These are a combination of fic and podfic recs. Sometimes, because the reader made it sound awesome, I stuck with a fic for much longer than I would have done just reading. Sometimes, I loved the fic, while the reader made me stumble. My basic approach so far has been to find a reader that I like and download everything I think I might enjoy that they've read. My hit rate is about 50%, which I think is pretty good. But that means I can't untangle the fic from the reader, not really, so I'm reccing them as sets, because what works for me isn't necessarily what will work for someone else.

All the podfic pages also include a link to the text if you prefer, but this post was already long enough and the idea of doing 2 lots of links made my brain hurt. Also, fics are Gen/PG unless otherwise stated, and links go to the audiobook version where available because I prefer them - if you prefer MP3, that's usually on the archive as well, just search for the title.

This is the first batch - I got a bit carried away, so I'm sorting them by fandom, although most of the ones I have are Merlin and Sherlock. So just for a change, let's start with Doctor Crossovers and SGA:

Lost in space (and time) written and read by FayJay. Here
A Doctor Who/Black Books crossover. Yes, you read that right, now go listen to the fic, which is awesome. I think particularly for this, having the writer read the story really lifts it - the Black Books voices are perfect.

Relatives and relativity by Yahtzee, read by FayJay. Here
A Doctor Who/Sense and Sensibility crossover that completely surprised me. I thought it was a light little fic, a comedy crossover, but I was completely wrong-footed by it, and loved loved loved the story in the end. The thing is, the author has really caught Jane Austen's style, which I'm not a fan of. So I never would have sat and read this all the way to the end, and even in podfic form, I found some parts hard-going, but the reading and the story pulled me through, and it was absolutely and completely worth it.

Someone on Whom by Cathryn, read by FayJay Here
Because I don't check before listening, I had no idea what this fic was about before it started. It turned out to be a brilliant, really brilliant, Doctor Who/Sherlock crossover, set during the Year that Never Was. Lovely character voices, and the ending left me grinning.

Even Bonnie and Clyde had off-days by Sholio, read by winkingstar Here
This remains one of my all-time favourite SGA fics, for good reason. Teyla, Ronon, adventures, boats, mud and banter. What more could I want? The reading here is spot on, particularly with the character voices, and I've been known to listen to it on repeat for an hour or so, quite happily.

I'm posting this quickly, before I can change my mind, faff with it some more and decide it sucks after all. Also, the last full-length Whoniverse fic I finished was last year's Big Bang, and I need to get back on the wagon. Or something. Also, this is noticeably not drabbles written from prompts *looks shifty* They're coming...

Unbeta'd, post-script to Last of the Time Lords, because if I wasn't a Genficcer, I think I'd probably be a Jack/Martha shipper.

Good...er...lunchtime all. Gosh, when did that happen? Hope everyone's coping with Monday okay. I'm tired out of my tiny mind, but managing better since the sun came out. I have lists as long as my arm to be getting on with, so clearly what I want to be doing is writing a long LJ post about my dull weekend.

~ I had a very practical weekend, what with one thing and another. On Saturday, I made us a medicine box from a shoebox and diet coke boxes. I can actually find a paracetamol when I need one, which is a great improvement. My SAD light makes an excellent craft lamp, it must be said.

~ Mum brought me up a collection of crochet hooks and some yarn, so I spent a happy evening trying not to tie my fingers together and mostly succeeded \o/ I'm pretty confident with the basic stitches now, as well as the basic amigurumi technique, which I like a lot. My main problem now is turning the end of my first row of proper stitches - all my squares are somewhat wobbly at the edges! Blackwell's knitters, would someone be able to help me with that on Wednesday, please? The books and YouTube vids aren't really doing the trick *looks hopeful*

~ A couple of emails at the weekend have made me look back on 2009 slightly differently than I'd expected. 2008 was a bad, bad year, and I know we'd all hoped this year would be better. It hasn't been, for most of my friends, and I will be glad to get into 2010, hoping for more. On the other hand, my own state of mind has, on the whole, been much better than last year, and I feel like I'm definitely *trying* to recover, even if I'm not there yet. I got up the courage a while back to email some friends that I'd more or less lost touch with, and their replies have been humbling and incredibly welcome. I'm still too flakey for my own liking, and need to get a grip on my organisational skills, which are more than lacking, but just the desire to do that is so much better than last year. Baby steps, but it's good to see progress.

~ Is anyone going to do Christmas wish lists this year? I checked, and they went up about this time last year. I'm very aware that the last posting dates are coming up in a few weeks, and I want to make sure I send stuff in plenty of time. If they don't pop up in the next few days, I might get the ball rolling myself...

~ I discovered a bunch of postcards from Menorca in the bottom of my rucksack. If I have your address, you might be getting a surprise!card in the next few weeks. Also, I must thank [livejournal.com profile] naye, [livejournal.com profile] rustydog and [livejournal.com profile] darththalia who have all sent me cards over the last few weeks, and have brightened my day immeasurably.

~ I did watch Waters of Mars yesterday and don't have many thoughts about it (doesn't include spoilers for the Christmas Special) )

With thanks to [livejournal.com profile] taffimai for pointing me in its direction:

For all Torchwood and Doctor Who folks suffering from Fannish Ennui?

Spaceman by [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls could be just what you need.

It's the kind of vid that reminds me why I'm a fan of these things in the first place. Sometimes I need something to just stop me and make me go "OH!" and this is it right now. Just wonderful
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Writing - Kitty under book)
And you thought I'd forgotten about these. :P A Whoniverse set this time, with thanks to the prompters. I think I'm going to attempt the SGA and Criminal Minds ones next, but first I have to go descale the kettle.

Yup. My life really is that exciting...

Since I failed at ficlet writing for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon, I decided to record something instead. Cross-posted there and to [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon.

And yes, I do sing the sung bits, but you might enjoy it anyway ;)

...I have seen the Doctor Who casting news, despite my current internet patchiness (writing lists then shopping for them takes a loooong time ;)) Since some of you may be/wish to remain unspoiled, I've chosen a neutral icon and will keep all reactions under a cut. I only have a few so far anyway.

More when I've had a chance to think, probably )
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Jack - with Martha)
Er. This was a [livejournal.com profile] bringthehappy prompt, chosen for me by [livejournal.com profile] rustydog Suffice it to say, I think something went a bit wrong...

The prompt was Doctor Who; Martha; music. The story comes with a two-tissue warning. I don't think it's suitable for posting to the Happyfest somehow.

I haven't read my flist yet, mostly because I get the feeling I'd have to do skip=90million, and I need to sleep at some point tonight

So just a few thoughts from me before I wade through everyone else's )
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Gives in - Rose crying)
I am starting to think that there is only a finite amount of squee in the universe. [livejournal.com profile] fandom_me and [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice both have theirs back, as do various other members of my flist. Mine has vanished. Not that I didn't enjoy Doctor Who, I just...can't find the squee.

I know why, I know there's nothing I can do about it, and I know that having hayfever like flu isn't helping, but damnit I want the happy. I don't want to cry at my desk or a WWII documentary or a trailer for the Olympics.

*stamps foot*

Enough crying. More happy please.
Also, two things that I expected to see more of in Who 4xnearlythelastone reaction posts and an unreasonable demand for fic )

Huh. There's some of my squee. Anyone care to provide me with more?

ETA: Of course, when all else fails, there's always icanhascheezburger to make me smile

ETA2: *blinks* [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_three links to this journal. I don't mind, I just didn't know. Huh. If I'd known I would have tidied up around here first. *hides washing up*

ETA4: (3 is under the cut, and yes, it's one of those days...) The Times headline: So if it isn't bug eat bug, what is it that's killing the honey bees
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Eek! - Donna No!)
I should start this by saying that if I'm slightly incoherent, it's because podcasts are bad for my body clock. Since the age of about 12, I've been setting my body clock by Radio 4, and can tell the time just by what programme's on. So listening to 'The News Quiz' (seriously hilarious - download it just for the bit near the end about the sharks) after Doctor Who completely threw me. According to my internal clock, it's now just gone 7 on a Friday night. These things really mess with my head.

Anyway

Moving swiftly on )

Includes spoilers for next week's trailer, but I've put in a spoiler space above and below.

I promised to build a pillow-fort to protect people from the fallout from this episode, so here it is. You may bring in:

- The cuddly toy of your choice.
- The Doctor of your choice. (I've bagsied Five, but I'm willing to share)
- The companion of your choice. (Donna!)
- As many pillows as you can carry.

And a whole vat of retcon. )

In other news, Fic!. Jack meets Lawrence of Arabia. No, really.
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Random - Time Lord Stig)
There are sort-of spoilers for next week's teaser (no plot, just my reaction) at the bottom, so hopefully I've left enough space for those of you who don't want to know. Probably spoilers in comments, though.

Doctor Who 4xwhateverwe'reupto reaction. Duh for spoilers )
jadesfire: Bright yellow flower (Text - Powers for good or evil)
Quick Doctor Who reaction: Cut because everyone has been incredibly good about not spoiling me and I want to return the favour! Also for slight incoherence and not covering half what I wanted to say. )

In other news, I wrote nearly 10,000 words of my Big Bang story in 2 days over the weekend. I'm not quite burnt out, which is good, as I have another 10,000 to go, but I have to admit that my brain's a little fried. If anyone wants to give me random words to try and incorporate into the story, they're more than welcome – I find that kind of thing can help push me onwards. Particularly as I'm about to write a scene that made me choke up during the blocking.* If I was watching it, it'd be from behind a cushion. Sadly, that doesn't work so well for writing.

Is it wrong that I sometimes freak myself out when I'm writing? I worry about my subconscious sometimes.

Other jobs for today include wrestling with the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang artist/writer matching, re-recording and posting an audiofic, and trying to get my brain to fire on more than one cylinder. Wish me luck!

*I write by running a film in my head, repeatedly, until the dialogue is what I want and the camera angles are right (no, really).

ETA: Repeat 10x: I must not research disturbing subjects where other people can see me, as it leads to them asking if you're planning on killing someone, to which the only answer is 'Yes'. But only fictionally...
