...I have seen the Doctor Who casting news, despite my current internet patchiness (writing lists then shopping for them takes a loooong time ;)) Since some of you may be/wish to remain unspoiled, I've chosen a neutral icon and will keep all reactions under a cut. I only have a few so far anyway.

My first thought? I'm going to be older than Doctor Who. This is a weird, weird thought. I'm disappointed that Paterson Joseph lost out, and hope that Matt Smith can make himself sufficiently different from Tennant to really be Eleven. He'll get the same chance as Ten as far as I'm concerned, and while I doubt I'll love him as much as I still love Nine, he might grow on me yet.

He will still be younger than me though! This remains weird.

But that's because you're so very, very young!

*nod* I'm not sure about him, not having seen him act or even heard of him, but I figure I'll give him a chance. Same as all the other Doctors/Companions.

No major reaction thus far. It's so much how young the actor is, but how young he actually looks. A lot will also have to do with who they cast as a companion, and how much residual Rose-moping we might have to contend with.

My #1 concern with any Doctor at this point is Jack-related. I won't be able to form a solid opinion until there's Jack/New!Doc interaction.

Isn't the age just weird? I feel like a failure, first Ianto, now the Doctor! ^^

I don't mind being younger than the Doctor, it was bound to happen eventually, but did they have to make him THAT young?

I have no idea who Matt Smith is. I've never seen him act, but his age could create stumbling blocks if he were to have to be in a scene with Sarah Jane or Jack, both of whom he should (as the Doctor) act a certain way towards, but it would take quite a bit of skill and fortitude on Eleven's part to be able to put on the right reaction... if that makes sense.

I'm sure he'll grown on me. AS much as Ten did anyway, but I do wonder if the bbc made the change that much harder to accept by who they chose

Heh, I'm finding all the "but he's younger than me!!!" reactions rather amusing - I got that out of the way with DT (if only by a year). :) I think he could be good - by all accounts he was the casting stand-out and we have to trust the professionals on this - and as I never really took to Ten, I'm looking forward to seeing him in action.

Not too fussed about any Eleven/Jack interactions (I find DW!Jack rather painful to watch these days as I much prefer him as the stronger, darker character he is in TW) but am really looking forward to any interactions with Sarah-Jane! That could be rather hilarious.... :)

I'm dreading the day when the actor chosen to play the Doctor is young enough to legally be my child! If I was 2 years older I'd be there already!

I think I'm going to quite like him.

I'm not sure that we will ever see any DW crossover with SJA or TW again. In fact, with RTD leaving Who, the future of the other two shows could be in some jeopardy. I still don't know if RTD will no longer have anything to do with either of them once he leaves DW.

And I was getting the impression with JE that RTD was trying to tie up all the loose ends, so as to leave a clean playing field for Moffat. (Not original with me, but lots of folks seem to take this as a given.)

Yeah, I can't quite see 11 acting the way 10 did in SR towards SJS. :(

I've no idea if there are plans for a S3 of SJA or S4 of TW, or how TW's S3 will tie into DW (or if it'll even acknowledge it- I hope it does, considering Ianto and Gwen finally met the Doctor and all, but it might ignore it) so there might be nothing for Moffat to crossover DW to, if that makes sense.

I can't really wrap my head around the fact that the new guy is so young. But, I'll give him a chance, for all my ranting about the age and the looks.

Your neutral icon is so beautiful, btw. And your header reminds me of the library in Silver on the Tree, the last book in the wonderful the Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper, the great fantasy author. (Btw, ignore that Dark is Rising movie, even if CE was in it.)

Oh, didn't I read that S3 of SJA had been greenlighted? Can't remember now. *must check up on that*

And only five shows of TW's S3 seems a bit strange, and all to be shown in one week. I suspect that's unusual, even for the BBC?

the 5 episode arc of TW's S3 is a bit strange, but it'll be on BBC1, which is supposed to be much better than airing on the other BBC channels if I understand the tv system over there. The BBC said there'd only be 5 episode because of money troubles or something like that.

Okay. That would be good for TW. I read that it got better ratings when it was on BBC2 than when it was on BBC3 (which isn't seen by as many people, if I understand that correctly). The BBC is having to convert to digital (all) just like our US tv stations/systems/channels/networks/whatever, and I know that's costing a lot of money.

And your tree makes me think of The Tree! I love that series. And according to my big sis, CE was the best thing about the film (which I haven't seen).

I learnt an awful lot about Welsh pronunciation from those books and I can still say "Y maent yr mynyddoedd yn canu,
ac y mae’r arglwyddes yn dod" with an apparently half decent Welsh accent. With me coming from Liverpool and being part Welsh I suppose that isn't exactly surprising.

I am now passing my love of those books onto my niece and nephews...

I think BBC could solve all its money woes by auctioning off the deleted scene of Jack and the defabricator from DW S1

Ah, so the icon did its job. *grins*

From the reviews I read when The Seeker came out, I suspect your sister was correct!

The comm [livejournal.com profile] thedarkisrisng has a link to a post in another comm's LJ that compares and contrasts DiR the novel to the movie. You will have to search the comm for the posts back in 2007 when the movie was announced and then coming out. Fans like myself were horrified at how poorly the script treated the novel.

I love those books and try to re-read them at Christmas. It's wonderful that you are passing on your love of them. :)

Liverpool and half-Welsh. That's interesting, because for some odd reason (really can't remember why) I've been reading all the American and British entries at the Wiki on dialects. The one on Scouse mentions the many Welsh immigrants, amongst many others, in the 17th and 18th centuries coming into Liverpool and having a strong influence. The one on Welsh of course breaks down the various dialects in Wales, including the fact that the Cardiff accent isn't highly respected!

On my mother's side of the family, we're Scots, Irish, some English, and that most disliked of all, Scots-Irish or Ulster Scots. By the reading the Wiki I can see/hear how our Southern American dialect is rather influenced by the Appalachian dialect.

My Welsh-descended friend (she's from West "By God" Virginia) and I tried to teach ourselves Irish Gaelic at university. We kind of failed. *laughs*

It's all very fascinating!

I'm part Irish too - a pretty typical mix for a Scouser! I have to admit I find Welsh a lot easier to pronounce than Gaelic - I keep getting my Scots and Irish mixed up.

*laughs* The main reaction on my flist I've been seeing is "the Doctor's younger than me!" Which is true for me, too...I'm a little "ehh..." that he looks so much like Tennant, the BBC's not taking any risks.

Eh...we'll see!

*g* I'm only a year older than him, but it's the first time I've been in this position so it's *weird* still ;) More than prepared to give him a chance, though. I'm fairly easy going, so as long as the writing's good, I'll probably like him.

Hmmm. Because of the way I write Jack, my Jack's Doctor is always Nine, which I think gives me an odd view on Jack/Doctor interactions and I tend not to worry about that too much. The Doctor changes but Jack stays the same - as long as the Torchwood serial is half-decent (*closes eyes and clicks heels together*) I'll be happy.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens...
