to where things are, hence needing the map. Jack's story just took a bizarre twist to the dark side, which is fine, but I think the whole thing's going to be darker than I thought. Interesting.

4. Jack has pointed out to me this evening that I don't have a clue what I'm doing with 'The Watching Years' and it's really about time I did. Anyone with requests, speak up now before I make any decisions...

5. I'm umming and ahing as to whether to sign up for Remix/Redux. So much, in fact, that I think I'd better cut this bit... )

6. What with one thing and another (and having seen it last week!), I'd almost forgotten it was Torchwood tonight. We're out, so I'll have to re-watch 'Reset' in the morning before writing the [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_meta post. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it...

That's me. I'm all about the duty and responsibility ;) Have a good day/evening, everyone!

After moaning yesterday, let me give you some happy things today:

- Through the Virgin Radio site, you can access various live sessions and videos. As I've mentioned before, I love Newton Faulkner's music, and they've got a recording of him "Unplugged and Airborne". The man even sounds great playing in a hot air balloon, and looks over the moon to be doing it at all, as well as slightly disconcerted by the occasional blasts of hot air. Plus, the acoustic version of 'Dream Catch Me' is soooo much better than the single version. His music always makes me smile, and this was no exception.

- I've recently read a couple of very happy SGA fics: Fluff and fold by [livejournal.com profile] kristen999 is a lovely 'slice of life' type story, as well as tackling one of life's great questions. the other is If you can't beat 'em, join 'em by [livejournal.com profile] wildcat88 is a great Harmony tag, with some pitch-perfect banter.

- Not so happy, but just gorgeous is All Our Sunsets by [livejournal.com profile] topaz_eyes. Set at the end of 'Captain Jack Harkness', it captures a moment so beautifully, and is a brilliant insight into Jack. Just lovely.

- They've found a new animal. And it's so cute!

- [livejournal.com profile] matsujo9 introduced me to www.cuteoverload.com, which has cheered up some miserable days, but my favourite is definitely the dolphins blowing bubbles. Just incredibly sweet and surprisingly soothing to watch.

Reccage

I'm battling away with my two AU stories for [livejournal.com profile] tw_exchange at the moment, so don't suppose I'm going to get much else done. I'm aware that I owe people a Robin Of Sherwood/TW crossover and an UNCLE/TW crossover, but they'll have to wait until inspiration strikes…

In the mean time, for your reading pleasure:

Stalking 101 by [livejournal.com profile] tanarian. Yes, I know this has been recced just about everywhere, but it can't be read by too many people. Really good, funny, clever stories are rare in any fandom, and especially in Torchwood.

And if you liked that, you'll love:

Lost Property by [livejournal.com profile] szm which is a kind of prequel to the above and just as funny.

Staying on the humour theme:

Jack Harkness, the infinitely prolonged by [livejournal.com profile] travels_in_time nearly killed me with laughter. Just brilliant.

And one that made me smile (and drool)

Chocolate by [livejournal.com profile] crystalfic

Other Doctor Who stories that have caught my attention lately are:

The Oncoming Tongue by [livejournal.com profile] dark_aegis. Okay, so I'm biased, as I made some of the suggestions, but this is pure genius and I could just see it happening.

Bringing the tone to a more sombre level, is

Remembering by [livejournal.com profile] nessaja82 which has Jack, Rose and Nine in it. It's sad, beautiful and heartbreaking. Definitely a three hankie fic. If you read nothing else from this list, read this.

And for similar heartbreak:

The Burden of Truth by [livejournal.com profile] dark_aegis which is a Jack-centric, melancholy walk through his life. This one broke me, just a little.

There's lots more that I've probably forgotten, but these are just what I've read most recently :) Enjoy and don't forget to comment!

Since I'm about to flood you all with my own work, I thought the least I could do was point you in the direction of other people's as well:

[livejournal.com profile] fangrrl_squees The Harkness Supremacy
Not only proving that if it breathes, Jack can flirt with it, this has got plot, pace and action a-plenty.
"What happens when a member of MI6, an assassin and a former time agent run into each other in Hong Kong? Quite a lot."

[livejournal.com profile] terrylj Nothing but Sand
Time-twisting, incredibly ingenious story, that should be confusing but completely works.
"An unexpected event pulls Rose and Jack away from the Doctor, throwing them into separate timestreams."

[livejournal.com profile] miss_zedem Welsh for Beginners
A by turns funny, heartfelt and touching story, with great characterisation and a convincing OC.
"Sometimes you find answers when you weren't looking for them..."
