Just to say...
Jan. 3rd, 2009 08:55 pm...I have seen the Doctor Who casting news, despite my current internet patchiness (writing lists then shopping for them takes a loooong time ;)) Since some of you may be/wish to remain unspoiled, I've chosen a neutral icon and will keep all reactions under a cut. I only have a few so far anyway.
My first thought? I'm going to be older than Doctor Who. This is a weird, weird thought. I'm disappointed that Paterson Joseph lost out, and hope that Matt Smith can make himself sufficiently different from Tennant to really be Eleven. He'll get the same chance as Ten as far as I'm concerned, and while I doubt I'll love him as much as I still love Nine, he might grow on me yet.
He will still be younger than me though! This remains weird.

Date: 2009-01-03 09:19 pm (UTC)I have no idea who Matt Smith is. I've never seen him act, but his age could create stumbling blocks if he were to have to be in a scene with Sarah Jane or Jack, both of whom he should (as the Doctor) act a certain way towards, but it would take quite a bit of skill and fortitude on Eleven's part to be able to put on the right reaction... if that makes sense.
I'm sure he'll grown on me. AS much as Ten did anyway, but I do wonder if the bbc made the change that much harder to accept by who they chose

Date: 2009-01-03 11:36 pm (UTC)And I was getting the impression with JE that RTD was trying to tie up all the loose ends, so as to leave a clean playing field for Moffat. (Not original with me, but lots of folks seem to take this as a given.)
Yeah, I can't quite see 11 acting the way 10 did in SR towards SJS. :(

Date: 2009-01-03 11:11 pm (UTC)Not too fussed about any Eleven/Jack interactions (I find DW!Jack rather painful to watch these days as I much prefer him as the stronger, darker character he is in TW) but am really looking forward to any interactions with Sarah-Jane! That could be rather hilarious.... :)

And your header reminds me of the library in Silver on the Tree, the last book in the wonderful the Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper, the great fantasy author. (Btw, ignore that Dark is Rising movie, even if CE was in it.)

Date: 2009-01-04 01:03 am (UTC)I learnt an awful lot about Welsh pronunciation from those books and I can still say "Y maent yr mynyddoedd yn canu,
ac y mae’r arglwyddes yn dod" with an apparently half decent Welsh accent. With me coming from Liverpool and being part Welsh I suppose that isn't exactly surprising.
I am now passing my love of those books onto my niece and nephews...

Date: 2009-01-04 03:44 pm (UTC)The similarity is my fear as well. As much as Ecclestone remains the Doctor of my heart (well, after Peter Davison), I grew to like Tennant and hope to do the same again. But for that, I need him to be his own person, not just a copy. Should be interesting...

Date: 2009-01-04 03:31 pm (UTC)Yes, and yes.
Oh, well. Time to start the campaign for Paterson Joseph for 12! :D

Date: 2009-01-04 03:46 pm (UTC)It's at times like these that I appreciate the sanity of my flist - while other parts of the internet are melting down, most of us are just going 'huh, he's young but we'll see what he can do' He'll get the same chance as Piper, Tennant, Agyeman and Tate did as far as I'm concerned!

Date: 2009-01-05 07:37 pm (UTC)I must say, I'm very unsure about their choice. I'd hoped they'd go for a complete departure, either a blond, a black guy or even a woman (with a studly male side-kick). I'm actually younger than Matt Smith (who I'd not heard of) and the age makes me 'hmm' but then it's not your age but what you do with it (look at the youthfulness of some of the older doctors in the way they portray him). The thing that bothers me the most is his hair *grins* i know...ridiculous of me to say, but i just think it looks so forced and wrong, i hope that the styling he gives himself for the doctor will be better.
when it comes down to it, it all depends on how he approaches the character. he has tough shoes to fill and how he plays it will dictate the public response.
now...are we gonna start the speculation about companions? lol.
ETA: Oh...as for Sarah Jane Smith; I can totally see her mothering him. In fact he could be Luke's big brother lol

Date: 2009-01-06 09:02 am (UTC)His age genuinely doesn't bother me (despite the post ;)) as I think it's all about the performance. My worry is that he's going to be another Tennant, and won't be able to be *himself*. But we'll give him a chance and see what happens.
*g* Yes, Sarah could have a good shot at mothering him. As for other companions, I'm really not thinking about it right now. Jack will be Jack, as he always is, but the one that could be interesting is Martha.
All this speculation and we've still got a year before we see him!
